I thought you had to use both of them... I've always just jumped from one to the other, pulled down, rinsed and repeated.

At first I laughed at that but then come to think of it that kinda makes some logical sense.

Anyhoo, great topic, I've been playing these games for 20 years too and never knew about any of these!

Anyone know about the secret route in SBZ 2? I dunno how I figured it out, but when I did, I was stoked :specialed:

Is that the one where you have to reach a specific tube within a certain time?

I found the chemical plant boss shortcut back before the Saturn even came out :I I did a small video of it on youtube a while back and people apparently flipped their shit

I've known pretty much all of these posted thus far, with the exception of two from Aquatic Ruin; the underwater 1up and the platform with the three boxes.
I know there are more that haven't been listed yet, but I don't remember them unless I'm in the middle of actually playing the game lol :P And I've gotten to the point where I always take the same path every time I play, so I don't recall how to trigger some of them (that lowest path in Casino Night? Totally done that before, haven't seen it in over 15 years lol)... There are some unexpected paths and secret bits in Flying Battery and Lava Reef, I remember some air-current segment in Winged Fortress...

Not time. 50 rings or more. You enter the tube and it warps again when you reach the first exit.

Speaking of that shortcut, is it possible to trigger it in the Android version?

I cant seem to trigger it for some reason.

Never mind, tried it again and it still works.

My mind is totally blown by that CPZ boss shortcut, I didn't even know that existed! I'm one of those people that has played Sonic 2 since they could remember and claims to know all of its secrets, yet I didn't know about that one!

Still want a video on how to get those rings in the beginning of act 1 though. :p

I found out about the CPZ Act 2 shortcut BITD using my Sonic 1 & 2 Official Player's Guide:

I bought that guide around 1993 IIRC. When I saw that shortcut it was a lifesaver! A way to bypass the Mega-Mack? Oh hells yes! :)

Interestingly, there are only 47 rings (plus 3 right beside the tube) available if you follow the path without deviations. And it's SBZ Act 2, so God knows how hard it is to access it.

I found that shortcut once pure random, and it was when I played Sonic 2 daily, trying to glitch it and fuck around. I dunno what I did but I remember I looked up and was like "What the hell, there's holes in the wall? And then I thought I needed to get there. Spindashed near the hill, so I could jump and land into the hole.

The Mystic Cave zone lamppost I found too quite fast after started to play Sonic 2 for some times. I like to rub all kinds of walls, like holding the arrow against the wall and jumping, to see, do I find some secret areas. And the lamppost was 1 of them.

But the Labyrinth zone level came to me as a surprise though, but I have no Idea how to get it to work. Some Retro member said "Just left handle. ONLY LEFT HANDLE AND THATS IT?" But some reason I had no idea what he was talking about. I'll try again by now and trying to go left.

Edit: Aah that clickable grey button.

  15. I may be slow but up until 2 days ago, I NEVER knew there was an earthquake sequence with no lava in Hill Top Zone. Getting to that path made me realize SEGA really knew the hell they were doing with the Spindash and its hidden tricks back in the day.

I'm still trying to figure out how to get that 1 up on Oil Ocean (act 2?) on top of that random platform between those green canons.

Edit: Wow, looking at it now, I can't believe I spent all these years and not once have I ever decided to just jump above the first lava pit in Hill Top act 2. I didn't even have to Spindash to get up there lol.
Well, at least I can say I've always thought that hidden checkpoint in Mystic Cave and those three boxes in Aquatic Ruins were somewhat common knowledge so I can somehow balance my selective idiocy behind all of this.

To answer the second question first, NO it doesn't really. It just makes taking the shortcut a TAD bit easier. (Before restoring this, I would always jump over the water pit too early and get hit by the Burrobots and fall into the water... like a fool.)

As to how to fix this, Lemme explain. First things first, credit to Mercury's ReadySonic for pointing this out. Secondly, Grab a disassembly, and SonLVL. (You can do this with SonEd2 also, but my guide will be using SonLVL.) Obviously we are editing SBZ Act 3, so load that level. Search the map for this area, easily identifiable by the water pit and the rings awaiting inside it. Just past it are two smaller pits that you WILL want to enter... they have two lines of rings in the water. Here is a screenshot of the area, pre-fix:

Now compare what you see in SonLVL with the screenshot... anything look different??? What's that block doing there? It is identical to the one found in the aforementioned LZ Act 1 shortcut, as it has the EXACT same function. The reason that this doesn't appear in game is because it has the "Remember Sprite State" flag set. Disable this and Save/Build/Run. You now have said object that I'm willing to bet 90%+ people don't even know about. (Gameplay-wise it doesn't make a huge difference, other than the fact that I like to use it because I suck at that part of the level without it. XD) Here it is in action:

PS: Fuck you Burrobots... OH, and Dear Taxman. PLEASE put this in a revision of Sonic 1 iOS/Android. Thank you.

EDIT - About the CPZ Act 2 deal...
And here I was thinking I was hot shit when I managed to use the Spin Dash on the curvy paths to propel myself up to the moving platforms to bypass the Mega Mack... Astounding, this topic is.

I discovered pretty much all of those secrets when I was little by fooling around in the levels. I like to explore thoroughly when I play Sonic! I've always thought the CNZ path and the monitors in ARZ were comon knowledge, but now it doesn't look like it. The only one that I didn't know exactly HOW to access and had to read about it on the internet is the SBZ2 elevator thing.

By the way, here are a few more things you may not be aware of:
-In CNZ1 (Sonic 3), there's a hidden alcove with a lightning shield and Ring monitors which can only be entered from below. In standalone Sonic 3, Tails can knock down the monitors by flying into their bottoms, but this isn't the case for the full game.
-In CNZ2 (Sonic 3), you can find TWO extra life monitors together, the only instance of this in the Genesis games. It's shortly after the end of the water section. In the same level, there's a special stage Ring near the end only Knuckles can reach, by gliding up the first slope into Sonic's final strecht.
-In HCZ2 (Sonic 3), you can find an Eggman monitor and an invincibility one on a couple of water pits with spikes at the bottom. You normally skip them across the water. In the same level, there's a trail of 4 Ring monitors and a water shield (close to one of the aforementioned pits) an an underwater Ring monitor worth 20 Rings (actually two overlapped monitors)!
-Some Tails-only secrets: a monitor alcove in HPZ and a shortcut path in DEZ1 (most of you should know these by now).
-A whole path through the early part of MHZ1 which can only be taken properly in the full game.
-Near the beginning of LRZ1, Knuckles can head past the driller machine and sneak into Sonic's path.

Yeah I would take the top path first to grab a few extra rings, then drop down to the lower path. Gets very tricky when you reach the trap door/flamethrower/plasma ball combo area. :argh:

Well, if you're not a hacker (Like me), finding out about that bugged out platform would be nearly impossible, so yeah I'd say most people didn't know about it. :v:

Thanks for sharing though. If it's not in the wiki, it should be.
