Shadow had some nice levels that were ruined by the swearing, the unnecessary vehicles (why does he need a hovercraft when he has hoverskates??), and of course the weaponry and the generally sorta-broken gameplay. However I said some levels, not all of them. Some were too gritty for their own good, which sadly ended up being over half the stages. :v: Sky Troops and the circus stages were pretty cool though. But really all of them were neat in the exploration area. They all had multiple routes to take and many different directions to go and all that nice stuff.

Nextgen had an awesome Eggman with even cooler machinery. Plus the music was pretty epic and so were the levels in general (ALL of them were designed well for platforming, speed and exploration, and they all looked cool).. except that the gameplay ruined the experience so bad that they were depressingly unenjoyable. Also to note I am somewhat fond of the in-game models for everybody (except Amy, Rouge, the NPCs and Elise for obvious reasons); except that when any of these models were put in cutscenes they did them all wrong by putting their mouths as flaps, made them move like lifeless puppets and gave them little to no expressions; which is something you definitely can't say about the animations to the characters when playing as them (being all lively and bouncy and whatnot). But really, if Sega just could've fixed those problems with the cutscenes, removed Elise and such melodrama altogether (replace with Blaze and cartoonier elements, eh?), and rebuild the gameplay to actually work like a bugfixed SA1 then Nextgen could've been something really great.

Shadow: I really enjoyed the game itself, just felt the story was very unusual for Sonic games...I personally felt that the gun mechanic was not really implemented too well and although occaisionally enjoyable to blast enemies with weapons, it was usually un-necessary, and at times when it was, it seemed to slow the game down a lot. Seemed to be hard to actually stop Shadow from just flying into pits and dying occaisionally, which irritated me. The multiple endings thing was cool, though I'm not sure if I unlocked them all, as it got repetitive playing through it again and again. Also, collecting 10 keys in first level, for a shitty vehicle that ran slower than the already available ones, did not impress. Vehicle system didn't seem much use at all actually, since running was faster. Though running over enemies was a laugh at times.

Overall a pretty good game. Black Knight was better at the whole weapons thing though.

Sonic '06: I honestly didn't see where a lot of the hate for this game came from. Did think Sonic's high speed sections were ridiculously difficult to control...which wasn't cool. There was some bugginess in the controls causing occaisional randon death, and there were a few glitches, but I really didn't see the "Broken" controls people spoke about, apart from the high speed sections. The game offered variety and I enjoyed playing through each of the storys. Silver's gameplay was refreshing and really enjoyed playing using his abilities, for what was a totally new way of playing a Sonic game. Sonic offered the traditional gameplay, which was great. Shadow was good, the vehicles were better than in his own self titled game, but still felt clunky at times. I loved the story. One complaint though...Sonic's death scene was nowhere near as dramatic as Shadow's supposed death scene in SA2, or even Blaze's in Silver's story...or Knuckles' near death in Sonic 3 & Knuckles...Yeah basically his death cutscene lacked much substance. The whole, time erasing itself so none of it ever happened thing, was a bit like the, it was all a dream scenario, so it felt like an overused and tired way of ending a story...again anti-climatic.

Overall, really enjoyed this game, felt like quite a grandoise game in every respect, if the bugs had been ironed out, I feel people may have not really complained. The visuals were amazing (Robotnik never looked cooler). Loed the music too...

Sonic's normal control is also pretty bad, which is weird, since his normal running speed is actually pretty slow.

Maybe I should link you to NTom64's playthroughs... who incidentally is a Trial Member here, last I checked...

This is the first part of his first commentary, with Fastest Thing Alive co-commentating,

and this is the first part of his in-progress, on-hiatus second commentary, with TheHelldragon as wingman.

Watching that may give you a deeper understanding of why people dislike the game.

In their defense, the enemies are hardly effective and can generally be avoided without even so much as paying the mildest bit of attention to them. It really comes down to identifying your targets and shooting them.

As for the formula, it was pretty standard:

Aligned Score - Opposing Score + Time Bonus

Also, the Aliens are bloodthirsty retards, but I think the GUN Soldiers and the Pawns would only deliberately attack you if you had more points for the opposing team in most cases. I don't know for sure, it might just seem that way in retrospect... but I'm pretty sure at some point in the game I was able to just camp out next to some GUN soldiers and watch them kill things.

Learning to beat the levels the first time can be pretty frustrating yeah. The only way to really get any enjoyment out of the game is when trying to get the higher ranks after you've already figured it out. And believe me, there is little more frustrating than some of the collectathon missions.

Screw what everyone says about the artificial chaos killing mission, the bomb sucking one was the worst by far.

Really though, the game is at its best when you are playing the unlockable hard mode. It dispenses with pretty much all of the random collecting and instead focuses on getting from point A to point B with obstacles that'll make you scream in agony as you get taken out again and again and again. It also trashes your reliance continues... though you can use a small exploit to get around that since it lets you save your progress and doesn't bother to trash the saves (in other words, you are pretty much encouraged to save and quit after every stage)

Yeah, it may have been my imagination, but it seemed like the GUN soldiers were programmed to only go after you if there were no aliens around at all. The robots and aliens, though, would go after you most of the time, and only each other when you weren't around.

Bomb sucking...? You mean one of the ones in Central City, or the one where you had to detonate bombs in cyberspace? The cyberspace bomb one wasn't much trouble for me, but I remember that at least one of the ones in Central City was really, really annoying.

And all I'm saying is, "Here's something that might help you understand why other people don't feel that way and provide a few laughs along the way."

Nothing more, nothing less. I don't care who likes or doesn't like what as long as they don't try to shove it up my nose.

Central City. With the vacuum cleaner. Hence sucking and not just... sliding through or whatever it was exactly with that mission.

Alright. I just completely forgot how you went and got rid of the bombs in Central City. I only remembered that it was really annoying.

    Never said you were. :)

There are people who would, though--"BAH THAT GAME WAS FUCKING TERRIBLE HOW CAN YOU LIKE THAT" or "NO THAT GAME WAS AWESOME STOP HATIN' WHY CAN'T YOU FEEL THE SUNSHINE YOU SUCK YOU BLOW PISS OFF GRRRAAAAAAAAHHHHH...!"

...Pisses me off. And because of that, people always get defensive or tell me to drop it when I try to start a conversation about the merits of a game or otherwise try to show/tell people why other people feel differently about a game than that specific person does.

Gets annoying pretty fast, really. I just like a little bit of sporting debate, but when they bring up a point and I throw in a counterpoint, people tend to look at me like a drew a gun on 'em.

I haven't touched Shadow except for the first level, so I'm not gonna say anything there.

For '06, I know I might end up causing 20 pages of rage by saying this, but '06 wasn't all that bad. Besides the loading times, the graphics were pretty good for a Sonic game, though the physics and speed Sonic goes at is...strange.
Examples of bad physics (this later became a joke between a friend of mine, "SCREW GRAVITY, I'm SONIC THE HEDGEHOG!"):
YouTube - Sonic Goes For A Walk
YouTube - Silver throws Sonic in to space LOL -Sonic 06
I liked the music, despite its overuse of the Amen Break.
    Events and quote-wise:
    - Sonic gets impaled by a badass version of Shadow
    - Sonic 06 wiped itself from existence (Someone at Sega must have thought that the game was too horrible and decide that it should've never happened. :v: )
    - Most glitches in the game
    - Silver getting kicked in the back of the head :v:
    - "I'm going up the middle!"
    - Mach Speed areas needs some work, but it was a good try.

I thought the music was a strong factor of both games... And multiplayer. Shadow's multiplayer was quite boring though, especially if the other guy just ran away (given that both players move at the same speed).

'06 though? Now THAT was a lot of fun! Using Silver to throw your rival through a wall was a highlight for me! Although, that does just go to show how glitchy the game was... And that's not including how much you could cheat with Sonic! I did that a lot... Using the purple gem to shrink Sonic and jump over in-game boundries was brilliant!

...Come to think of it, Shadow the Hedgehog played fairly well, despite the homing attack being set to suicide. The guns (while not a great addition) certainly did work, and the Chaos Control moves were nice. Enemy AI was terrible though... I mean, G.U.N. shooting you on sight? I thought they were supposed to be on your side to begin with!

  15. I actually enjoyed both games, aside from Shadow's use of weapons, and Sonic '06's loading screen. The only huge problems I had with Shadow were the character models (I really dislike the SH models) and the weapons. Other than that, it was a nice game. My main problem with Sonic '06 was the physics. Sonic never seemed to be running fast at all, except in Mach Speed areas, and when you jumped, he seemed to fall very slowly. I still liked both games, though. Shadow roundhouse kicking Silver in the back of the head was amazing. Oh, and Shadow killing Eggman in like.. three different endings was funny to me. I don't know why. Maybe it was his scream.

I had my fun times with Shadow. The second level on the neutral story (the ruins area) was a ton of fun; the guns were never quintessential to my play-throughs, but they were fun diversions.

Sonic '06, though, I had some trouble finding something I liked. Some of the Silver levels were pretty fun. As for Sonic levels, I did enjoy Kingdom Valley. Had the physics in the game been a bit better, that level would have absolutely owned. Still, I liked what they were trying to do in Sonic '06, they just didn't develop the ideas fully.

    Shadow the Hedgehog:

Shadow was the first Sonic game I didn't rush out and buy due to my dislike of the character. I actually bought it about 2 weeks later, because I wanted to advanced the story in the series. At the time I wasn't really knowledgeable in finding leaks and spoilers, so buying the game was the only way to find out for me. My first problem is actually my biggest complaint in the current Sonic franchise. The voices. Yes, I am one of them there "Voice fags". Its just something that matters oh so much to me. The cast from 4Kids brought their ugly heads into the game and I was pretty steamed because I was just starting to love the previous cast. That aside, I couldn't help but find the game interesting. The gunplay wasn't great, but I did like the branching paths. I don't believe it would be good if Sonic was involved, but for a pretty shallow character it made Shadow seem to have some depth. The swearing was so bad it was funny. DAMN this, and HELL that. The music was okay, but the only memorable one was the casino zone. After dieing countless times by unfair means, I tossed the game out the window. It is currently on my neighbors roof =)

    Sonic 06:

Oh boy. This was the biggest disappointment in the series for me, but a few tweaks it could have been better than Sonic Adventure. Firstly, I hyped this thing like a fat girl hypes Twilight. Hell, I even bought a new TV on the way home from Gamestop just for the occasion (Funny thing is the TV sucked too =P). The gameplay was awful, the unfair deaths, long LONG loading times, and worst of all for me the Story. I admit when not going through some long drawn out cutscene ending in all of the characters running offscreen, the game was very playable when it worked. To this day, I believe Sonic 06 has the best level design since Sonic Adventure. It was very well put together, and I sometimes wish I didn't sell the game so I could replay some of them. Had the engine actually worked, voices removed, no story (just zone to zone plz), and remove the damn mach speed B.S, I believe 06 would have been the best Sonic since SA2. Sonic also needs to stop growing so tall. :specialed:

    Also, wtf:

  18. That last screenie looks like a mockup, those robots are so damn huge.

Sonic 06....let me just sum it up

    What I liked:

The zones, most of them are beautifully rendered. The reuse of the whale chase with a twist was really something great, the new concepts, the crystals, as far as 'new sonic' goes, this had a slew of new ideas. Crisis city was damned awesome. Kingdom Valley, just the entire Sonic Adventure kind of feel to it where you get to explore and do missions before you go onto the next stage, it was very refreshing. Free to roam! I pretty much liked it all. The return of the Egg Carrier, Super Sonic and Metal Sonic, Harder Missions were all meant to be originally playable....

    What I didn't like:

The engine, the bugs and the fact that it was all rushed, quite a shame too, had this game been less buggy I think it would have made an amazing title. Had it not been rushed, it would have also fixed my other problem Frequency of loading for town missions. Hi <load> here's what you have to do <load> you do it <load> thanks! <load> success <load>. These are really my only complaints about this game.

    What I don't care about:

Sonic and Elise kissed baww!!! Seriously no one cares. Stop bitching about this.

I really like the general design choices of 2006... I mean, not the level design, but for example...Character designs were fucking great, eggman was one of my favourites, I'd be fucking afraid of him in that style, he was like "Im gonna KILL you, biatch!"

Also, the enemies, CGI cutscenes, everything was so likely real and epic. It reminds me of Final Fantasy somehow too.

The music was also great, the main theme is just as epic as the designs. Its a shame that the engine wasnt that good. About gameplay, I cant tell much since I never played, I have seen people playing, but it didnt feel that bad.

Sonic '06 is fun to play with friends if you feel like laughing at how awful it is, but beyond that there's absolutely no reason to play it, it's a disgrace. Oh, the opening cutscene for Sonic was pretty cool too, but that's pretty irrelevent since Unleashed had the best opening in the series. Shadow the Hedgehog had some decent merits to it though, actually. Some levels, such as Westopolis and Glyphic Canyon, were pretty fun to play. I liked a couple of missions too, but beyond that it was a pretty mediocre game that happened to have a lot of replay value to it.
