    Going to change the subject here folks. Since we're getting the S3 zones differences treatment, I wonder...
    If act 2 of Mirage Saloon is like Desert Dazzle...do you think it's possible that act 1 is....
    DUST HILL ZONE?!

    Dust Hill never existed outside of the planning board, so nope. You can't recreate something that wasn't made into a map. The mockup was made to make Mirage Saloon (Desert Dazzle) art and that's it.

    Speaking more generally (to at least try to respect the topic-change): truth be told, even the initial screens released to the press were clearly ripped from a compressed video. I don't believe we have fully-clean rips of any of this artwork anywhere on the Internet, and probably won't until the game comes out.

    Pretty much. We can already see that the cacti from the Dust Hill screens show up in Mirage Saloon.

    Besides, Dust Hill's basic idea--a Desert Zone--had already been partially implemented in the Sonic 2 multiplayer as Desert Palace Zone and in Sonic 3 as Sandopolis. Mirage Saloon appears to be the last piece.

    What we really should be looking forward to seeing is Rock Zone.

    Thank you, I was unable to see the smile everyone was talking about. It looked like its cheek to me from the start, but since the video and pic are blurry I was starting to doubt.

    Not sure what your point is. Tails' hands should be overlapping at least the part of Sonic's that they're grabbing.


    Yes, it was like that in Sonic 3 already, but it's a bit more noticeable with the more detailed graphics and animations.

    Seems the more things change, the more they stay the same XD. The greatest thing on Earth has finally happened and there's still no getting rid of the dissatisfaction. I can't with you people sometimes. Thanks for the demonstration though.
     

  11. Or a version of the R2 mock up. I really liked the ideas they had going for that, rainbows waterfalls & ruins...

    The thing is with Sonic Retro peeps is that when something is as good as Sonic Mania, they look at it through a microscope to find something wrong, and I think that speaks for the quality of something. (Although I agree with Shadow Hog that we should wait to see uncompressed art before we judge little things like this.) Sometimes I forget this quirk of the community in the heat of the nitpicking, but it's not necessarily bad. (So I apologize for that a couple pages back.)

    If you want truly baseless nitpicking that makes you want to scream, try the Freedom Planet forums. There's a whole thread about Lilac's chin and it was downright awful, when TysonTan had already addressed his initial mistakes with more illustrations after the fact. Ridiculous things like that are why I hang around here more often than there. :v:

    What I meant to say was, "Sonic is grabbing Tails' hands from outside". Perhaps I am not explaining well enough what I'm trying to say?

    Well...I'm already doing my own interpretation of R2 (Prism Palace ring any bells people?)

    Well I thought Taxman only find the R2 badniks as the assets are long gone or something.
    It would be difficult as there's only one concept art of R2.
    They could use that idea for Aquatic Ruin zone as it's a bit similar
     
  17. After watching a view of the vids, I'm really hoping they rework some of the level layouts. They don't quite feel right. I'm getting Sonic CD vibes with the lack of direction and weird paths; plus lots of random spikes and other objects hitting you. I'm being super critical though, aren't I?

    The stage is pretty wonderful, but Knuckles isn't really the same without a smile - he looks a bit grumpy compared to Sonic 3 and Chaotix, and his gliding animations could do with being a bit flatter too - it doesn't feel very aerodynamic.

    With Tails, I think all the flying animations look a little strange, as he has his butt in the air and his tails don't separate until quite high up. It looks less like he's using his twin tails to fly, and more like they're tangled up.



    I did notice, however, that in one of the videos, computer-controlled Tails will still happily start spindashing in the opposite direction to Sonic. Yes Sonic 2 and 3 did this too, but it's a good opportunity to fix some of the Mega Drive games' shortcomings.


    Mirage Saloon is probably the best 2D Sonic level I've seen since Sonic 3&K though, and that's an achievement.

    Hmm. Is it just with Mirage Saloon or also with Studiopolis? It all just looks kinda smooth to me, and that's while taking into account that this is one of the later, harder levels.

    Mirage Saloon kinda reminds me more of Casino Night Zone. For a Sonic 2 level, that level seemed huge to me, and I sorta get the same feeling from what we've seen so far.

    Personally it'll never be "Sonic CD" unless they incorporate the time travel mechanic on top of everything. Yeah, the levels were crazy huge and labyrinthine, I'll give you that, but without the time traveling it's just a different experience.

    Other than that, everything's just a delightful visual parfait to me, especially Mirage Saloon. I'm hoping to see something like Marble Zone next. I wanna see how the Mania Team tackles an old castle ruin with lava moats. Either that or Metallic Madness, that shit's tight.
