I dunno. I like the rings standing out a bit.
The complaints wasn't because of the coherent style.
The hell is wrong with you.
And these rings don't stand out "a bit". They don't belong anywhere in that image.

Really? I thought that was being discussed in IRC, as a result of how the project was being worked on. Perhaps that was just one other guy though.
EDIT: I also want to add that every day I lose optimism for the future levels, which have yet to be touched, really (in that I worry that the way the project is structured that the entire project, level-to-level, will have a coherent style).

1 is definately prettier, but compared to Sonic and Tails, which are extremely low on contrast, and this ring has high contrast between highlight and shadow, I voted on 3.
Also, these rings need to be more vectorized. All art there seems to be pretty vectorized, even though their shading' smoothness might trick your eyes, and those rings' shading are very brushed.

We get it Chimpo. We heard you the first, second, third, and fourth time (and frankly, I agree). Your criticism isn't any more helpful the fourth time you say it.
You would have to show me a hand drawn version before I was convinced that none of these are better. In my opinion the original clashed with its own background - it was just too pixellated for anyone to notice or care when moving at 100 pixels/second.

100 pixels per second? Pfffft. In the plane scene in Angel Island 2 (Sonic 3), Sonic moves at a maximum of 240 pixels per second (assuming you play in NTSC) when he gets locked out to avoid going past the plane. When in any of the games the camera gets uncentered because Sonic moves too fast, the speed at which goes is over 960 pixels per second. 100 pixels per second is slow in the old games >=P

Number 3 seems perfect and gets my vote.
It doesn't really matter too much at the moment. I would much rather see a playable release within the next 12 months than argue over the tiniest of details for the next twelve months.

I'd like to see a one-zone playable release in one month.

I would like to see a release that looks good.

It's a tough call for me between 2 and 3; I like 3 overall a little more, but it could be a little shinier -- even the spring coils are shinier (which doesn't make much since to me.) But 2 is too shiny and metallic looking. So probably 3.
5 is also cool, but its design looks more like that of the big ring in S3&K than that of the common ring in S2.
I might've actually suggested 1 were it not so dark.

1 is way to dark.
2 is too shiny.
3 just needs a little bit more shine.
4 too wide. Even if the original sprite was that wide, it just doesn't seem to look right.
5 too wide and shiny.
I voted for 3
