It looks more like it's spluttering - nearly going 'kaput' to me - rather than it being able to fly; perhaps cut out the 'engines off' frame, that might help.

Done, But now the flame looks like it is bouncing back and forth.

I already have an animated version. It still uses the gradients, but I'll upload it anyway.

Look, for consistency sake you are going to have to just abandon the CG. Ink n' paint and all the other cel shaded rendering plugins out there look nice and all, but it's never going to produce the results we are looking for... staying consistent with the sprites in terms of lighting and staying consistent with our other goods in terms of style.
Go get yourself Illustrator and start working on your vector art.
And yes, I know a lot of the old stuff was made in CG, but the fact is, Sonic wasn't supposed to look flat shaded in the Megadrive sprites. It's an artistic route that this project has taken, and it would behoove everyone if the artists would keep in style.

Here is my first attempt at a Badnik. This is still any early draft but I wanted to post it before I went to bed. It still needs
a lot of work. I was having trouble figuring out what the bottom lip is supposed to look like. In the concept art it's just a red pincher thing, but from the sprite it looks like it's gold and black striped.

JPEG is a very poor choice to display that in. Could you render it as PNG so it's a bit easier to make out detail?

The white highlight should be below the edge of the shell. Likewise, the head itself needs more shading all around. I think you picked out the wrong color for the trimming around the light bulb.

About the "sets" we will not support a CG version of Sonic 2 HD.
Thus 3D DiscoKing's marvellous result, and the need of properly testing 3D on BG, items and Boss Veichles S2HD will use 2D art drawings for all the rest. Including Characters and Badniks
Once this project will be "closed" we will consider the "packs" option, not before.
I don't agree, but I seem to be the only one so whatever. =|

No, you're not the only one, but I guess we may as well have a consistent set of art when we claim that this thing is "finished".

Would you say you're dissatisfied with the current vector art progress? I personally think Drex's Buzzbomber looks fantastic, although I thought we'd also agreed that there were some perspective issues with the stripes? It seems to me those were never officially resolved.

Yeah. It's sad we have to lose Disco's CG, but Drex's latest version of the Buzzer is great. We're losing something good while keeping something just as good.

No no, I really like both equally (Drex's being a bit more expressive and DiscoKing's being more robot-like) but they just have a different feel to them, and both kinds seem to have been used by SEGA at one point. That's why, from a user's perspective, I'd love to be able to choose which style of badniks/backgrounds I want to see while playing.
Also, I have to say that the CG model reminds me of the Japanese Sonic 2 commercials and that cool Sonic Ride thingy SEGA made back them. =|

About the perspective - maybe I should go ahead and change them so that they look right. I have been trying to go for sprite accuracy and I think my second to last attempt had it the closest, but I think now I am going to try and mimic DiscoKings' tail-end so it can look correct.
Also, Nobody touch Nebula (form Sky Chase). That one is piss easy and I am taking it. =P

All the sprites in the old Sonic games are stylistically consistent with the character and level art. that's what's at issue here. If you use the CG badnik sprites, they won't look consistent with the existing art and will break the look.
So to say the least, it's good and all that it gives you that nostalgia feel, but there really is no point in using them when you don't have the same style throughout. All that will give you is a cheapish amateur look.
