I think Tweaker has a great idea. We could take it a step further and have multiple continue icons play with each other so they could look like they're talking, slapping each other, pushing one down that causes the rest to fall over. We could have a bit of fun with that.

The fuck did I just watch? Anyways, kinda like that, I guess. I was thinking more along the lines of having a random event each time the continues pop-up so each little character icon would be doing the same stuff together instead of each of the icons doing random things.

I think having them interact is a great idea. Maybe something like...

1 continue. He is just tapping his foot, or maybe indifferent.

2 continues. He and another are trying to out-cute, or be better at sad puppy dog eyes, then the other so that "they get chosen" like little hedgehogs in a litter at a pet store.

3 continues. They are all arguing and forcefully pointing to themselves, as to why they should be the one to go. But of course they are all the same.

4 continues. They are climbing up on top of each other like a totem pole, fighting to be on top, then falling over and repeating.

...

Ok, maybe I got a little carried away, especially when considering it would have to be redone with every character... unless someone did it with flash, and the symbols were simply edited, but that might not look as clean or professional... I'm not normally for any of this messing with the original, but I think this idea is GREAT!

This is terrifying.

I don't know about the whole cuteness theme. Maybe having the normal falling animation on a black background with some sort of particles to indicate motion. When the player hits the option to continue, just have the Tornado sweep in from the side and catch Sonic's fall, then fly off the side of the screen. Another idea at the very least.
