Surprised nobody's mentioned this yet-
"Siliconera" said:
Sega has released Sonic compilations and Sega Genesis collections on the PlayStation 2 and Gamecube. Those are so last gen. According to
multiple retail listings Sega has
another bundle of classics in development for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The title of the rumored Sega Genesis anthology is Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, which obviously means it will have some Sonic games from the Sega Genesis era in it. As for specific titles, who knows. We'll have to wait until Sega formally announces it, which could be soon if it really is scheduled to come out in February 2009.

Of course, it's just a rumour at the moment, but I expect there's probably some truth behind this one. Don't know what they'll add to make people consider buying the same handful of games
again for more money. The fact that it's a Genesis collection makes me doubt how worthwhile it's going to be (if it included SegaSonic the Arcade, Chaotix or some of the other post-16 bit games, I expect more of us would get it). If they call it "Sonic Genesis Collection", I expect a budget re-release of Mega Collection for current gen consoles. If they call it "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection", I expect a very large compilation of Mega Drive games, including Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles, Spinball, 3D and Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.

CD and Chaotix were technically Genesis games too, so I will be throughly disappointed of those aren't on there.
Not that I have a PS3/360. And not that I don't have a CD and 32X.

Yeah... you know, there's nothing "ultimate" about the Genesis repitoire of games anyway. In any case, whatever they can put on there will hardly be worth the money it'll cost, nor will it be a decent use of the disc medium it uses. It might be worth a damn if they stuck every single piece of promotional Sonic footage in there somewhere, but otherwise, I can't really see this being anything new or redeeming.

They could try putting Sonic CD on it except without the shitfest of bugs on gems collection... (hint: not even noticing that TTZ lacks underwater palettes is a sign of extremely lazy work)

It's not lazy work as much as it's a direct port—iirc, the PC version of Sonic CD didn't have an underwater palette there, either. That hardly qualifies as a "shitfest of bugs," though.

You know why don't they add extra zones or characters or something like that. That'd really make it worthwhile. Let you play as Sonic and Tails in Chaotix. Add a proper one on one Metal Sonic boss fight to CD and Chaotix.

Nah, the pc version does have a water palette (at least the Direct X version anyway). But yeah, this would only be cool if they either added neato extras (Commentaries, Dust Hill, Hidden Palace Zone, Enhanced Graphics?), or every single damn Sonic game pre-Dreamcast era... but somehow I doubt that :P

Watch as they re-draw each sprite and game for these HD consoles, and make the Sonic 2 HD project redundant :P

Something doesn't add up... Why would they make
another compilation when we already have most games on previous compilations
and PSN/XBLA?
...Do I smell Sonic Jam-style gameplay...?

now if this was maybe Sonic Jam with the added games (especially now that they seem to have the source codes available), then it may be worth a perchase

Sonic Mega Collection Plus already runs flawless on the 360's emulation, so what's the point in re-releasing? I want something more than just a Genesis collection to make it worthwhile. I can already play them games RIGHT now on my MegaDrive and my Xbox 360.

A re-release would be silly. They need to at LEAST put in the Sonic Gems games. but other Sonic games should be included that werent in the other compilations. Lots of people have been wondering about SegaSonic and chaotix. Those deserve to be on the compilation, for completeness sake.

Hey, who knows, maybe they'll pull out something to make another compilation worthwhile. Personally I'd be sold if they threw Choatix and some enticing extras on there.

Sad fact:
I can play Sonic 1-3 & Knuckles on my Mega Drive, Saturn, PS2, Gamecube, Wii, PS3, PC, PSP, DS, and GP2X, and I still think I'll buy this just to have them look less murky on my HDTV.

To everyone who thinks this will in any way be worth buying:
Watch it turn out to be Sonic 1/Sonic 2/Sonic 3/Sonic & Knuckles (no lock-on) running in widescreen, but with ten times the glitches and screwed-up physics- think a console Sonic Genesis.
