That tree is decidedly un-Sonic-y. Plants in the classic Sonic games are very geometrically perfect, very straight and symmetrical. I'd probably try making the trunk a lot simpler, straighter and more stylized. Also needs a smaller variant to alternate with.

The grass's drop shadow could use being a bit darker, too.

It's quite good, but perhaps not very Sonic-esque as Neo said. (Also, there are quite a few double-sized pixels left. :P)

Haha holy shit this is back.

Bridge Zone is looking extremely pretty, but like Neo said, the tree just doesn't seem very Sonic-y to me (and I also echo what he said with the grass's drop shadow). Other than that it's fantastic.

Personally, I love that tree, it'd be a shame to see it go.

Whow, go? You're kidding right? Do you know how difficult it is to create an awesome tree like that!? It just needs adjusting in my opinion, maybe a slight change in perspective maybe, here's a slight improvement attempt:

(Could do with a bit of darkening at the bottom, but I just... can't be botherd)

Do NOT let this tree go to waste! There's always a way...

    Hell yeah.

...but the (MarkyJester's edited) tree is too soft now in my opinion. I like Stephen's version - looks like something out of Sonic CD background (which uses upscaled art all over the place), and personally the only things I'd play around with further are the trunk and the general outline of the upper part. Trunk needs vertical flat surfaces and lines; real trunks have lots of those. Outline could use some softening.

Also - if you keep the upscaled parts in the middle of the tree and downscale when you're nearer the edges, it should produce a cheap, geometric illusion of depth, making it look more Sonic-y.

MUCH better simply due to the evened trunk, but the leaves still don't do it for me.

Wonder if simplifying it into a perfect 'tear drop' shape would make it work. Keep the bushy texturing perhaps but make more geometrical and abstract akin to the early level designs. Sorta like Hill Top's trees, resemble real fur trees but with a basic geometrical proportioning and style.

Well, if you're going to do that, why not go the whole way and edit the palettes too.

Why don't you include all trees somehow (maybe except for the first one)?

I really hope this isn't the tree that makes it into the hack. It looks like someone whose only experience in the world consisted of living in a sterilised plastic environment decided to make a tree, complete with gradient abuse on the trunk.

I agree about the tree trunk comment, especially where <stephen's awesome work> doesn't match <original pixels>. We can't lose focus of the project here guyz!

    Also, original tree ftw =P

I've decided to go with Markey's alteration on the tree, as that is how I was hoping to have it looking, I was just having a bit of a hard time with it. As the art for Bridge is pretty much finalised now, I have started work on Jungle Zone. The screenshot below has no background yet, although I have sketched out some concept art, I have just been focusing on the foreground art.

The flowers are still very much WIP, I still need to add detail to them and such.

That ground is gorgeous. Did you make that from scratch?

    Great stuff as always!

Edit: Deleted? Ah yeah it works again.
