SO. All that furor in the Sonic 1 proto Naka comment thread made me want to go back and look inside the proto and final builds of SMC, just for the hell of it. I found this: What is this? Why is it here? I don't know why but I think it's either PS2, or heck, maybe even DC... Expect more, since there's a lot more stuff in here. Also check the archived SMC Proto thread for other stuff we found back in '08 if you're interested...
That actually looks kind of interesting. Looks a bit RPG-ish to me. "Little kid, alligator/dragon thing and a robot jump through the Stargate and have wacky adventures!" There's some potential there.
What the? That's the wierdest Stargate Episode I've ever seen- and I haven't even seen Stargate. Seriously.. looks quite odd. Appears to be Dreamcast due to the styling and graphics- PS2, as well as devs could do better than that with CGI in 2001. A game concept? Three players? Maybe it was a Sonic Heroes concept? Who knows! Looks like Teamwork might have been the theme
Hmm, it was copyrighted to CRI Middleware, which helped SEGA with AV-related things for their Gamecube titles. I don't think Sega had any involvement in it. The filename implies that it's some kind of video output test.
Considerin' the copyright claim by CRI, I am guessing this is some sorta advertisizng thing to show them "hey, guys, look how awesome the quality of our video compression is" or some shit like that. A benchmark, if you will, for advertising-examples, kinda like how sometimes, some video editing software comes with a fake family video of one of the developers. : v
I'm pretty sure there's audio that goes with this. So uh. If anyone knows of a game that emulates well in dolphin that uses sofdec... Maybe we could swap and see how it goes? Also, other sofdec videos include one of a San Francisco trolley conductor turning his trolley and some sort of looping wave effect.
I like how this is way more interesting than everything Sonic-related since the release of the Sonic Mega Collection. Would like to know more and/or play.
So more interesting stuff... US/EU was supposed to get Streets of Rage 1/2/3 and Bonanza Bros. in Sonic Gems Collection. I wonder why that never happened... :P Code (Text): H I s t o r y o f " B O N A N Z A B R O S . " R e l e a s e d o n M a y 1 7 , 1 9 9 1 . W e ' r e B o n a n z a B r o t h e r s ! If I remember correctly that video is in the CRI video development package as an example video. It was most likely just there while Sega tested video playback functions. I can't remember that one specifically, but I do remember a video of a trolley in San Fransisco in the CRI video example folder of the Dreamcast devkit.
So I guess all this sonic 1 proto talk has made sonic mega & gems collection a worth while thing to research. cool, I never see it talked about its about time it got some attention.
So uh. Someone want to explain why the Sonic 1, 2, 3, S&K, MBM, Spinball, and 3D Blast roms are in Gems?...
