I've made this theory and it can explain well many things from CD Sonic 510 Beta, so let's start.
If you see the Original Anime Intro Video for Sonic CD from Sonic Jam you will see this:

Posted ImagePosted Image

This is R2, since it is between the Palmtree Panic (R1) and Collision Chaos (R3). They're ruins. We can see that the level order of Sonic 1 is very similar to the Sonic CD one.

Sonic 1 | Sonic CD

Green Hill | Palmtree Panic
Marble | R2
Spring Yard | Collision Chaos
Labyrinth | Tidal Tempest

As PPz was based on GHz, CCz was based on SYz and TT was based on Lz, we see that R2 perfectly matches Marble Zone, reforcing, so, the theory that R2 was based on Mz. This is the truth as many other sonic researches have confirmed. My theory is about what happened to R2 graphics.

I don't know the reasons for why was R2 scrapped, but the consequences can be found using some logical reasoning. For me, the graphics were merged with the Tidal Tempest ones and this can be proved since there are lots of Marble Zone concepts in Tidal Tempest that we will se bellow:

Remixed Art:

Reused Concepts:
Sonic 1 Original Object
Tidal Tempst Zone (Beta) Object From Sonic 1

If you play CD Sonic 510 Beta's Tidal Tempest you will see many Pallet problems, and I have an explanation for that. If R2 was merged with TTz, the Tidal Tempest zone pallet could have been tweaked to fit better with the new (and probably unedited) graphics. Let's see the pallets

TTz Present

TTz Past

TTz Good Future

TTz Bad Future

And that's it.

I don't think that looks like a ruin, it looks more like a abandoned lab for me.

Personally I always thought that "ruin" was actually meant to represent Tidal Tempest in the ending, with the collapsing floors and all. Plus the stages aren't exactly shown in the right order in the ending anyway (Metallic Madness is shown before Stardust Speedway).

They can be the ruins of a lab, there's nothing against that fact.

The level shown before stardust speedway is Wacky Workbench (look the badnik that sonic destroys, sonic uses the WWz platform to do it). Metallic Madness is not shown.

Metallic Madness is shown, it's the part where Sonic dodges the lightnings of the 3 lightbulb badniks in the darkened room which in the game can be found in MM3. And the badniks destroys with the Wacky Workbench platform are from MM as well.

Anyway, that theory doesn't sound right to me. If you look at the images of the unedited ending, the scenery looks more like an abandoned factory or as mentioned above, laboratory to me. Furthermore, judging by all the roots, vines, and sand lying around I'd assume it to be in some sort of jungle or cave. That badnik can't be found anywhere in Tidal Tempest, and sand in a water Round? No way.

Some people (myself included) think it to be that one enemy that jumps out of waterfalls in Palmtree Panic. (You know what I'm talking about right?)

I didn't say that Tidal Tempest is R2. I only Said that the concepts of R2 (that was based on Marble Zone) were used in Tidal Tempest after it was canned.

Yes, I didn't remember that. But It will not affect the theory because that level does not appear in the game and the unique level that was deleted was R2...

See the new video on the 1st post!

And I would like to comment:

That Mz is abandoned like the lab. We don't see many destroyed things in Mz only a few pillars, both are not ruins but abandoned places...

Actually I have never seen that bot in Palmtree Panic, but I don't think it's impossible that said bot was intended for Tidal Tempest like the other lobsterbot.

Curiously, that badnick is the boss of Under Ground Zone from Sonic 2 8-Bit (and this zone uses Marble Zone blocks!) this boss is called Doodlebug Mecha and you can see it in action below:

Yeah and that one was done in 1992, one year before the release of Sonic CD. And Green Hills Zone Music (The 8-Bit Version of Emerald Hill) was used in Sonic CD as Toot Toot Sonic Warrior (not the inverse since the Green Hills Music is older). Sonic 2 8-Bit and Sonic CD have many similarities...

heh, I am reminded of these:

http://exteel.no-ip....051/Sonic%20CD/

The Gabriel Morales mentioned just-so-happened to be in #protos when I showed these pages too XD

02:00:04 <+TheSonicRetard> man, I loved Area 51
02:00:21 <+TheSonicRetard> haha, that was me! and I swear I remember seeing the directories
02:00:26 <+TheSonicRetard> and yeah, my disc did break

It shows the theory about the background of each level showing something of the next level, with some random Dust Hill theories thrown around.

Edit: I'll convert these to HTML some day :P

I remember there was a magazine scan somewhere talking about the Sonic 2 CD "version" to include remixed levels from Sonic 1 as an extra feature not present in the genesis version. Although (I think) it wasn't confirmed this scan to be actually legit, I have the theory that if this was the plan at some point, they ended up using the remixed levels exclusively for what would be SCD.

To the point, it's only a theory, but it'd make perfect sense for R2 to be the "remixed" marble zone if it really went that way, since that's the only missing one in SCD as remixes from S1.

Yes, I've posted it here because with a good theory we can ... maybe... find things? Or at least a theory can represent an end to some legends, like OMG ITZ DUST DESERT @_@... Most of the R2 theories I've seen are silly or don't make sense ... so ... There's not anything that I can say about it... but thanks for your comment!

It would be good if we had the email of Yuji Naka xD.
