I agree, but I guess one thing they could go for is some sort of time attack. The other day I could say I spent about an hour in Sonic 3's competition mode, just trimming seconds to mere milliseconds off of my Azure Lake time. Surely with all these alternate paths we keep hearing about, a time attack or something of that nature certainly wouldn't be a bad idea. It would give players the chance to see what combination of (or lack thereof if you don't like the) wisps combined with what paths would give you the best time.
Heh, this game is taking some serious cues from Unleashed. Do you really belive they would miss a Time Attack mode of some sort? Also... AHHHH!!!! RED EYES!!! DO NOT WANT!!!!

Something interesting I noticed in this footage: The end of the level is marked with a Goal Ring instead of a Wisp's Container. What does this means? Also, what's the correct spelling: Wisp or Whisp?
Possibly when you've already played a zone in story mode, and your replaying it, sort of how you get a grey star once you obtain a gold one in Mario series. Or, you don't get a capsule in every act.
I think it has more to do with the fact that Whisps are already Badniks. (Aquatic Ruin Zone bugs for the uninformed) Unless that's vaguely what you were talking about.
For fun, this is a Whisp. Yeah, I've been wondering about the Goal Ring too. SM2 ended with one as well, and people who played it said that it actually looked like the level extended well beyond it. Perhaps some levels wer ejust shortened for the demos?
I don't know if this was posted yet but: Seriously that background looks awesome! Also I only noticed now: Sonic bounces on fucking jelly! That's awesome :D (Most of you must have noticed anyway, I only thought: Jesus that are the weirdest bumpers I've ever seen XD).
The BG may look really nice but it's going to suffer in the same way that Rush Adventure (and Rush to a lesser extent) did- it's just one flat plane and the foreground looks awful.
