The zones? Well, I don't really care about the "ruins cliche zones"...but, what about Casino Night or Spring yard? Who lives there? Like, are they furries? Humans? The old sonic team staff? Do they use springs because they don't have elevators?

This is why it doesn't make sense when you bring humans into the equation.

You can say that the world of Sonic naturally progressed with loops, twisting bridges, amazing slopes, etc.
You can say that ancient civilizations built the ruins like levels with the loops and stuff, and assume that the civilization was made of animals, ancestors of the little guys you save from destroying robots.
You can say that Robotnik built the mechnical base like levels, or if they already existed, modified them with extra traps to get on Sonic's nerves.

But now, you're trying to tell me that stages like Speed Highway, Radical Highway, Metal Harbor, and Westopolis were logically built with loops in the road by humans? That's what I don't get.

I wouldn't give it too much thought. I doubt anyone at Sega does.

B-but Casino Night did have elevators.

    Over Nine Thou- *shot*

I always thought that different ancient civilizations were responsible for the games' different ruins, and that most of the technological/industrial zones were made by humans, yet taken over by Robotnik and his robots.

pretty sure the instruction manual tells you everything you need to know. outside of that, you're just making shit up for your own weirdo fantasies about a fictional world.

That's a good point, and it's why I didn't count Oil Ocean in the list. The reason why I did list Chemical Plant, though, is that it shares elements from Death Egg. If Robotnik built the parts that comprise the Death Egg, it's reasonable to assume he's responsible for Chemical Plant, too.

It's called imagination. It's kind of, you know, the point of interacting with fiction.

Or maybe Sonic Team got lazy and stopped making new blocks at a certain point. :specialed:

That kind of goes without saying. But when people make topics like this, they usually want discussion about the questions in the context of the game universe.

For example: if someone asked, 'who's Sonic's father supposed to be?', Naoto Ohshima wouldn't be a fair answer (especially because that would make him and Robotnik brothers...)

Sorry, I don't mean to snap, but it gets tiring after awhile. We know they're games.

I go with my theory of G.U.N being present on the islands and named the areas with simple names with Zone on the end for the purpose of some islands they could easily navigate if they were invaded. How confused would you be if you had to figure out which damn hill was the Green Hill Zone so you could have your army attack the G.U.N members gathering there, or if the ruins near Green Hill Zone were the Labyrinth Zone due to it's maze-like structure.

...Except for Angel Island...I think that was Sonic making it up as he went along, thinking the word Zone was common on the end of different areas (Come on, do you think Humans and animals would share the same language before meeting? There's gonna be some confusion as they learn english, which also fits the name Mobius into the equation, being the name the animals gave it before humans taught them English, but it stuck...damn lack of canon information).

On my butt in front of the computer. Where else?
I'm working on working up the willpower to work on learning how to make my own Sonic fangames. Not quite there yet.
I go with my theory that "Zone" is just a gameplay term and that none of the characters would actually refer to locations as "zones."

And if they did in Chronicles that'll just be one more reason to not like the game.

Chronicles was kinda schizo about it. On the one hand they had Green Hill Zone, but on the other hand they had Central City and Metropolis, all distinctly lacking the z-suffix.

So yeah, I don't think "Zone" really means anything to anyone even in-universe. It'd be like saying Seattle "city", in that it's technically accurate but wholly unnecessary.

I always thought of Spring Yard as more a construction site than anything else. Perhaps Spring Stadium from Sonic 3D fits the bill for redundant springyness better... and in that case I thought it could be one of Robotnik's labs for doing crash-tests and/or experiments on inertia and momentum. Same applies to the Casino levels that Robotnik's built... they're not actually public casinos, but rather giant probability labs that he's decorated a little flamboyantly.

I always thought Robotnik made the zones. He would quickly sketch out a map of the zone on a fancy tablet using three dimensional structures. It would also explain the sometimes silly gimmicks in place in some zones. After that, he would use his technological prowess to create this artificial turf which would then go on top of the ground, so the zone is raised an elevation at first, until he rips out the real dirt and grime and puts his zone in place. That's how some of the planet looks entirely natural and other parts look very geometrical and surreal. Also, I bet Sonic hates the zones for the sheer fact that Robotnik had to rip up real land to put fake land in.

The chaos emeralds affecting the land is also a really neat idea, Mercury. Since they're found in different places in each game, it would explain the creation of new zones in a more natural way.

  14. I think the signpost is supposed to signify who owns the surrounding territory; Sonic is effectively attacking the enemy's control points to gain ownership of the Zone back. This gives the signpost, with its flat nature, its alternate name: + - a Zoning Board   .

Who made the Zones you say???

The Almighty Debug. To summon, simply follow these steps:

    -Power On Sonic 1
-At The Title Screen: Up, Down, Left, Right. Hear a chime? Then...
    -Reset
-At Title Screen: Up, C, Down, C, Left, C, Right C. Hear a chime? Then...
    -A+Start
    -Wow, Level Select!
-Select a Level by pressing A+Start.
    -Oh shit!
-Press B to change into a Sprite! A to Choose Sprite. C to Place Sprite.
-Wipe sweat from forehead from being amazed at the Debug.

The creative power of the Almighty Debug is now in your hands....use it wisely.

OK....that's my sarcastic post for the night.... :v:

Depending on which country you are, either State Zone or Federal Zone are responsible for Zoning Regulations.

Ok, that was the worst pun ever. My apologies.

My friends, I have uncovered the truth. It wasn't debug or Robotnik. It was not an earthly power at all.

It was the dread lord Cthulu.

You may now bow to your new master.
