    I DONE MAKED GAMES.
Now, before I start; This is not your ordinary "poll" thread, it has a purpose. Related to the Sonic 4/Sonic sequel thread, I thought it very important to basically look at what Sonic meant to us as we first discovered him.

Free from any of preconceptions or bias you have since acquired, here's the main things I want to know here:

1 - What was the first Sonic game you played?

2 - How did you find out about it?

3 - What was your initial reaction to it?

    Well, here's my take;

1 - What was the first Sonic game you played?

Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Megadrive.

2 - How did you find out about it?

Pure and simply, I saw this commercial, part of a series with this guy who loved in a lorry trailer full of games and played them all day (A boyish dream or what?) and his "friend", a young ninja kid. Ah, the 1990's.

3 - What was your initial reaction to it?

I think I was hooked before I played it. I saw the above commercial several times before begging my Dad to get the game (He rented it first, we acquired it later). So, the commercial did it's purpose and brainwashed a 10 or 11 year old (I forget exactly, but I think I had just turned 11). Due to the way the game footage was synched with the ninja's actions, I sort of noticed the peculiar behaviour in this title. The combo-bounce from the crabmeats looked fucking awesome, with a much more satisfying arc on the jumps than Super Mario had, and the falling down the curve and running BACKWARDS up it? What was this insane game? This was so totally different, out there, and surreal compared to everything else. I HAD TO HAVE IT.

When I finally got the game, I found it hard to get past Marble Zone, and when I did I basically got finished off by Spring Yard Zone's boss. The thing that captivated me most was that it was like a bizarre dreamworld I was running this character around in. Green Hill Zone was this chequered speedway which was next to, but somehow not attached to (Becuase the scrolling went opposite directions, vertically) a huge lake with cliff structures made of pixel blocks which couldn't possibly exist in real life, and Spring Yard Zone (At that point, my favourite - possibly due to the ad)... I couldn't work out what the fuck it was supposed to be with those bumpers and all, but I liked it immensely.

And let's not forget that character. A BLUE HEDGEHOG WHO RUNS FAST. Well, this was straight out of fuckedupsville. I was intelligent enough to know that hedgehogs are anything but fast, and a moron could tell you they're not blue. I didn't get (At the time) how he was a throwback to classic cartoon character design, but what I understood was this: It certainly wasn't borne of conventional thinking.

I dare say that Sonic the Hegdehog taught me to "think outside the box".

Now, why do I want you to make this post?

Because, our first impressions are often very honest and uninhibited, and over the years Sonic has meant so many different things to so many of us. I want you all to leap back and discover that first impression, because it's totally relevent -- you love the series for some reason right now, else you wouldn't be here. So, defining what the initial draw was is one of the most important steps in isolating what qualities a Sonic sequel should have.

I look forward to your responses, and might I add that tl;dr does not exist for that third question. Go crazy.

    Sonic 2

2 - How did you find out about it?

I played it for the first time at my neighbors house when I was 4 or 5

3 - What was your initial reaction to it?

Best thing ever. I never had so much fun up until that point. Sure I sucked but it began the long road of Sonic fandom that still goes on today. The speed and level design just blew me away.

1 - What was the first Sonic game you played?

Sonic the Hedgehog for Mega Drive too.

2 - How did you find out about it?

My father bought it for me along with the console, The Smurfs and SEGA Mega Games Vol. 3. I don't know why he decided to give me a Mega Drive though.

3 - What was your initial reaction to it?

No clue. I was like 3 or 4, I didn't have any clue about video games! Things that I remember however are that I often had trouble getting up slopes (lol), I rarely got past Marble Zone Act 2 and Dr. Robotnik on the cover (PAL) always looked like a walrus to me.

    1. Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Megadrive

    2. I went over my cousins sometime in the Spring of 1992 (was about 4 years old) and my cousins had bought a Sega Megadrive with Sonic 1. Up until that point, I knew nothing of video games and my time was occupied collecting toy cars and playing with them.

    3. My initial reaction was a bit strange compared to most. I came round when they were playing Marble Zone, and I saw a cool blue hedgehog whom I couldn't pronounce his name right (I had speech problems when I was little), so I called him Sitnaw. Sitnaw the spiky thing. And I was amazed at the combination of speed and gameplay I saw before me. I had problems jumping onto platforms, but instead of being frustrated, I wanted to try again. The next time I went over there, I saw Sonic 2, as 2 of my cousins were playing split screen on Casino Night. I was amazed at the fact that Sonic now had 2 games and this one had a pinball level that 2 people could play. I played for about 10 mins that day as they hardly let me play, and it was the best 10 minutes of playing Sonic I can remember. I loved playing as Tails, the new orange thing as I called it and trying to beat my cousins who had been playing all day. Of course, I didn't, but I learned that I could have just as much fun jumping into the slot machines and gathering rings. And the first time I got 3 Jackpot's I thought I had broke the game, with all the rings flying everywhere.

It wasn't until November of 1994 that I actually got a MegaDrive 2 with a 6 game cartridge featuring
Super Monaco GP, Streets of Rage, Revenge of Shinobi, Columns, Sega Soccer and Sonic 1. I played Sonic to death, eventually weearing out the pins in the controller slot and we then got a Playstation after that, about 1998. I will cherish those years of playing Sonic 2 all day, especially as I remember getting a constant game over at Hill Top. That damn earthquake got me every time in act 2. But I was always determined to get past it.

But yeah. I loved every second of playing my Megadrive until it's untimely dismissal. And even though I still love to play the classics, it's just not the same and I sometimes force my emulator to PAL EUR, just to relieve the real memories of my childhood.

1 - What was the first Sonic game you played?
Sonic The Hedgehog: Triple Trouble on the Sega Game Gear.
2 - How did you find out about it?
It was handed down to me from my older brother along with his blue Game Gear and a few other games.
3 - What was your initial reaction to it?
I was young, it had bright colors, mildly entertaining music, and good controls. In short, I loved it. =P I just got angry that my parents didn't always have enough batteries in stock for me to play it for long periods on road trips.

2 - How did you find out about it?
An homepage that talked about Megadrive roms to run on emulators, I became curious and then I tried a rom of Sonic 2.
I actually found out about Sonic pretty late - in 2002 - I was 9 at the time.

3 - What was your initial reaction to it?
Very good and that made me try the other games, too.
The Sonic series then fastly became my favourite video games series ever.
So much that most things that I draw on school desks when I get bored are Sonic characters. =P

I loved the soundtrack, and the graphics. It was fun as hell. Allough, I couldn't get past Panic Puppet 3 (Which I thought was the final boss >.>) I loved playing it. I hated stopping playing it.

    Various Artwork & Music, :smug:
1 - What was the first Sonic game you played?

Either Sonic the Hedgehog or Tails and the Music Maker... Yeah, I can't remember which one it was.

2 - How did you find out about it?

I have no idea. I was like 5 or 6 years old. I think the only games I had before it were Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario World for the SNES, which were pretty much my first 2 games ever. I do remember getting the Genesis with the Sega 6-Pak for Christmas when I was 6 or so, both of which I still own...

3 - What was your initial reaction to it?

I always thought Tails and the Music Maker was a pretty cool game, it was fun and interactive. Every page had a fun new different activity on it... One taught you how to make circles, one had you hopping on lilypads and what not, one had different seasons of Green Hill Zone in it, and one even had Sonic on it... I'm pretty sure that was the last page, where you didn't really do anything. I think somehow I knew Sonic was the main character of the series and Tails was just like "little bro", so maybe the first game I knew about was the original Sonic the Hedgehog.

As for Sonic the Hedgehog, I always liked the speed, and the colorful variety of stages. I remember always watching and waiting through the demos for Spring Yard Zone, which just had some unidentifiable level of coolness to it for some reason. It always seemed like the fastest, most colorful, creative stage that had that cool jazz music with the bells in the background - as well as that awesome Roller badnik that looked and behaved just like Sonic. Later on, I developed a liking for Starlight Zone and Scrap Brain Zone as well, mainly for the music and atmosphere of it all. To go a step further, Chemical Plant Zone in the second game gave me a very similar feeling to Spring Yard Zone, but possibly 2x the coolness.

It was awesome, it was a good game & I can remember that it was Chemical Plant Zone, although there was also Sonic & Knuckles, which I remembered a few levels & their music.

1 - What was the first Sonic game you played?
    Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

2 - How did you find out about it?
I had just been introduced to the concept of video games after moving in with my mother (I had lived with my grandmother for years beforehand. I was 6 when I moved in with my mother). She had a Famicom, but a friend's house that she always took me to had a Genesis. She played Sonic 2 all the time, and it utterly fascinated me. I asked if I could play. The rest is history.

3 - What was your initial reaction to it?
It was stunning. The levels were extremely upbeat and colorful, the music was fantastic, and it was pretty easy to pick up. As a child, I wasn't the best at video games—hell, I could never get past the first Goomba in Super Mario Bros—but Sonic as a game was extremely easy to learn how to play. Get hit, lose rings; lose rings, pick them up. Jump on stuff. Profit! I could never make it past Chemical Plant (:v:) but it was fun even just playing the first two zones over and over again. It essentially hooked me on gaming, and I haven't looked back since.

There was also a copy of Sonic 2 at my Dentists' office, which I believe is still there to this day. My ultimate victory was coming back to it when I was older and using Super Sonic in Emerald Hill. :D

I played the original game at a friend's house all the time following that. I think I enjoyed it more at the time because the environments were much more surreal—something that really appeals to you as a kid. I remember when he discovered debug mode by accident, and even the kid's father was completely stunned. You could turn into a ring and beat the level in like 3 seconds! Fuck yeah! I also remember we tried to beat the game with all the emeralds to see if it would unlock Tails. It didn't. :v:

I'll be honest and say that, even these days, I don't play many games anymore outside of Sonic. It's the only game that, throughout my life, has simply felt "right" to me. My initial reaction is a consistent reaction—these games are genius, through and through, and I don't think anything can change that, no matter how many times I play through an unedited Emerald Hill Zone in ROM hacks. It's worth it. That's how well that game is designed.

Parents bought it for me for Christmas. It's even on tape.
3 - What was your initial reaction to it?
Depends. Just seeing the box made me go nuts with excitement (also on video—no I'm not going to show you :p)
Playing the game, I had the insatiable need to beat the game, no matter how many times it ruthlessly defeated me.

If one is looking to see perhaps what made past Sonic good and current Sonic bad, this also reveals something interesting.
It didn't matter to me back then how the gameplay was, as long as the game took a while to beat, had large levels, decent programming, and nice music.

I also remember being dissapointed at Sonic 3D Blast, finding it frustrating and stupid because of the different type of gameplay and constant deathtraps everywhere. Indeed. If anyone wonders why I am so jaded, it is because I originally lost interest thanks to that version (the Genesis one).

Sonic Adventure was alien to me; all the characters looked like they'd been stretched out incorrectly, and I hated the name 'Eggman'. I never bought a Dreamcast and played it all the way when Sonic Adventure DX came out, finding it to be interesting, but truthfully I only liked it and SA2 because they were fairly decent games with a number of levels.

My disinterest flared up again after being dissappointed by Sonic Heroes.

1 - What was the first Sonic game you played?

Sonic & Knuckles. This was also the first time I played a video game.

2 - How did you find out about it?

I think it came bundled with the Genesis I got on either Christmas or my birthday, along with NHL '97. As I didn't really like sports

3 - What was your initial reaction to it?

I don't remember very well, but I know that I played Sonic & Knuckles a LOT. The farthest I ever got was Sandopolis Act 2, where I got stuck in the sand slides (and where I found yet another giant ring...). Speaking of them, I remember that with Knuckles (which I actually preferred over Sonic), I could get 7 Chaos Emeralds (I loved the special stages) and transform into Super Knuckles. I never managed to do so with Sonic, though for a reason I'm not sure of, I knew that Sonic turned gold (... maybe I did it once, but I can't remember), thus I called him "Sonic en or" (Golden Sonic). But being in a super form wasn't enough to make me a good player... I hated it when the character jumped when I wanted to do a spin dash... Also, I remember once, I got over 400 rings by the end of Mushroom Hill Act 1 (I suppose I went in the bonus stages many times – I always did the "casino" stage as I didn't understand how the other worked) and the game crashed as I reached the boss...

Later, I got a PlayStation and Crash 2 (which I also loved), and I stopped playing Sonic, so the Genesis and the games were sold. I kind of regretted it, but now I have Sonic Mega Collection Plus to compensate :P. I got this game a few years after I discovered about emulation, which allowed me to try Sonic 1. Sonic 3 and Sonic 3D, as well as the lock-on games.

My mother played it nonstop when I was inside her, so when I was born, I was able to get half way through that game before I could say Mama or Papa.

    No fucking joke.
3 - What was your initial reaction to it?
I was like 9 months old, what do you expect me to do? Write a detailed review on the way it is programmed? I just liked the pretty colours. =P

EDIT: I would also like to note that whenever I started to drown, I would throw the controller at the TV, and run out screaming. Thats because I was scared shitless of the drowning theme. That is one of the main reasons I didn't beat the game until I was about 4.

1 - What was the first Sonic game you played?

Either Sonic 1 or Sonic 2. Whichever it was, it's Sonic 2 I have the most memories of.

2 - How did you find out about it?

My brother was nearing his teens at the time I was born (1990), and naturally was into video games. He got a Mega Drive, and the Sonic games at some point. The Mega Drive was a near constant presence in those early years. Pretty early, I started playing too. Sonic 2 and Tiny Toon Adventures were my main ones to play.

3 - What was your initial reaction to it?

I loved the music, and how it looked, and was ok at the gameplay. I'd always hurriedly give the controller to my parents at a special stage. I always got stuck on the early stages, too. The bit in Chemical Plant where the water rises while you're going up the column was a particular bit that always got me. The drowning music definitely had an impact, too. Threw my concentration off. I always find it a pity that I can get past that bit now without the water touching me. Makes it have less of an impact.

Sonic 1 didn't appeal as much to me at that age, because it was so much slower, which I think is because of PAL issues rather than the game itself. All the same, I remember the zones well, even if I only reached the later ones myself through the special stage code.

3 - What was your initial reaction to it?

WOW!! I loved the music! Green Hill Zone's music sounded awesome! Id only heard very basic music from my Cousin's NES or my Gameboy up until that point. Then how brilliantly it played compared to Mario Brothers.... I loved it and kept nagging my parents to get me a Megadrive... luckily my sister got a taste of Sonic as well and she fell in love with it, so we ended up getting a MD plus Sonic 1 + Sonic 2 as a joint Christmas present!! RESULT!

My brother and cousin both got the Megadrive when it was released, so I used to play it with them when I was 4. When Sonic 2 came out, I used to kick their asses in 2 player, even though there's a big age difference between us haha. My mum loved playing Sonic 1 too.

3 - What was your initial reaction to it?
I was really addicted to Sonic 2 more than Sonic 1 for it's little evolution. Plus Tails <3
I thought it was the most awesome thing ever. I thought playing Fruit Machine on the Atari with my aunty was fun, but fuck, this blew it out the water.
