Hello everyone! I have started a kickstarter project to raise funds to hire an orchestra to record my Sonic medley. I had already made an attempt on my own but unfortunately because I could only afford to fund one hour of recording time, we couldn't finish the entire project! So now I turn to kickstarter to raise the funds: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/168850550/sonic-the-hedgehog-medley-and-halo-suite-orchestra The pitch video has clips of the recordings we did get done including Green Hill Zone, Metropolis Zone, Final Boss theme (Sonic 3) and Sky Sanctuary Zone. Oh yes, here is a preview ( one mic position only) of Sky Sanctuary Zone as performed by the orchestra: My link
This is a modest proposal with a modest goal! Really looking forward to seeing how it turns out. I'm not too sure how you plan to distribute but you might want to think about clearing licensing very early on since that can be very tricky and you don't want to be stuck holding the cake if it becomes a problem. This is -especially- true of S3&K. Another somewhat subjective/sensitive issue I feel I should bring up is, it really is not an embarassment to beef up your production with sample libraries sitting behind the live musicians. I know there's mindset where an all-live recording is more honest, but really, unless you have serious money to throw on a decent-sized ensemble that sound good sight-reading, making whatever concessions to get the job done usually results in a better product as far as the end listener is concerned. I've done this stuff before. Contact me if you need advise and/or actual mixing/engineering services.
Oh ya, have fun figuring out how to get permission to do anything S3K. People can't even say what songs they made. Ridiculous.
Ah, hey! You clarified a licensing thing on tumblr with me about this lately, I go by sceniclightspeed. Good to see you again.
I've previously had Sonic 2 music ( Casino Night Zone:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUU_FwQiYx4) licensed through Joypad records. They sounded confident they could get me the new licenses I require, but I'm also having legal representation contact SEGA for me just in case! I want to give it a test run though with Sky Sanctuary Zone. I realized that some of what I recorded could be used to make an album of just orchestrated sonic tunes on loop like in game music. But I don't know if anyone would be interested in that... Thanks for the thoughts on backing up the orch with synth! I was hesitant to use those but I may. The recordings I've released so far have been from one mic so I haven't quite heard it in it's final form so I think I will be contacting you about mixing and mastering if you are for hire! Good to see you too! So far from my talks with Joypad records, everything seems to still be sailing straight.
How are you planning to record and mix it? Orchestras are a bitch to record, so make sure you're not going in blind.
I already have an orchestra in prague I link up with through the internet at a studio in LA. Everything is already set up for the orchestra to be recorded, the arrangements are ready and SEGA is basically on the ready to issue a license, all I need is funding! Mixing will be done by some entity other than myself, but that is also what the funding is for.
Does the license prevent you from printing on disc to give people the album for donating a certain amount of money? I have a feeling this is the case, but it drive a lot of donations I think.
It really depends on the license requested but in the case of my project, all gifts are digital. I would like to have a printed album with art and the works, but given it being just two songs, I just couldn't ask for more money from the community than I have to. If I am successful with these recordings and can go on to do a full album, I would definitely have my legal council go after printing and such. It's a shame you didn't include Jun Senoue's extension in the second loop of Sky Sanctuary, it would sound great in orchestra. But now a question: "Thank you! You get the two recordings as digital downloads several weeks before everyone else!" "The above PLUS free MP3s of Sky Sanctuary Zone and the Sonic 3 Final Boss theme looped upon release of Sonic and Halo recordings" So if you'll get MP3s on the third pledge, what will you get in the first?
I'm sorry that I'm not able to give any funding. Parents and all that. If it's possible, though, I'd love to see the full score--possibly standalone parts for clarinet 1 and 2? This is really looking like something, and I'd love to play it on my own for fun.
