This is what happens when an industry "regulates" itself. It's gross.

Anyway yeah I could see Sonic games falling victim to this, even though in reality they aren't remotely what this change in PEGI's criteria should be targeting. We already lost the Game Corner in Pokémon games starting with Platinum in Europe for precisely this reason and it's absurd.

Yeah, but the difference between the Game Corners and Casino Night's slots is that Casino Night is fun. The Game Corners were fucking tedious, which is why everyone just bought the coins instead of playing.

Which is the real reason I hate the change to Voltorb flip. The game itself is better than the slot machines, but they took out the ability to just buy coins, so the end result was making it even more tedious than before.

They could very well just use this community's disassemblies if that's the route they take. I mean, it was their code to begin with. :P
    Unless it's Chaotix. :P
We may see it that way, but bureaucrats can be strange and stuck-up. I'm still pissed that the Canadian Red Cross affiliate whined about video games having generic red crosses on medkits, and they cited some old UN law. That law was supposed to prevent hospitals and medical supply manufacturers not associated with the Red Cross organization (and thus might have a mission inconsistent with theirs) to misappropriate their iconography. They can fuck right off in trying to regulate fictional art.

And I thought this push to classify gambling in games was just supposed to address actual gambling, like the microtransactions and lootboxes you mentioned. But it seems they got carried away. And I'm against real-life gambling, personally, but I see no reason to have fictional in-universe gambling be scrutinized. I'm against real violence too, and yet I don't see the problem with (and even enjoy) fiction that has violence. What, is everyone supposed to keep their head down to the ground and just never consume media? Just go to work and never engage in entertainment?

Legitimately forgot about Chaotix, that's true.

And yeah, they could use our disassemblies, I just don't think they would. I'm fine with being wrong on that, though.

It's not that they "got carried away", this doesn't address that problem at all - games with lootboxes attached to literal gambling games are still rated 3+ because the thing you win doesn't have a number attached to it.

It's kinda sad. Of course micro-transactions and LootBoxes are a plague, feasting on people addictions and such...

...but just the thought that a casino themed level can get a game banned or rated 18+ makes me mad.
Games used to be all about imagination and creating unique experiences, that You can't see in real life. Just recently I was playing Luigi's Mansion 3 and I thought, that it's a fantastic experience, because it feels like a video game - it's not trying to be realistic, it does its own unique thing.

Now imagine if someone puts up new regulations - you can't use a vaccum to catch ghosts, people can copycat that and destroy rooms in the house. Or worse, You can't show ghosts in games, it's disrespectful to the dead.
Yeah, I know I'm exaggerating, but then - who in 90's thought that silly slot machines in games will become a problem 30 years in the future? :V

I don't know if it's me getting older, or the times are getting more weird.

Honestly, I think this is going to be a huge hubbub over nothing. At worst, we get "Festival Night Zone" and they merely take out the slot machine mechanics in S2 and S3 and the PC version just mods it back in within 2 days of release using modified code from the decomp versions.

I also think this is absurdly unlikely.

Even if they give it a higher rating it’s not gonna matter. Everyone already knows what Sonic is like. It’s not gonna hurt sales or his image.

Nobody is gonna suddenly think they made the series more mature. Especially not a collection of the original games.

At most it’ll just say something like...18+ for references to gambling.

Sure Sonic 2 isn't the issue, but no future game will have a casino theme to it if this is how it's going to be.

Sure, but limitation breeds creativity, right? We don’t want them rehashing level themes anyway, being one of the things we most often complain about as a community.

Doesn’t stop them from making casino-adjacent themed levels. Plenty of locales can have the bright lights and glitzy glamour seen in an aesthetic like Casino Night.

Don’t get me wrong, the whole idea that Sonic’s depictions of casinos and such could be regulated and censored because of heavy handed and inconsistent politics is infuriatingly absurd, but I don’t think I’d be hugely torn up if collateral in this is that we don’t see slot machines in new games.

I would not be upset if they stopped making Casino themed stages either. Not every game has one.

I understand it’s the principle of the thing. That a new rule should not impact something this inoffensive. I’m just personally not really bothered by it.

  13. Will it stop SEGA making pimball-esque stages tho'? Something like Mirage Saloon... I think I would be happy with that.

  14. I think a good argument could be made that Casino Night barely even has gambling and more just has environmental hazards if anything.

I think Casino Night won't be affected because I don't think PEGI will care about Sonic 2.

That said, if they do force a change on Sonic 2, then its obviously absurd and should be opposed by all. We need regulation for actual lootbox gambling, not casino themed levels and game mechanics.

So with the recent launch of Colors Ultimate, I’m sure most of us here have been following the messy launch and the reports of crazy glitches with that game. (BTW I’ve been playing it and haven’t experienced any serious glitches so I still consider the game to be fun and enjoyable)

Now I am not someone who goes out of their way to try and find glitches, but this does concern me with what’s to come with Origins. If SEGA did indeed try to rush Colors Ultimate out the door, then who’s to say they won’t do the same thing with this compilation.

I hope the developers are given the time they need, but if it’s not Taxman and Stealth or at the very least M2 working on this, then it would be considered hypocritical on SEGA if they say “we care about quality so we want to take our time” but yet we get a messy launch with Colors Ultimate

While I understand the sentiment, I think we need to wait and see. We still have no idea who's developing and just what the extent of the project's ambition is. And of course, the very fact that such a stink is surrounding Colours should hopefully cause this game to have more attention payed to preventing what issues happened with the development of Colours Ultimate.

When has a Sonic game not been rushed? We talk about '06 needing an extra 6 month of dev time, but None of the original trilogy got the dev time they deserved. Nor did either of the adventures. The more we hear behind the scenes, it seems every Sonic game has been rushed and had important content cut for time.

At this point I don't think many parents care about ratings considering how many kids play games like Fortnite and even Mortal Kombat, but there might be some who take the rating thing seriously. I couldn't play Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 until I was 13, and I was 12 at the time. I played the first three games, but my parents were not aware of the ratings until I wanted to rent THPS4. After that though, they stopped caring.

Without a doubt, some parents just don't know or care. Even the ones that do don't always think of everything. For example, my parents would NEVER have bought me the Genesis ports of any Mortal Kombat game...but they never thought to set up parental controls on Sega Channel, so I played them a bit that way.
