    Doing anything at all
So, people have repeatedly said that, among other things, the Sonic 4 jingle is trash. We don't know who did it, but if the various comments people have made are true, then they're either trolling us, working at a low standard, or just not that good. So, I figured "Why not make a thread where we can all think of random composers we like?" and wrote this up.

Personally, I can think of three people at the moment.

First off, Yuzo Koshiro. It seems he's mostly known for composing the music for Streets of Rage series, and I suppose at least a few people here would know he did the rearrangements and other tracks for the Game Gear/Sega Master System version of Sonic 1, and probably Revenge of Shinobi, too. So, yeah.

Secondly, Manabu Namiki. He did the music for a heap of shooting games... and most recently, the ReBirth series of games (Along with Fantasy Zone II DX). So, yeah!

Finally, because I know everyone else is going to say it, Naofumi Hataya. No explanation should be needed.

So... yeah! If you were in control, who would you get?

Naofumi Hataya for starters, I love the EUR/JAP Sonic CD OST, and he's just amazing. Second, I would have to go with Yuzo Koshiro, because I loved his version of Labyrinth Zone in Sonic 1 8-bit. (Well duh.) I also really like the music he composed for SOR. And lastly, Jun Senoue (sp?) because he did an amazing job with Sonic 3D for the Genesis/Megadrive and Sonic Adventure's OST.

My heart would stop for a moment if Koshiro-san was gonna do Sonic 4's music.

But I would really want Hataya to bring his Sonic CD style music to the game too.

I will NOT BUY THIS GAME if Jun Senoue has any involvement in the soundtrack. In fact, if Sega is reading this, give the composers absolute creative freedom, or die.

    So one of the following:

I will not hesitate to buy this game if the music is by BOTH Junko Shiratsu and Mariko Nanba. I really really REALLY want to hear another Chaotix.

I will buy this game if the music is by Naofumi Hataya. The old Sonic CD style needs a revival, and Hideki Naganuma seemed to be the only one capable of doing it. Put them both together!

If Yuzo Koshiro wants to do it, promise he'll do it in the same style as Sonic 1 SMS. That soundtrack >> any Streets of Rage game.

If you brought back the Sonic 2 SMS guys, I will be happy. I want to hear more Sky High/Scrambled Egg.

If Masato Nakamura decides to take whatever Sega will throw at him, it might not be a true Sonic 4 without him.

Hataya all the way. Sonic CD's Japanese soundtrack was by far the most fitting, iconic, and high quality music to ever be present in a Sonic game that supported streaming PCM audio. There is no other reasonable alternative.

That would be Nagao N. Gee... aka Naofumi Hataya. ;)

    I whole heartily agree.

Naganuma is amazing. I could listen to his music all day with no complains simply because his music is GOD LIKE.

This I will agree with. However if he was not available I say go for the guy who did the Unleashed soundtrack.

Or if they want to go REALLY retro I say get Dreams Come true again lol

Oh come on guys, pitching Hataya purely for the Sonic CD soundtrack undermines all the superior stuff he did later. :P Space Channel 5, NiGHTs, Burning Rangers, Sonic Heroes.

Hideaki Kobayashi would be my pick 2nd pick.

Dude, all those credentials are part of the reason we want him more (NiGHTS' soundtrack alone, made me buy the game and a Saturn). He's someone who makes good shit (not trying to downplay every other Sonic music composer), and we don't hear enough of his style today. Jun Senoue and his style, while I really enjoyed the soundtracks of SA1, SA2, Heroes, his arranged version of Angel Island in SSBB (and, maybe ShTH), is getting really stale, at least IMO. More recently, his shit starts to sound like shitty boy band material you'd hear from some random station on the radio.

The music was the only thing I liked about Sonic Heroes, so he gets my vote simply for making that game slightly less shit. No easy feat.

I don't quite feel so strongly about the music that I'd cut myself off from a game because of a composer... but I will say that I would be rather miffed if it were Hideki Naganuma. Nothing against that style of music, but it isn't anything close to what I'd expect out of an old-style Sonic game.

Hataya for sure, but just for shits and giggles I'm gonna say Damon Albarn. As far as I know, he's never done videogame music, but I could see it being a project of interest to him. I offer up this notion solely for the existence of the Gorillaz B-side '68 State' ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zo0ePuiOoBM ). First time I heard the track I envisioned Sonic speeding down a freeway at night.

    Michael Jackson! :specialed:

One of the things I've always liked about the good Sonic soundtracks was their variety. Though they had a consistent style running through them as a common thread, each track had it's own flavour, as well. Hill Top is a little bit country, Casino Night is jazzy, Wing Fortress is like a military march, Death Egg is operatic, yada yada yada. This always fit well with Sonic's traveling theme - the locations were very disparate, and their themes had to match. Sonic Unleashed revived this tradition, to pretty good effect, I think.

Thus, I think a great way to make the soundtrack would be to get an all-star cast of the Sonic composers from the past. There'd be one guy in charge - Masa, Yuzo, or Naofumi, say - who would do the main themes and bring everything together. But everybody else would get to make a zone theme or two. That way you could bring back obscure favourites like Spencer Nillsen or Richard Jacques.

Since Sonic 4's looking to be a "best-of" trip down memory lane, this approach would work perfectly. There'd be something for everybody to get nostaligic about - it'd be epic.

Jun Senoue butt-rock is awesome, as long as it doesn't take over the entire soundtrack.

When I first saw this topic I was thinking of composers who hadn't done Sonic before. I mean, with Masa, and with the failed attempt to get MJ, Sega was going for established celebs who could lend their names and popularity to Sonic.

Both Masa and MJ are masters of pop, composers of catchy tunes. It's like what Disney tries to do with their films, getting Billy Joel, Elton John, Phil Collins, or Randy Newman - they want tunesmiths of the highest quality. While Naganuma and Nanba are great, I'd like to have another celebrity composer for Sonic, one who knows their pop and can kick him back into the realm of being hummed by family members who don't even play Sonic. (Seriously, does your mom sing tracks from Sonic Rush around the house?)

On that note, though, I can't think of any who would be "hip" enough. Billy Joel or Barry Manilow don't seem like they'd click with Sonic, you know? Maybe Sting, or somebody? (at least he's a bassist)

Both Ghost in the Shell and Cowboy Beebop were handywork, her music's memorable and sways between beautifully serene and epicly inspiring.
Admittedly her style is probably more suited to the "epic" stories of the 3D games as it can really get your heart pumping (something they sorely needed, yet failed at), but I think that talent could be applied to the 2D games also.

Man, I'd freakin' explode if there was even the slightest chance of her being involved :P

Masato Nakamura, the guy responsible for the Sonic 1 and 2 soundtracks.

Naofumi Hataya, the guy responsible for the Sonic CD soundtrack.

Hiroshi Miyauchi, the guy responsible for the OutRun soundtrack.

Richard Jacques, the guy responsible for the OutRun Euro Remixes, Jet Set Radio (+Future) and Sonic 3D Saturn/PC.

Now, if only we could find a way to fuse their minds together to form the ultimate game music composer... Richato Miyataya.

Ignoring past Sonic composers, I'm gonna throw out a wild card and say this guy might do some interesting work. He's really good at making funky, energetic music. It's a little different than traditional Sonic music, but that could work, I think.
