Current-Gen Haters Callout

    In response to the negativity around Heroes, Sonic Adventure, the Advance series, etc. etc., I'm calling you current-gen haters out. Simply answer my riddle thus:

    You are head of Sonic Team. You have total control over the next Sonic the Hedgehog game in development. What will this game be like?

    Describe the perfect next-gen Sonic game you want in detail - if you cop-out with 'better collision', 'better plot', 'better music' or whatever, you automatically fail. Let's see what we get here.

    I am not a "current-gen hater" I loved SA1 and SA2. I simply hated heroes because it sucked.

    In response to your question:

    1: Focus more on Sonic.

    2: Work out bugs and glitches before I release it.

    Simple, no?

    Yeah I liked Sonic Adventure 1, and Sonic Advance 1, but I haven't played SA2 or Heroes and didn't like the other advance games as much as the first, I think they became too flakey.

    But yeah the main things I ask are No new characters and also addictive but not too involving gameplay. One of the things I liked about the original sonics is you felt you could put the controller down at any point, in a lot of newer games you kinda get locked in, it's hard to describe. Crash Bandicoot also had a similar kinda not-too-involving feel to it.

    Two-dimensional platformer with panning camera and cel-shaded graphics ? la Viewtiful Joe. Playable characters include Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. Antagonist is Eggman, and ONLY Eggman. Gameplay uses the Donkey Kong Country series' buddy system allowing you to switch between characters as you go, but only two at a time. Alternatively, a second player can control the second character - splitscreen or via two consoles with LAN or online play. Each stage would have two parts, one leading into the other like in Sonic 3. Online multiplayer modes would include 16 player races through full levels from the real game and other bonus modes such as "collect the most rings."

    Focus on having one bad guy not ten. A game with just Eggman as your enemy would be better then Shadow and all these other people thrown in there. Also just have the normal charecters: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Eggman (Amy if it's nessecery). All these other people like Cream, Shadow, Big and anyone other new charecter makes people forget who the main guy really is: Sonic.

    I'm not a current gen hater - in fact, I'm a current gen supporter, but if *I* had control of sonic team - hoo boy would I have fun

    FIRST OFF :
    modability - no more hacking, all editing of the games will be fully supported with dev tools and gameplay source

    Second :
    Darker world. More black and red. Old sonic is too bright and cheery. Give us a REAL bad guy, like a stronger shadow with EXTREMELY honed psionic abilites. Gameplay will no longer be bright forests, but dark, dirty, and decayed castles and industrial fields. A very cyberpunkish game with a slightly apocalyptic edge, but more of a dismal abyss. Traps will be much more common, and enemy population should double and be varied. spike pits and flailing spikeballs will be very common.

    Third:
    Characters
    The game should be totally speed character oriented - the only characters available sonic, knuckles, tails, and shadow (Sonic and Tails will be older). Tails and knuckles will play like sonics of old, where they retain their climbing and flying ability but still compare in speed to sonic and shadow. Sonic and shadow will no longer be exactly the same but rather, sonic will have a higher topspeed, but shadow will accelerate much more quickly, and shadow will have better jumping and turning ability. Shadow will be able to walljump and airdash as opposed to sonic's more plain running and spindash.

    Fourth:
    Multiplayer
    The game will be 4 player in certain modes, up to 6 players in Tournament Mode. There will be 4 modes - Deathmatch - you use your attacks on the other character, and/or try to push them into traps (deathmatch is 4 player), Cooperative - You try to complete the game with one other person (co-op is only 2 player), Race - players try to get to the goal first (race is 4 player), and Tournament - Players will fight deathmatch style, except only 2 players at a time. In tournament mode, 2 players are put against eachother and the loser leaves the arena, and the next player enters. This continues until the champion loses, and the other player in the arena becomes the new champion (Tournament mode is 6 player). Multiplayer mode will have 6 selectable characters - Sonic, Shadow, Metal Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. They will each have balanced melee attacks, but no ranged SA2 style "special attacks" that you get with rings. All multiplayer will be INTERNET enabled.

    Amen. And I'll hate Shadow simply because it's a disgrace to the sonic name. Hey-it looks like a good game, but it's a disgrace.

    Here's what I think. And what I'm working on. Nobody can complain about it.

    Sonic 3 and Knuckles, in full 3D. With speech and more explanation for the plot as it goes along.

    Picture the Axe-Chopping boss from mushroom hill act 1, in full 3D, throwing huge blocks of wood at you as you run towards it-the only way to describe it would be "qwp."

    And don't forget the two-player mode. Still there.

    If anyone remembers my stupid little "Sonic revisited 3D" demo, start thinking of it again, except that first screenshot that was from the C++ demo is what you should be thinking about....

    If anyone can program C++ very well, or can model in 3D with MD2 files, give me a shout. I'm waiting.

    I like the Mushroom Hill boss idea. I also think Marble Garden Act 2's boss would be pretty cool.

    Option 1.
    Go for 2.5D.
    Sonic works better in 2D, everyone knows that.
    Shove in fancy cameras, and other 3D stuff, but give us 2D gameplay.
    Left, Right, Jump. That's all we need.

    Option 2.
    Expand the 3D Field.
    Sonic can run REALLY FAST, so give us big open areas to run around and play in.
    The opening video on Sonic Heroes, where he's doing those big open-air jumps around the rocky area. That's cool.. Let us play in a zone that plays like that.

    Pick either one, then add the following rules.

    1. One button.. Jump, Home Attack/Fly/Glide, should work fine, right?
    2. Either give us 2 or 3 characters, or give us entire storylines for each one like you did with SA1. (or better!)
    3. Robotnik is supposed to be a baddy!
    4. Let us play Multiplayer mode, without having to complete the game 75 times to unlock all the different modes/maps..
    5. Level one should not take 5 minutes to complete!!

    The game needs to have beautiful enviroments and music that would be suitable for that enviroment. badniks that reflect the enviroment ( having a penguin in a winter level ). no chaos, finding chaos emeralds and being able to play as super sonic during regular game play.

    A giant puzzle level *not too difficult, but challenging.*, larger areas for you to gain speed and run around and perform tricks, a giant octopus villian, some cool mini games that you can earn as bonuses, a level where tails can use his skyfox or some other machine to have a dog fight in the air *star wars death star battle*.

    That's all I can think of right now.

    BTW WOODZONE02, S3&K remake would be awesome, but Yuji Naka wouldn't do it probably as he has said in an interview that he likes to do "NEW" things like make shitty characters that have no purpose(cream,big,amy,rogue,shadow,etc..).

    My only big complaint about current gen games..

    Pits

    A game is broken when most of the time you deaths are nto from your enemies delivering a final blow, but your enemies getting lucky and throwing you into a pit, or falling into a pit because of unstable controls.

    I'm not a pit hater, but they shouldn't be the primary cause of death. SA1 wasn't bad, and SA2 was a little worse in this aspect, but not bad (most pits were in the last leves where they should be). But in Sonic Heroes, the second level and on was platforms over puts the entire time. Why is a Casino up 100 stories about ground like that?

    Improving enemies would help compensating lessening pits.

    So for my idea for the ideal next gen game...

    Basic Story (every game has them)- After seeing numerous battles of losing to Sonic going Super, Robotnik decides to fight fire with fire. By designing an enemy Robot that can go Super form, he plans on defeating Sonic and conquering the world.

    In the normal story, Sonic will go through levels, and rather than having him collect the emerals in story mode, he will collect them in special stages like the old games.

    Also, every boss will be Robotnik until the last fight.

    The game has three endings...

    Ending 1- No emeralds: The Final Robot will have a super form, but Sonic will not.

    Ending 2- Some emeralds: Niether Sonic or the Final Robot will ahve a Super form.

    Ending 3- The first fight will be the same as ending 2's fight, but a second fight will happen that Robotnik drains power from the Chaos emeralds to make himself/a machine go Super. Sonic will have to defeat this boss without a Super form.

    Also the differnet characters will have the same levels, but have differnt routes akin to Sonic 3&K. I really didn't like the repeating levels of Hereos too much.

    Extra Unlockables-

    Metal Sonic Skin: For Sonic's levels

    Playable Robotnik: For replay

    And to make up for not having a final Super level like in the past 3 next gen games, an unlockable 3d Doomsday Zone remake would be a bonus.

    Characters:

    Sonic: He'll still have his moves fromt the previous games. Light Dash will cause his paths to differ from the other characters.

    Tails: No Mecha this time. Flying obviously will play into his levels. He'll also have use of a small robto to go places he can't (like in 'Tails Adventure" for Game Gear).

    Knuckles: Same moves also. He'll break through walls and be able to tunnel through soft dirt Bugs Bunny stle to get to other areas.

    Shadow: Similar to Sonic, yet rather than having Light Dash, Chaos Control will allow him to go differnt paths.

    Amy:. She can activate switches to open differnt paths with her hammer.

    Rouge- Almost a mix between tails and Knuckle's Styles. She can fly and destroy obsicals, but she can't dig nor does she have use of the Robot. She also has Ultrasonic Vioce attacks.

    Robotnik (replaying)- He'll have acess to all players moves with his Eggmobile. A shoulder button or somethign will switch player modes, and he'll have a unique player mode to fit himself too.

    As for the new robot charater, he'll be destroyedat the end of the game for no combacks.

    My story may need work, but this is somethign I came up in roughtly 5 minutes :P .

    1. I said that, not woodzone02. You will see this remake in a little while.
    2. This isn't about Yuji, and quit putting him down for no reason. I hated heroes just as much as the next guy, but not to the point where I hate Yuji Naka, whoever hates him is a moron.
    3. Amy isn't new. If you know much about Sonic, you'd know she's been in multiple games since Sonic CD.

    Ok, my game would focus on the platforms and the engine would be like the ones used in viewtiful joe, that's gotta be one of my more favorite next-gen platformers. Secondly, I'd shoot whoever suggests bottomless pits in a face. Extensive testing for abilities would be done(this appears to be a skipped step in SH). Finally, good advertising, I loved the advertising campaign for Mercenaries. :P

    I thought you meant Gens at first. I don't care terribly much about the newer games, IMO they aren't anything bad.

    -2D gameplay, perhaps with some 3D stuff in the BG if it doesn't look too off.
    -No realistic stuff, imaginative worlds plz.
    -Arcade-ish gameplay without stuff that would stop the fast pace like conversations and such.
    -More playable characters, but not needed to see Sonic's good ending.
    -Levels that can be finished in less than 1 minute if you study the paths, enemies, hazards, moving platforms and such.
    -Robotnik as the main boss of every level, in his ship with some wacky device attached.
    -Innovative Special Stages for the Chaos Emeralds.

    -Bring back the old character designs (with Sonic's "swirling feet" effect and all). I'll never get tired of saying this. =P



    I think that would make for a good Sonic 4.

    Believe it or not, that effect WAS in sonic adventure - but only the DC version
