A few days ago I stumbled across two unused parallax/scroll effect routines for Techno Tower Zone in Sonic Crackers and after studying them, restored them in the base game: The parallax doesn't quite work properly likely since the standard draw system doesn't account for it, but that much isn't surprising. Perhaps the most curious here is the H-scroll ripple effect on the foreground that activates when the screen is beneath Y level $D60, leading me to believe that water was intended for this zone in some form.
It's a bit buggy, obviously, but I managed to mostly get the Mega Play high score table ported to default Sonic 1
Ya that'd be an interesting series, Sonic 1 special stages remade as Blue Spheres (or vice versa even?)
Interesting designs! I love with the first one, it's special stage 1 from Sonic 3 but the bumpers replace the blue spheres and the blue spheres replace the bumpers.

To be honest, the SCD jump sound is really pleasing. I get it will take out some notes from the BGM on these ones, but it's a lot less ear-piercing than the squarewave.
