It's not saying "Crazy Toy Box" though. The sample was found and a video that shows most of Sonic CD's samples includes it:

Go to 9:04 to hear the sample.
It's funny because other people hear it as "You suggested lettuce" while the sample before it sounds like "Grab the onions". :V

Sonic Adventure's Casinopolis in a Batman comic. Does anyone know what issue this is?

As in, Sonic 1 on Mega-CD? It's good to have this confirmed. There used to be a mock-up disc on Sonic Team's website: https://web.archive.org/web/19970217175440if_/http://www.sega.co.jp/nights/sonic/sonium/debut.html

It's from Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #4, which came out today.

As for the obvious elephant in the room: I think it's far more likely that this is a fun Easter egg and not malicious plagiarism. It wouldn't be as blatant if it were plagiarism, and it doesn't appear to have been traced (the casino isn't seen from that angle, it's far more detailed in that comic, and a tracer probably wouldn't have kept the monitor). Also, Batman goes there to find the Riddler, who was played by Jim Carrey in Batman Forever.

Also the lore implications are of course intoxicating. Does this mean that Station Square and Gotham are one and the same? If so, does that mean Sonic is part of the Batman universe, or is Batman part of the Sonic universe? Is the human world actually the DC Universe? If so, is Sonic canon to the DCU timeline? If one of the Endless appeared to a Sonic character, would they take on the form of a Sonic OC? There are many questions arising from this and I'm intruiged.

This website is interesting. I found a downloadable archive with Sonic and Tails gifs.

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

It doesn't look like the colors match the Mega Drive versions exactly, and notably the Sonic sprite has erroneous yellow pixels between his legs in a few frames, a mistake I'd typically associate with sprite comics and amateur fangames, not in something coming from the devs. I wonder if this can tell us something about the source images used in development?

I also found this desktop icon, which I find interesting for its use of anti-aliasing.

I'm sure there's more goodies around there.

    ALWAYS Sonic the Fighters
I've recently been made aware of something. The little Sonic drawing on the Japanese bezel insert for Sonic the Fighters is missing from the Sonic Championship bezel artwork...

I've actually passed on getting this bezel a few times in Japanese because there was always some sort of defect with it or other items in the auction. I'll try to snag it the next time I see it because apparently while Gems Collection in English uses the bezel as the "Manaual", the Japanese version of Gems Collection lists the collectable move cards as the "Manual"...

    ALWAYS Sonic the Fighters
I know I haven't scanned all the stuff I previously imported from Japan (thank you @SystemsReady for the aid!) but I just bought another item that should be quite interesting. Weekly Famitsu No.390 June 7, 1996 which covers Sonic the Fighters and Virtua Cop 2! I can't imagine how scarce specific volumes of Fumitsu must be becomming, so I jumped on this one. It's really cheap so I've got the costs covered this time!

I noticed that Nishimura's tweet claims the vocoder voice is on "the current side of the song", which could mean the Present version? I gave it a listen and couldn't even hear any vocoded samples, let alone one that sounded like it said "Crazy Toy Box", so if it's there it's definitely being played at a low volume.

So Sonic’s getting NFTs in Japan.

It’s not lost on me that a character whose defining games explored themes of nature vs technology and excessive industrialism at the expense of the environment is now being merchandised through...excessive industrialism at the expense of the environment.

    Good job, SEGA.

Wonder if it’s possible to document just how much energy goes into authenticating each one (other than the obligatory “too much”)...

Honestly I feel kinda bad for the western community teams. I don’t think it’s wrong for people to use their voice and raise awareness via those channels in the hopes that this partnership is back-pedalled, but I don’t think everybody protesting in those channels are going to be so considerate to the humans on the other side of the web.

Nah, let's not forget from the music topic that the western branches are nothing but incompetent fools who have never ever known what they were doing and fluked into any successes they ever had and also absolutely hate Japan. :V

What we learned in the music topic is that Sega of America in the early '90s was run by marketing experts who sometimes seemed more concerned with using domestic assets than with respecting the wishes and intentions of the devs.

Yes, completely hypocritical of them to do this now.

    Now.

Not when making millions of plastic cartridges in 1991 to sell said "environmentalist game".

Only now when it's attributable specifically to Sega of Japan.

EDIT: Seriously, the reaction to this has been infuriating. NFTs are bad, but the way the fanbase's reacted with "fuck Sega of Japan specifically" like the other branches are innocent angels instead of the entire thing being a global megaconglomerate whose green-day activities were just PR stunts just stinks of naïve slightly-racist continuation of 90s culture wars, and the ones instead going "muh Sonic's environmentalist and would never do this, I'm claiming Sonic as my own!" just look like bronies editing Rainbow Dash to photos of the holocaust to be able to relate to the event

This isn’t about it being SoJ though, and while plastic production and waste is a huge environmental issue, there wasn’t really another option for delivering video games. Not that any of this matters because NFT is a new low anyway.

It’s a gussied up pyramid scheme that gives people ownership of what’s effectively a hyper link and probably uses as much energy as printing all those copies of the original Sonic 1 did. My point is it’s not only damaging, but it’s *worthless* outside of the artificial value created by crypto companies to get people into this crap.

At least when you buy a video game you own that physical copy. When you buy an NFT, a ludicrous amount of energy has been expended to crack a computer code which determines said NFT as being worth however many Fadcoins, and you don’t even own the art itself. You own the digital location where the art exists.

In the future wherever this art is being hosted could be pulled or changed to something entirely different without your knowledge or say so. NFTs are literally just a disguised crypto associated with art to try and make it seem like people are actually investing in something. It’s wasted energy and environmental damage for no reason other than capitalism for capitalism’s sake.

*That’s* why this is an issue in particular.
