I think that it permeates a lot more than just what's in the game, but how it works. On a purely mechanical and technical level, everything about Forces works the way it's supposed to. If you asked random people who were aware of the series but maybe didn't play a ton of it, or reviewers who don't do the "Sonic 06 exists therefore bad" thing, the biggest problem with the Sonic series, they'd probably say, is it's functionality, in either design or programming. I mean, do that many people outside the hardcore fanbase really pay all that much attention to the level design outside either egregiously bad examples like Advance 3 or the baseline "boost2win" complaint? Probably not, at least from what I can tell. Additionally, professional reviewers judging Sonic level design only seem to base things in how many pits or enemies catch them off guard when going too fast. Forces is totally a game based in trying to get a lot out of a little, from both sales and reviews. I think the only real reason I'm letting it slide it because it pertains to something I myself don't mind enough to call a bad game. Call that low standards if you feel like it, I just call it a difference in perceived value of design elements (Non-linear level design is for replay value. What does that mean to someone who hardly replays the classic games?). It's not like the level design is as bad as it could be, too -- I'll take something easy and basic enough to beat in an afternoon over something that will hold me hostage for days by being so frustrating.

I wouldn't put too much faith into reviewers thinking it's bad though -- they're closer to the kind of youtube fans you were talking about than they are to the type that stick around here.

  3. this base is so diverse with opinions flying everywhere. Youtube is different from reddit which is different than this.

    From reddit

    From youtube

Including a post from here would be redudant.

  4. You guys have your way of expressing love for the games which isn't bad, you guys don't want to lose the gaming icon you love.
I don't really belong in this topic because i have radically different way of expressing my love for the series, playing and deciding if i could recommend it or not.

None of the ways anyone expresses their love for the blue boy's series is wrong. only the way the way the message gets across. not everyone knows that "Sonic team is lazy and x proves it" translates to "I don't want the series to die because of poor decisions"

First off, you apologized for double posting so I'll just note that as your reminder to not do it again. I just want to suggest taking a break from this thread for a bit, you've been very involved in it throughout the last few pages, using most of your 20 trial posts, from doing everything to going out of your way to say "ignorant" just to bold the "Ign" thing for a tired, unfunny joke, to just a random mention of your age in here. It's nice to have a different perspective on the game in this thread, but it's a bit overbearing at your current rate. You've got a few posts left, do some lurking, note the usual ebb and flow of threads on the board and those who post in them. I'll also request that you shorten your signature a good bit, it's quite long as is and generally quite taller vertically than the posts you are making. Lastly, give our rules a good look over again and then consider how you are carrying yourself here. Don't take this post as rude, just trying to help you.

To add to that, from your overall writing style I kinda get the impression that Retro isn't quite your cup of tea. If you stick around that's great (though you should lurk) but I think another board like GameFAQs might be more your speed. Just an idea though!

I'm gonna have to agree with the oldies.
I'm a "youngster-loving-modern-sonic-a-lot" myself, and I'm really looking forward to Forces, but the attitude you're having here isn't really helping your case.

Remember, this website is called Sonic RETRO. It's only natural to find people liking classic sonic more than modern Sonic here.

Thought I too shall offer my views.

Forces had me hyped at first. After the huge disappointment with Lost World, I was excited to see a return to the formula that worked wonders to bring Sonic back. It was a genuine relief, and I wasn't bothered that Classic Sonic was back. And then gameplay gets revealed.

What a fall from the beauty of Generations' level design. In Generations, levels like Sky Sanctuary Classic were actually more fun to me than the original. Yes, it's a bummer that physics aren't true to the classics, but the level design made up for it. As for Modern, I still hold that there's been almost no Sonic level better design than Seaside Hill Modern, or Sky Sanctuary Modern. These games took the ideas of the classics and put them to great use. Now, Forces. Classic's new Green Hill... just... why. The Mania team gives a review that Sonic level design is all about slopes, and the real Sonic Team makes a Classic Sonic level in 2D with almost no slopes, just straight lines and just... springs, everywhere. Put the aside, Sunset Heights. Alright, I'm gonna actually be nice on this level. It's pretty much a straight line, but it looks beautiful and could serve as a good introduction level. Tropical Resort 1, Windmill Isle 1/2, Green Hill Modern were all pretty linear, so hopefully Sunset Heights does not represent the level design of the rest of the game. The Tag Team level actually had my interest, I really liked Sonic Heroes and I was glad to see that idea return. The level started out just fine, and went down the drain with the base section. That's not how platforming or how alternate paths should be done. And Shadow's stage... well, they're mission stages like the ones in Generations so I'm not bothered.

Sonic Team has forgotten all the lessons they learned from the Boost trilogy. An absolute pity. But I do hope that this is only the sentiment for these stages which are at the start of the game. God, I hope the later levels are well designed... but this game seems to be taking inspiration from Colours for level design... and that's not exactly a great thing in my opinion.

Yet, despite all the flaws, the story has me interested, and I still am expecting/hoping to have a good time. Sonic games are my favourites, and they offer me fun that I can find almost nowhere... and that's also the sad part. Forces could have been great. All they needed to do is build upon Generations, but things went the other way.

On one hand, I want Forces to do well so that SEGA knows that fans would like plots with more substance... on the other hand, I don't want it to be a huge success so that they realise the huge flaws in this product. Sonic Team needs to be shaken up somehow, to realise that they can do much better. They need to look back at their games and see what was good about them, what was bad about them. I hope that happens soon. Still hoping to have a good time, but I'm very cautious in the little optimism I have.

(okay but I must say I'm glad Silver's back - it's such a pity that such a cool character ended up in the trainwreck that is 06.)

  11. Well this looks....interesting I guess! The music's probably the best of any of the gameplay videos I've seen so there's that. I really like the chunky drums at the start of the song, wonder what sample that is?

Dear sweet lord give it to meeeee

I love the trope fusion going on here

But seriously, look how goddamn slow he goes, even downhill, unless he's being forced along by a speed booster. Why does he not gain speed going down hills? It can't be that difficult :colbert:

    Here's another gameplay video.

I like the level idea, looks great, music's fine. Still not sure how feel, but a huge improvement in the level design.

  14. Momentum conservation is very hard to program? I can't excuse it. There's so much else wrong I'd just rather them release the music LOL.

He can stand on the tips of curved ledges @ 1:21. Like what? Why does the ball roll sound play on such a delay @ 1:27 or so? It like...plays again? I can't even tell. The very end of the video, he builds up all that speed, and then carefully enters what looks like a worse version of the Sonic 1 speed cap to run carefully past the sign, as to not disturb it in its natural habitat.

Hm combining two classic Sonic level tropes isn't a terrible idea, but after Mania, this feels awfully empty and short. And what's with the massive overabundance of rings?
    But yeah, pretty good music.

    Wow. This is good shit.
The level design is such an improvement compared to Flat Hill Zone
(Still, I wish they would've shown the Modern Sonic version, but whatever)

Well, the game doesn't let you collect rings back once you lose them. It's straight to 0 if I remember correctly, so that's probably why.

That TGS video has him rolling down the hill at 0:41, at least he gains some speed that way ¯\_(?)_/¯

Above all it's comforting to know that the later levels have more complex level design.

  19. Nice to finally have a new stage to look at! Level looks pretty enough and I like the trope mash-up, although it is giving me serious Sonic 4: Episode 2 vibes... I really, really hope that we get to go into those neon buildings in an Act 2 or as another character.

On the downside, Classic Sonic looks like he plays worse than in Generations, there were a few times there where his speed changed dramatically for no reason. Also what was up with those jagged down hill "slopes" in the second half of the video? It was pretty jarring considering there are other sections that have slopes that are actually rounded/curved. I have to agree with what some others have said though, definitely looks better than Green Hill so I'll give them that.

They also seriously need to chill with the rings, that's ridiculous even for a casino themed stage...

EDIT: Just watched the IGN version which shows off a fair bit more of the level, I'm cool with it and glad we are getting to see more. Fingers crossed for some Modern/Custom gameplay from the stage too!

Well I'm glad the situation changed the next day. :v:

That looks like a good upgrade from what we saw so far, although I don't think it's quite up to the level of quality of their past games. It certainly stings a bit after we got Mania when it comes to classic levels.

But it's a step in the right direction.
