This interests me much more than the SA2 documents, if only because I feel like both versions of Sonic 1 are two subsets of the original vision. It's a shame there isn't much shown there.
So... is the gameplay in Sonic Adventure DX PC's Sky Chase tied to resolution? A friend of mine just sent me this video, running the game at 4K (possibly supersampling as well?) 8K downsampled to a 1080p display: http://youtu.be/ZEyXXZIokRQ Obviously this is not supposed to happen. Any ideas what's going on here? Is this a bug in the original game, or a result of using Fixed Edition?
I played the Steam release of SADX and I remember that I had to switch at the lowest resolution to make those 2 stages playable, let alone getting the score emblems, so it's definitely tied to resolution as I was not using any mod at the time. At very high resolutions you pretty much have to make pixel perfect movements to hit or lock on to enemies.
That's vanilla SADX behavior. They had good intentions, but they probably never anticipated it running at such high resolutions :v:. I intend to fix it eventually.
The "You don't stop, you proceed, this is what you need" samples used in Rush's "What U Need" appear in Irritating Stick for PSX. https://youtu.be/ryM_IRe9P5I?t=428 https://youtu.be/07b5NyOaeEg?t=259
Hmm, here's something weird. In the original Japanese release of Sonic Adventure, there are tons of files that were removed/merged into other files for the first American release. Among the files I noticed were specific character voices and sound effects for Casinopolis. In the final game, you can only enter the area as either Sonic, Knuckles or Tails. But apparently at one point, everyone could go to Casinopolis. There even exists a flag for Amy that activates the Casinopolis door, and a separate flag for Big to activate the door into the Casinopolis area of Station Square that both go unused. Here are the extra .MLT files for this: CASINO_AMY.MLT CASINO_AMYVOICE.MLT CASINO_BIG.MLT CASINO_BIGVOICE.MLT CASINO_E102.MLT CASINO_E102VOICE.MLT You can download the MLT files here.
So I was looking up the credits for Sonic Unleashed, and I found this: It's probably a mistake on the wiki, but haha, very funny
Something overlooked http://retrocdn.net/index.php?title=File%3ARaze_UK_10.pdf&page=14 As I've said before I think there are three meaningful Sonic 1 prototypes that are likely to be tracked down (Tokyo Toy Show 1990, Winter CES 1991 (the one with the debug in the bottom right) and this one). Sounds like Labyrinth, Spring Yard (Sparkling) and Scrap Brain (Clock Ork) were locked off during normal play, similar to what the Sonic 2 Wai beta does with unfinished levels. This backs up my assertion that Labryinth and Scrap Brain were probably empty and couldn't be finished during normal play.
Possibly, though there aren't actually any screenshots of that stage, and Star Light... looks more like a city I suppose? Raze doesn't seem to have been very good at screenshots though, what with it printing the same shot twice. The subsequent review is a bit of a mess in that regard too.
So... There's some new Mega Drive music with Sonic sound effects playing at the Drop Dead site for some reason. EDIT: Oh, it's from here. False alarm. =\
Makes you wonder if the artist is aware of it, though. I'd hope so, but, in this day and age, you never know.
Curtosy of CVG #131: http://I.imgur.com/r7rmXft.jpg http://I.imgur.com/DsqdwdT.jpg Sonic 2 beta coverage. Ignore the screenshots - those are Sega's, but there's a few interesting comments such as not being able to see Tails fly, but those net tubes in Metropolis Zone working.
Spoiler I realised today while playing around in SA2 HD's Sky Rail that these turbine objects seem to have some sort of placeholder text on the outside edge. Spoiler It says "tonbi", which Google says is Kite - the birds flying around in the stage. Taking a closer look at the sides, you can see they've accidentally assigned the texture for the birds' head onto it. This error isn't present in the other versions.
Oh boy, AtGames is making new Genesis-on-a-chip consoles for Sonic's 25th anniversary. At least Polygon is aware that this isn't a new concept. So many other people and sites are making it seem like this is Sega's entry into the mini console war or something. This is something I expect people to be a little confused about, honestly. If you've never paid attention to the previous attempts I have no problem with you thinking this is Sega's first portable Genesis. At least it's not as simple to Google as this. + - I know it's completely off-topic, but it's so embarrassing that no one thought to search Google before they recorded, edited, and published a four minute video essentially making asses of themselves .
