How many times has Tails actually been called "Miles" outside of characters stating his full name?

It dawned on me yesterday that like, three characters (not counting the comics) have last names--Tails, Amy, and Eggman. Then it dawned on me that despite his actual name being Miles, I cannot recall a single moment in any Sonic game where he has actually been called Miles. Ever. I can't even remember a single time anyone, online or offline, has referred to him as Miles. His name is effectively Tails and always has been. I'm amazed they even bothered to keep that as just a nickname.

Maybe in the comics--I never read those, so I wouldn't know. A lot more characters in the comics have like, actual names instead of obvious cartoon mascot names like Sonic/Knuckles/Shadow/Cream/etc.

Does that include when he's called Miles "Tails" Prower, or just Miles by itself? He's called the former once in SA2 (after the Day X cutscene, when Eggman reads the newspaper article Rouge found), but I'm pretty sure he's never been called just Miles.

  3. His debut in Sonic 2 had a few mentions of his name.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t that the case only in the Japanese version? The US release changed every instance of "miles" for "tails" iirc.

You could re-enable "Miles" in the international version via cheat code.

  6. Yeah you could. In fact it's in the Taxman rerelease of Sonic 1 as well.

I had to double check, but I believe Casino Night is one of the exceptions to this.

His life counter is the only thing that changes based on region/the cheat code. See post below. The menu background and Casino Night always use Miles.

Yeah, came to say this. SA2 finally voiced his full name.

Also in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, his name of 'Miles' was addressed in Tails' backstory, but that's all I can remember.

It’s weird how I never really noticed the Miles/Tails thing. Looks like SOA strong armed that one?

FYI, someone needs to fix the Sonic 3 article referring to Stranger in Moscow. Brad Buxer himself gave us the truth on that one. The S3 credits were just that. SIM was created afterwards and MJ took the credit.

Sonic Jam's Sonic World section had "Touch Miles" as a mission.... :V

  14. No cheat code needed. If you use an emulator, run Sonic 2 in various regions (make sure auto detect is off), and you'd get "Tails" in both US and Europe and "Miles" in Japan in the character select option.

Also, I forgot another instance of his name:

Tails refers to himself as "Miles Prower" in one of the story recap screens in SA2.

  16. Yeah that too.

I also remember his parents calling him Miles in the Archie Comics, but I don't recall the exact issues.

According to the wiki, at the beginning of all his story recap screens in SA2, he says "My name is Miles Prower, but everyone calls me Tails."
In SA1, he says "I'm Miles "Tails" Prower." at the start of the first two recaps, after which he simply says "I'm Tails."

The credits for Sonic Chaos mentions his real name, and hilariously misspells it in almost all revisions of the game too. xD It's misspelled as "Miles Power", but it was fixed in one revision, in that revision they refer to him as just Tails. :V

I can't entirely recall which side of SEGA wanted which name. Weirdly I seem to recall that the Japanese wanted "Miles Prower" which is odd due to the English pun. On the assumption that it was SOA gunning for the name "Tails", I think it worked out fairly well due to the adjective/descriptor theme for character names (Sonic, Mighty, etc), even if it seems weird on the surface that it was the American side not caring for the name pun.

What intrigues me more is how they went about naming Mighty and Ray, given that they had been working on localization for SegaSonic Arcade as evidenced by the SatAM Robotnik sprites within the graphics data. Were they naming the characters with localization in mind? Because we know that in one of the pre-1207 Chaotix prototypes (as evidenced by TodoSega's magazine preview) that Mighty was named "Nat the Armadillo", and it could have easily been a holdover from a name on some concept art after the rushed replacement of Sonic with Mighty.

This last point has strayed from talking about Tails though. I feel it warrants further discussion and possibly it's own thread but there's not much meat to dig through as far as conclusions go, I don't think, and I don't want to shit up the board.
