Many hacks run well enough on actual hardware to warrant their existence as repro's. So why not create cover art for them? And FYI, for Sonic 1 Megamix, consider the possibility of a CD+Cart single, to where it's one case with both the last Genny version and the most recent SCD version. In this case, it should combine the red-stripe and the blue-stripe of the later Genny and Sega CD, respectively. Though the Genny-only version should use the original black grid design. In fact, here's my thoughs for the American versions: * Black grid: Character X in Sonic 1, S1 Megamix (Genny-only release), hacks with audio and/or layout and/or visual and/or basic engine mods * Red-stripe: S1/S2 hacks with advanced engine mods, post-S2 games (from S3 and forward) Non-American version will use whatever standard used in their country.
Why create cover art? There have been fan covers of a few hacks such as Sonic Megamix, but the game isn't being released to retail anyway (aside from the Russian pirate copies). If you were to dedicate a flash cart to a hack, then the usage of cover art would be more plausible. If you want to do such a thing, there's templates of cover cases around.
I fully endorse this, you know this can get more non-tech members involved in the hacks, say someone makes a hack but doesn't have time to do box art for it, we could have one of the non-tech members who are good with graphic design do the box art. Does anyone have templates? If not, I could probably make some up when I get out of work
I'm kind of inbetween regarding this. I like the idea because I like completion and it is probably the graphic designer in me that likes this however I do see it as a slightly pointless process. So this isn't a thumbs up from me but it isn't a thumbs down either.
It's a pointless process if you're just doing it for a hack that you're messing around with like putting X character in Y game, but even then, it's not a bad idea if you wanna add some pizazz to your hack, or like I said, have it be a community involvement thing and get someone else to do it.
Megamix had an official cover art in the works at one point. It's gone now. I can assure you that it was amazing. Not everyone wants to however. It's extra work for something that won't be used so time would be better off spent on other things.
The time would be better spent on porting music for hacks that doesn't suck tramps balls. Having said that, as a child I was a sucker for consistency and I HATED that Sonic looked so different on the box art for S1-3. I am contemplating redoing 2 and 3 in japanese classic style sometime soon.
Funnily enough, this is something I was working on. Unfinished, and the version I have on here is actually 6x the size, vector'd (apart from the Sonic) EDIT: For shits and giggles, have the full sized version too.
Gone as in "hard drive wiped it out" or gone as in "the team didn't like it so we're not gonna use it".
So repro carts look nicer on the shelf. Otherwise, they're just in generic throwaway clamshells you swiped from old games.
This. If it's available somewhere, I want to see it. Simply assuring me that it was amazing is not sufficient; I'm gonna need proof.
Just wondering, is there emulator frontends for Genesis emulators that can use covers / screenshots from jpgs?
we've a more official Mega Drive logo hosted at Sega Retro obviously it's not a vector (and wll need tweaking for use) but it might give better results

I'm all about this idea. Thing is, it's a way for fans of a hack to make something heralding what they like. I keep considering making a Megamix one, but I'm just so lazy.
