Sonic Lost World (Wii U, 3DS, PC) Megathread

    Game looks veeerrrry interesting.

    I like the graphical style and I don't think it has to do with a processing-power argument or anything like that. Unleashed/Generation's levels with all their crazy lighting and effects involve an *insane* amount of production. This means levels take a long time to create/tweak/iterate because the art cost is high. A simpler style like this probably means better, more fun, longer levels. And honestly it fits Sonic just fine.


    Also, the gameplay looks like Bug! (and Bug Too!)

    I honestly didn't expect that they would allow that. I thought that since it was a Nintendo/SEGA joint effort that any third party help would be abolished. Guess I was sorely mistaken. :/

    Ok, I wasn't expecting a lot from this game... Now I just want to buy a WiiU. Damn, I love the style.

    The rush/rush adventure games were good because they weren't tie-ins. Colors (was ok.. not as good as the rush series) and Generations were rushed jobs as tie-ins for the console counterparts. Honestly, I blame SEGA and only SEGA for the portable games we've been getting lately because those portable versions have no where near the development time as the console counterparts. They basically tell DIMPS "you have 6 months to work on this game, chop chop". Major reason Generations for 3DS was disappointing.

    Hopefully the 3DS game this time around is better.

    EDIT: And around 1:04 in that trailer, when he's homing attacking a straight line of motobugs, there are 4 blue diamonds behind them that could very well function like those lazer diamonds in Colors.

    Don't do those fast 180º turns, SEGA.

    I loved the fact that they're back at geometric forms to develop their art. Really think that the game looks nice, little bit over-saturated, and with some assets that imo doesn't look that good, but overall nice.

    I liked the design of the SkyLanders new enemies, except for the yellow one and the blue emo one.

    The parkout abillity sounds pretty cool and the overall game's premise looks interesting, like some sort of Super Sonic Galaxy. I just don't see how they will fit in nicely in a fast-action type of game, but after Colors and Generations I give ST the benefit of the doubt. Also, Mirror's Edge had parkour and fast action, so I guess it can be done.

    I just think they were a bit too shy in the textures and models. Just because you want to give it a cartoon-y feel, doesn't mean it has to be made with flat colors and models with non-existent details. Wind Waker is a clear example of how a to make cartoon style work out nice. I just hope we end up seeing more than just Mario Galaxy's version of Green Hill Zone, it would be nice if some other past stages got this treatment.

    Wisps only broke the flow of the game and made it more generic NES platforming more than anything else.

    The art style and animations don't seem nearly as developed or refined as Unleashed and Generations, which is very disappointing. HOWEVER, the gameplay looks astoundingly fun, and in the end, as as that's the case, I can ignore the art style. Not like the Green Hill stage of any Sonic game has been a good indication of each game's style anyway. Still, Unleashed and Generations were so pretty....

    Okay. I'm seriously hyped now! That looked amazing. =D

    Here's some things I noticed when I watched the trailer:

    -Clearly, this game is making a lot of references to Sonic X-treme. The first level just screams Jade Gully Zone, from the stylized wavy waterfalls and the spiral wooden bridges all the way to the checkered walls littered with clover and the diamond-leafed trees. Maybe this is Sonic Team's way of saying "We didn't forget about Sonic X-treme." =P
    —Speaking of Jade Gully, did you notice the other environments in the teaser image? There was an ocean, a volcanic wasteland, and an icy tundra. Perhaps these will be levels referencing Blue Ocean, Red Sands, and Crystal Frost, respectively. Then again, Red Sands was part-desert and part-magma, and Lost World has both of those zones, so both of those levels could share familiar elements from Red Sands Zone. Come to think of it, maybe the name "Lost World" is actually a faint reference to the fact that we all thought the world of Sonic X-treme was lost forever until now.
    -A CG scene in the trailer demonstrated Sonic running directly up a wall, a la Espio the Chameleon from Knuckles' Chaotix. This leads me to believe the new Sonic Boost allows Sonic to run up and along walls. You can even see him use it briefly to run up the first log on a bridge.
    -Several parts of the trailer showed that Sonic can now grab onto ledges and pull himself up.
    -Sonic's classic run from Generations returns, only this time it's no longer exclusive to Classic Sonic. =P For a moment, I could swear I saw what looked like the Super Peel-Out, and it was shaped a lot like it was in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. On the other hand, I don't see why he'd need that in this game.
    -It seems like Sonic can now kick his enemies to defeat them. Not sure I like this one...
    -The '90s Badnik design style returns in full form. The Flickies are also more prominent than ever, as one is freed every single time Sonic destroys a Badnik. Perhaps the Flicky capsules will also return?
    -I could faintly hear Sonic's jump sound from the MD/Genesis games whenever he jumped. Also, you can hear the classic "pop" sound whenever a Badnik is destroyed. This game is really trying to recapture the old-school Sonic style!
    -I noticed Sonic ran into a small golden bell during the gameplay. What does this new item do? I noticed it appeared right where the path took a sharp 90º turn. Hmm...
    -Mutiple intersecting paths confirmed! Notice how many paths ran perpendicular to the straight path Sonic was running along.
    -The usual Sonic Boost from Unleashed/Colors/Generations is nowhere to be found in the trailer, but the classic boosters are still abound. Also, Sonic does not appear to retain his double jump from Colors.
    -The Homing Strike is still in this game, but it doesn't seem as powerful as it used to be. The crosshair sound can still be heard when Sonic approaches an enemy mid-jump, but it seems like the attack is a lot shorter in range than before, and it looks like you'll be using it mostly to slam down into your enemies rather than using it to cross chasms or hit faraway foes. You'll also be using it in rapid succession for combos, although I for one would find the classic spin-dash to be much more efficient. =P
    -Graphically, the game looks on par with Generations, if not a step up from it. We can see light bouncing off the grass and ground and onto Sonic as he runs across them. There's also the trademark run and Sonic Advance 2-esque afterimages to take into account, not to mention all the Flickies you'll be freeing as you smash countless Badniks. Interestingly, Sonic Team seems to have altering shadows for Sonic depending on how fast he runs. Notice how his shadow seems to be more detailed when he's climbing ledges compared to when he's running at high speed, in which case it's replaced with a circular shadow. Sonic Team must have done this to keep optimal performance. Speaking of which, the gameplay in the trailer seems to possess a fluid, steady framerate! Of course, this is only a YouTube trailer, so I can't actually tell that for sure. If, however, the game does run at a solid 60FPS, the game will undoubtedly be a step up from Generations in performance, not to mention cement Wii U's place as a next-gen system.
    -Since it appears we're not fighting any mechanized bosses this time around (due to the distinct lack of a certain mustachioed roboticist), it will be interesting to see how fights with the Deadly Six will be handled.

    Overall, I've got a really good feeling about this game. :)

    Yeah, I wouldn't be too keen on the Wisps coming back either. They were a tolerable gimmick but I didn't want them being a franchise mainstay. There are better ways of administering power-ups.

    Unfortunately, I'm not sure what else that could be in that screenshot. Oh well.

    I kinda don't want Wisps in this game. They weren't terrible in Colours, but they did break the flow of the game and made speedrunning less fun.

    Although it's yet to be seen, just from seeing what this game looks like I feel like they'll be nothing but optional, unlike Colors where while they aren't required the game is barely the same without them.

    As far as the art style is concerned, I will miss what I saw in Generations/Unleashed/Colors, even though the last one wasn't HD. In particular I liked Color's trope combos, such as space casino resort base (Tropical Resort) or launch base zone on azure lake (Planet Wisp) or japan styled water level (Aquarium Park). But it's a unique style, so I'm willing to give it a go.

    You know I had a feeling that this game was going to tie in with Sonic Colors a tad bit... I also think the other two nintendo exclusive games will tie in with this I just have a feeling. I thought the wisps were alright, but I really hope they won't stop the level flow. It sucked when I had to stop and use a wisp to gain access to the next part of the level while playing through colors. >.>

    Well the other exclusive is Mario and Sonic at the Olympics, not sure what the third one is of course.

    Using wisps again only makes sense. It was Sega's first highly rated 3D Sonic game in ages, and the fact that both Colors and Lost World are Nintendo Exclusives makes it make even more sense. Plus if the game is being co produced by Nintendo (not sure, but look at all that Mario Galaxy in there) they probably wanted the Wisps to come back. They are very Mario-y after all, I always thought of Wisps as a hybrid of Mario Powerups and Elemental shields.
     
  20. Sonic X-treme meets Super Mario Galaxy? Very cool.

    The gameplay looks to be rather different, which I think is a good thing, and the plastic X-treme-like graphics is an interesting art style decision.

    I wonder if the 5 alien villains means this game will have more story than Colors and Generations, I'd like to see Sonic get back into some storytelling.

    This, along with Pikmin 3, is giving me some incentive to buying a Wii U now...
