Sonic 1 JAP is different than the normal Sonic 1 when it comes to the techincal standpoint, so it is not the "same thing" The data is located at different locations so when you patch a IPS ment fora normal Sonic 1 ROM it overwrites the wrong data.

First: HELLO NEWBE!!!!!

2nd: downlad the regular Sonic 1 rom from Gerbel's site. Then, get a ips patcher. Try Stealth Patcher. Find it here! Next, copy the clean rom, just in case you mess up. Then, Patch the rom using the patcher, and save the new rom as a .bin file such as: sonic.bin
Afterward, try the rom, and it SHOULD work.
Don't forget: Use the American version, Not the Japanese version.

I tried the Sonic 1 BETA IPS patch, too. When I did it, I got a wonderful rom, 14MBs, and not working....
I gave up and started playing SA:DX PC....good times :P

That is a bug in the patcher, use a different one.

I hate patches, people can't just make a finished rom so people wouldn't have this problem.

They do it so they can save room and make it easier for people downloading it.

Well look at it this way:
1: ROMs are illegal, patches are not
2: Some people have hack archives and it saves them much room and bandwidth by using patches.
3: Patching is easy, as long as the person pating has a brain. *shot*

HEY! I'm not stupid! Every patch I ever downloaded has never EVER worked even when someone else I knew tried it. Either its a runtime error or it can't patch because the file won't match the original exactly. Most the time the program says it has a memory error. that's why I hate patches, because most of the time, they don't work. 3 people say its because im on Windows 2000, that shouldn't matter though.
