    Ya that ring cap. The fuck is that? It makes the litany of rings in Casino Forest absolutely meaningless.

    And huh, snow Chemical Plant... yea ok that's fine I guess.

    Every time new stuff is revealed it feels more and more like Sonic Team has learned nothing, and has taken yet another step backwards. Didn't they try the ring cap in Lost World and nobody liked it, resulting in the cap being patched out? Why is history being repeated literally the next game?

    No Lost World didn't have a ring cap, I thought the issue was that rings didn't give you lives initially.

    The Infinite fight is literally the only thing I've seen and thought "Huh. That looks alright". Not Chemical Plant has shit music and shit level design, no change there.

    And now Sonic Team has completely killed off lives so we don't moan about that fact :specialed: Yes SLW never gave you lives when you went past 100 rings and was eventually patched later on.

    You can also lose 20 rings when getting hit now instead of losing all your rings like previous builds which is nice touch but we gain a ring limit which isn't nice.

    I'm struggling to figure out why they aren't showing any more Modern Sonic gameplay. Avatar gameplay looks pretty bland, and Classic is not much but better.

    I hope that Modern Sonic is more complex than the first stage. Hopefully they release a video of another Modern stage soon.

    I though that certain custom hero species had the added benefit of holding on to one ring when taking damage, or were able to pick up dropped rings. Those abilities were dumb to start with, and now seem even more unnecessary.

    I'm not able to watch the video right now, but are you saying that if Sonic has 77 rings and gets hit he will drop down to 57 rings? If so, that explains the 100 ring cap, to prevent the player from having too much "health".
     
  9. Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric had a ring cap too, rings were treated as health like Metroid. Its annoying to be in a world FULL of rings and not be able to watch that counter go up.

    They could've at least gone the DOOM health route and capped at 200. That was where the Genesis games stopped giving you one-ups, too, so it's not like Sonic is a stranger to the effectiveness of his rings diminishing above that point.

    I know it's just kicking the can down the road, but there's at least some logic to it.

    The Rental Hero gameplay's an inoffensive boss fight, okay. The Space Port on the other hand feels like yet another demonstration of how they completely missed the point of their predecessor's Boost design.
     
  12. I bet that having over 100 rings will be an OC trait, like being a rabbit or dog or whatever will let you have more than 100 rings. It feels like they're trying to make 3 games all at once; badly.

    I've been forever the optimist on this game but the most recent footage looks god-awful and is getting rightfully trashed on NeoGAF. The game looks devoid of energy and ambition and seems to be "Sonic Generations but much worse and with an Avatar no-one wanted". I'm staying cautious and waiting on reviews. God damn it Sonic Team. All you had to do was create a spiritual sequel to Generations and hit the same bar of quality as that game and you'd have had a much-loved and admired smash hit on your hands. Instead it looks like you're not even trying.

    I don't think there's anything else for me about the level design that hasn't been covered by most people already. More linear routes on flat terrain, with only springs, dash panels, and same stock "stand and do nothing" groups of enemies to chew through, in both 2D and 3D gameplay. The QTE section is just a long cutscene that seems to have what, only one button press in the whole thing, which is incredibly shallow even for QTE standards. And that Drill Wisp just looks like an even jankier version of Sonic's standard Boost, propelling characters forward with seemingly minimal control. Like the Lightning Wispon I can imagine that move causing several unintended player deaths with how instant it operates. It's mostly rubbish.

    Sounds to me like that's where the new death egg is going to be launched from.

    oh geez, that gameplay
    it's so soulless. the Infinite fight is literally just generic boss movements and waiting

    I don't want to be a negative nancy, but this game looks fucking terrible. If this game gets higher than a 4 or 5 out of 10 then I will be impressed. Especially right on the heels of Mania, because this isn't mediocre or sub par it's just awful. I'm veering for 4 out of 10 personally from what I've seen.

    I really liked Generations, the level design was open and fun. And Modern and Classic complemented each other in a way that makes sense. This just looks horrendous, it's like someone saw the boost to win meme and then made a game based entirely around that.

    Except Avatar doesn't even have boost, so it's just a slow, plodding, automated, boring and scripted mess.

    I really, really hope SEGA sees sense and pulls Sonic Team from the Sonic brand after this game. I don't care if they are trying hard, if they can't be bothered and they are burned out. They have absolutely no idea how to make a good game period.
     

  17. I have a theory.

    Modern Sonic is FAR less prevalent in this title despite being in all the trailers and it being a main line SONIC game. I've seen this kind of thing before with Halo 5. "Hmmmm, 343 (Sega) sure seems to be showing a lot of Spartan Locke (Avatar) gameplay, I wonder why they're not showing as much Master Chief (Modern Sonic) missions?" And what do you know, only 3 out of the 15 missions in Halo 5 had you control Master Chief.

    So I won't be surprised when Modern Sonic comprises less than a third of the actual gameplay.

    The Gamespot video actually has the characters going on about how "the guy who beat Sonic is here", so I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the game actually starts off with Sonic captured and the Avatar and Classic get more emphasis at first before he's rescued.
     
  19. Also, my god. How do you just give up completely with these 3D sections? That's Fool's 3D. That's like taking a 2D game with multiple layers like Little Big Planet and turning the camera behind the character's back. Or for the sake of something more familiar to compare it to, imagine having the maneuverability and space of every Quick Step section from Unleashed, Colors, and Generations for every single 3D section of this game.

    What a regression.
