I have 2 S&K's, it just acts like the ones in the middle aren't there IIRC. The glitches are probably from his poorly constructed tower leaning and borking connections.
At a software level, S&K ignores all the additional carts because they are too large in file size. The glitchiness is likely to be a result of the power consumption of that tower of carts. The system simply cannot properly power that many.
Someone should try a hundred Sonic & Knuckles cartridges and watch the system burn out. FIRE, FIRE, FIRE! Oh wait you burned out your Genesis in a glad of smoke. My thoughts are what gold lightning had said. The Genesis was not designed to power that many carts. It's not rocket science why the 32X requires it's own AC Adaptor as that thing would suck the power out of it and eventually burn something out, although it could have been designed better not to harm the Genesis eventually if someone doesn't have the power cord in it. I see all those carts being unhealthy for the Genesis. 2 or 3 cartridges are fine. Game Genie + Sonic & Knuckles + Sonic The Hedgehog 3 won't burn anything out. 4 or more is just testing your luck. Depends on how much power you can suck from the slot before weird things happen.
Is it power or just wonky connections, because I'd assume a middle S&K cart wouldn't be doing anything to consume that much power. A 32X without power, for example, works as a pass-through. So theoretically you could shove tons of (unconnected) 32Xes on top of each other without problems. Oh and I second the browser-crashing autoplays btw. YouTube would have been better.

Yeah, I likewise wasn;t able to get the page to load - but what was already said about power draws. I think the most I've hooked up at one time (and it still boot things) was Virtua Racing --> S&K --> Game Genie --> Honeybee region converter cart.
I once plugged a 32X into S&K, then Sonic 3 into that. It turned on and played unmodified S&K except for a weird color scheme (which, as I now know, turned out to be a U/V chroma swap), but it also erased all save data on S3 for some reason.
Yeah... not gonna bother with the website, as it keeps on making my browser crapping on me. Tried countless times, so crappy.
The 32X is different. It's an add on to the main console that uses many of it's own signals to go back and forth between the Genesis part and the SEGA CD side (with the Genesis being the man in the middle). The weight of the thing is unhealthy for the S&K cartridge and I'm not surprised at the Sonic 3 cartridge losing all it's save data as the signals probably got really messed up. The 32X can't communicate with the Genesis through a Game Genie or S&K cart or something else. It's supposed to communicate directly with the Genesis. Just luckily you didn't damage something permanently sending signals through things that weren't designed for it. You can make Sonic 3 lose all it's saved data just by monkeying around with PAR Codes or debug mode through a nasty crash. Not a surprise at all. The mask ROM can't be overwritten just fried but the FRAM chip (where the save data is) can be overwritten.
