I agree, the Chemical Plant rendition is pretty good, but the bass is a bit overpowering

Updated Chemical Plant. Changed the drums, scaled back the bass, plus a few other minor tweaks.

This is a great improvement. Everything is just perfect. You, sir, have made a winning tune! Keep at it!

Incidentally, what exactly do you mean by "watery"? I'm going to assume it still applies because I didn't change any of the instruments too much.

It's the phazer on the one synth that you have. I would go for something more in the saw/brass-style here rather than a synth voice.
Also, the main problem that I have with the bass is that it's so low its hard to hear any specific notes. Take it up an octave.

Is it a phaser or a chorus effect?
Also, I think the song could use more attitude. Sax is not a bad choice for the lead, but I think that if you're going to go with a sax you should do it for all its worth and make it sound snobbier, punchier, dirtier, and nastier. This would probably take some serious MIDI editing of the main line to exaggerate things a bit. But that's just what I'm hearing at the moment.
EDIT: I just want to mention that even though sax might be a good lead in CNZ or HTZ, those require a more laid-back style. I think here is an opportunity to be somewhat "industrial" with the line (for lack of a better word).

Double post because
and it's "finished".
Here's an OGG file: http://www.box.net/shared/8zudurw8w4
If you think you can get it better sounding, here's a MIDI of what I did*: http://www.box.net/shared/fl1aoox8gw
*Protip: Pretty much everything I do is a rendered MIDI, and the patch set I have is small. I won't get offended if you try to punch it up further.

Oh god these tracks really make the Genesis sound quality look bad. At least some of them anyway.
Oh please god Casino Night 2P. I hope that one turns out good. I might contribute later on but I'm not that good with music.

I'm interested in seeing how that one's handled too. In my opinion, it's like a fusion of Hip Hop and Jazz, or is best suited to those genres.

I could offer my help for the music if I wasn't that lazy. But keep in mind I *only* work with FM synthesis (being 4 or 6-op) and vintage drum machine sounds.
Consequently, the tunes I'll make may sound a little disappointing to most of you (while being very close to their original equivalent, as I'll use the original sounds as bases and layered with new sounds).

Hey, give it a shot. Your music sounds very Retro; I think that could help tons depending on which song you try and cover. For example, I think you could make a great cover of Sweet Sweet Sweet, from the ending sequence, or even the credits music, which I'd expect to represent the original music a lot more as a sort of tribute to the original game.

I've just noticed that some of these versions are lacking some stuff, instruments not entering at the right time and other inaccuracies... I think it would be better to take some of the Sonic 2 Dash MIDIs as a base, since many of them seem to be very accurate, or perhaps make some MIDIs from original VGMs and work from those.
I feel that making "too different" versions will appeal to some, but bother other people who liked the originals.

I was listening to the Aquatic Ruins song posted here, and it's really good. I don't know if it's just me, but it seems like some of those pan flutes should fade out instead of simply dropping their note after their duration. Specifically, after the first bar of the chorus (is that the term?) of D E FDA, (for instance at the 00:02 mark of the song). They just kind of end. Then again, I'm a newbie so I probably shouldn't use my first post to complain, sorry!
