I am well aware we have a huge 40-page This Song Sounds Like X thread already, but the one I'm suggesting is to share music that DOESN'T sound like any other Sonic tune/song, but has a Sonic 'vibe' to it. I know this is all very subjective, but most of the music in Sonic does seem to suit the Hedgehog quite well, and I'm sure there are plenty of examples which the opposite would be true (like most Mario music for example). This is a thread about music which makes you think "this would sound good in a Sonic game", rather than ones that are already in there. I'll start the [hedgehog] ball rolling by an tune from an old breakaway game called DX-Ball 2 (which I've really enjoyed both the music, and the game in the past) - with the track 'Beatwave'. I can imagine it being a tune on the OVA - or maybe Sonic CD, and it'd go pretty well as a kind of 'Stardust Speedway' type of level perhaps. Or maybe this one (from the same game):
There's a company I do support work for whose phone system's hold music would have fitted right in around Saturn-era Sonic. Don't have any copies of it to link, though =/
I could tell just by looking at the logo that the game in the OP had amiga roots. Sure enough, it's part 3 of a series that originally began on the Amiga as MegaBall.
Nope, I have never owned - or even been on - an Amiga in my entire life! The first computer we had was a Commodore 16, and then went on to Windows 3.11 and upwards (and also getting the Master System when I was little, as well as having a NES - and eventually the Mega Drive and SNES); but never an Amiga. It was a game on one of those old demo discs [I think] from an early PC Zone magazine, or something like that. *edit* Oops, I thought you was referring to me by the 'OP', not the game itself
Those themes in the OP are pretty great, especially BeatWave. Never would've expected a brick breaker game to have music like that. "Effective Attack" from Dragon Ball Kai could work as a special stage theme (especially if sped up) or a track in Sonic Riders or the OVA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vZD06f767g Something I never got around to was seeing how I'd feel about having Soul Calibur II's "Brave Sword, Braver Soul" played over Dragon Road Day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiFdjmDDJcQ The NES Remix I & II Records Roll themes could probably work as the first and second act themes for some sort of carnival/arcade/observatory/Star Light Zone-esque stage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqqBRw-kIOs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-t_ZZsJIrAA I really feel like more examples should have come to mind.
What comes to mind is music from the Ys series, most notably:
Sonic music varies in style. This song hits the type of style I've enjoyed from select songs throughout the franchise (mostly in the 90s). Mostly found in some of the 'past' songs in the Japanese Sonic CD soundtrack.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdW9oM6ZMME Emma Bunton's Maybe always reminded me of Sonic CD or several Sega Arcade/Sat soundtracks.
The instrumentals in the New Girl theme song "Hey Girl" practically sound like they were made for Sonic Adventure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGTOp0rJ1-Q
Baby got Back. Just listen to the bass line. Tell me that's not the makings of the raddest mechanical/factory zone ever made?
I had a few song ideas I was going to lend to the scrapped Sonic 4 fan game on here in 2008, but the game was cancelled before I was able to share my ideas. Now that I'm an actual bass player and not just messing around with keyboards, I will probably work the music I had for a cave level idea into an actual song.
I've got another: http//www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9K18Bfw9aI Feels like a space level. Like Mad Space Act 2 or something.
TBH, "All I Want" by The Offspring sounds like it was made for Sonic. It does have Sega association due to Crazy Taxi but I've felt that it suits Sonic better for a long time. "When Can I See You Again" by Owl City sounds like it was written with Sonic's philosophy in mind as well, even though the song was used for Wreck-It-Ralph.
I'm going to suggest a few artists: YMO (Yellow Magic Orchestra) This reminds me of Sonic 1 and 2 In particular: Firecracker, Tong Poo (this beat will probably ring familiar, eh?) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uy5XPdyhzfw 808 State, album: Ninety. This reminds me of Sonic CD, In particular: Cobra Bora, 808080808, This whole album is very Sonic CD-y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSC2GAfegoM Louis Cole: Really enjoying this right now. Someone mentions DX Ball 2??? Ho man, you have good taste! I used to play this game since possibly 6 years old first time. On that end, the Beatwave mostly fits due using "house"-esque music style on it that you can find in some of Sonic CD's tunes, I think? On that note, I once tried to make videos where I play stages from various 2D Sonics except with music changed to something that fits the stage. Might see if I can try doing that again lately for this thread...
I think what you might be referring to are the .mod/.XM music files [which DX-Ball 2 uses] you can create yourself using the old Fast Tracker II - or the modern Skale Tracker (or plenty of other alternatives) which FTII is based on; both freeware BTW. There are literally 1000s of tunes people have made on there! You can listen to them all here Not sure if Sonic CD uses them though.
Huuuhh- this is really new. But since it's rather old game too and some of the music shared similar beat here and there...
