With that said, are there any games that are in the same boat as Chrono Trigger? Like, never released in Europe originally but finally saw a European release thanks to Virtual Console? I'm interested in seeing if maybe they do use heavily modified or alternate roms.
Actually, there are a lot. They also released Japan-only games. When they first started, they usually had a special week called Hanabi-Festival, and the next 3 updates were only imported titles.
As far as I remember, so far they released:
Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa
Break In
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood
Cho Aniki
Columns III
Detana!! TwinBee
DoReMi Fantasy: Milon's DokiDoki Adventure
Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy II (it's the American FFII. It's actually FFIV, and the description mention this fact)
Final Fantasy III (same as above. It's the American III, so it's actually VI)
Final Soldier
Gley Lancer
Gradius II
Gradius III
Kirby's Dream Land 3
Lode Runner
Mario's Super Picross
Milon's Secret Castle
M.U.S.H.A.
Ninja Gaiden (this was released in Europe, but with a different name. The rom on the VC is the American one and runs at 60hz)
Ninja JaJaMaru-kun
Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber
Pulseman
Puyo Puyo 2
Sin and Punishment (some text was translated)
Spelunker
Super Bonk (like Ninja Gaiden, this is the American rom. It had a different name in Europe)
Star Parodier
Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II
There are probably more, like a version of Street Fighter II, but I can't remember which one right now. Lately import titles were also released outside of Hanabi-Festivals, although they still make them some times.
