How would you redesign Sonic the Hedgehog?

I remember seeing a lot of people went on how this version of Sonic is a whole better than the current version on FurAffinity (and even say this is the only time they liked a picture of Sonic). I'll leave that to you on what you think. To me, it's good, but not exactly "Sonic" to me. The artist's name is Faint, by the way.

 

Riiiiight... Because obviously all the smut that Sonic spawns is the fault of furries.

Knuckles wore a hat in the (original) anime and Tails would put on a pilot's helmet. I think Tails would be cute with goggles on his head or a pair of overalls. Clothes on Sonic characters doesn't bother me, but it's hard to picture some clothes looking good on them after being so used to seeing everyone go nude.

 

So. Giving him anime proportions and facial shapes, DBZ hair, ghetto clothes, and a teen-angst scowl makes Sonic better?

Some say it's the best fan art picture of Sonic, best design of Sonic, wants to see this version in game, the only time they liked Sonic, and...well, I could go on.

 

Please no.

Not to burst a major bubble or anything, but that is nothing close to how most fans would want Sonic to look. I know I don't speak for everyone, but come on, can you really condone that? The clean, simple, cool design would be completely removed for this angsty, stereotypical-anime-grunge look that doesn't fit how a Sonic game should look, play or feel at all.

If, by some wicked, cruel barb of fate this ever ended up becoming the actual design, I would give up on the franchise outright. No questions asked.

Really, even I'm confused on why they say that Sonic is better. It almost looks like Sonic pulled a Shadow or something if you ask me. Now, if this character was just a typical blue anthropomorphic hedgehog, then sure...it's cool, but Sonic...why? The picture isn't bad, really. The artwork is well done, but the design change is a bit too much. What's so great about it? It hardly even look like Sonic anymore.

Oh, and just saying this because no one here mentioned it, but... + - Blue eyes   . That is all.

^^Pretty much my entire thoughts on that design.

May I blame it on the obviously shonen style that Sega has tried to enforce on Sonic the past decade.. but for some reason there is one too many people nowadays wanting Sonic characters to have near human proportions, clothes, lots of spikes that shape more like hair, and have anime eyes. I mean the Uewaka style was bad enough; do they really think making it even more anime-ish would be an improvement?

It's best to stick with the western cartoony style Sonic we've had all through S1-3K and Unleashed-Colors.

 

That picture is bad and the artist should feel bad.

I think someone mentioned this earlier, but I like the Sonic Riders design motifs. The shoes, gloves, and especially the goggles. I mean, this is just me, but if I was a super-fast runner with eyes that took up most of my face, I'd wear Goggles. Imagine all the wind blasting against your eyes, and all those bugs splatting on your eyes like it was a windshield.

EDIT: Wouldn't really call the Uekawa art-style "anime" style.

On that note, I wouldn't mind another game with Sonic Battle's art style.

 

I don't think the picture's that bad, actually. You people are exaggerating things, as usual.

I do, however, think the picture is inherently not Sonic. Does that automatically make the picture bad? No, of its own merits it's an okay drawing. Maybe in some sort of original universe, a character looking like that could work. It just isn't Sonic, though.

 

Also, notice that most of the commenters aren't Sonic fans.

Yeah, I don't know what you guys are sperging about; that picture is pretty goddamn cool in its own right. As a legitimate redesign to be put in the games, it's terrible, but it's pretty cool on its own. Jesus fuck, you people.

 

Took the words out of my fucking mouth. Sonic is suppost to be a cartoon character (or a VG character posing as one), not some fursona of some sort.

 

What? A Sonic Fan can't be a furry too (and vice versa)? That doesn't really make sense.
Really, the picture is great in terms of how it's made and stuff, but it being Sonic it doesn't do.

 

It's the art quality in particular we're spergin' about.

If furries weren't allowed to be Sonic fans, Sonic would have lost over half his fanbase.

But in all seriousness, it's easy to assume those furries in particular weren't Sonic fans. I mean, that was pretty much ONE Sonic picture in a sea of muscly furry dudes and porn commissions.

 

As a stand-alone picture, it's really good. I like the pose, the coloring, and especially the face and facial expression.

As a Sonic picture, though... well, yeah. If Sonic started looking like that, I'd shoot whoever thought it was a good idea.

 

If that was just some random fursona character rather than Sonic, it'd be fine. The fact that it's supposed to be Sonic is what ruins it.
Sonic should never look like that.

I like the picture but definitely not as a Sonic persona, his aura of attitude isn't right, Sonic has a carefree attitude and not some pissed off hatred for the world. But again, in general I do like the picture.
