I didn't see anything regarding this, so if I was wrong, please proceed to trash this.
Sonic Blitz is a fan game made by Damizean/Mark of the Sonic hacking community.
Basically, Sonic is in a TRUE 3D environment with momentum based physics.
You can download this engine and also download other levels/character models and use them.
Also you can
make your own levels and play them in the game too!

Very old.
And it's called BlitzSonic, not Sonic Blitz.

I swear, I'd put a word filter on "old" if it didn't have such valid use.

It is sorta old, though.
I myself do some stuff for this thing. Such as this WIP: *shameless plug*

(You don't really have to watch the whole thing, mostly the first minute or so =P)

And yet, it never fails to surprise me when this thing pops up again. Shame I've been kept out of the loop as to what developments have occurred since I made that video... well, aside from a release containing a Green Hill-esque stage. And Bianco Hills, Delfino Plaza and the opening stage for <I>Super Mario Galaxy</I>. The latter three of which I'm pretty positive I can't post.

I'm tempted to port all of the sadx levels to this engine... but honestly in terms of a sonic game , this engine needs alot of work.

I think Damizean has an account here, but from what he said, he basically stopped working on this because he couldn't find any people to make models or maps for it.
Of course, in lieu of the
modification community that has cropped up out of it, I think he should consider picking it back up again.

I keep seeing everywhere that it's "open source", but all I've found so far is binaries. Does someone know if it really is open source, and if so, where the source is maintained?

They're lying, AFAIK, or have no idea what "open source" means. The source code is very much closed.

Yeah, I have a feeling that they have the terms "Modification friendly" and "Open Source" muddled up.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I thought that might be the case, but sometimes things were so clear in the beginning that they are never mentioned again because "everybody" knows them.

It is open source. I have the source to multiple versions. You just don't search hard enough.

Ah, I only thought that there was just one release, which was posted on here a while back. Meh, I never really searched that hard for another version anyway since I have only played it for a few minutes.
Besides, if you know where to download it from, surely it's not so hard to show the rest of us where they are, right?

Actually, Damizean released this on Senntient.

If I'm not supposed to have this out, just say so It'll be gone in a second.
Basically what it is is BlitzSonic with the Green Hill stage and source code.

Hm. That still has the old run animation (
compared to the new one)
