The Arby's forehead is still there.

Am I the only one bugged by that?

Sonic: Like someone said, there's still no shape or depth to the quills, though I prefer the longer ones as well. The expression is a bit dull too, Sonic had a lot of expression just by standing there. I still think his legs are too further apart.
Tails: The mouth and feet look weird and the muzzle gets thiner in the middle when it shouldn't.

    Everything else looks good.

My whole ISP has been banned shamelessly and I still post through proxies. Maybe you can try that? Vtunnel worked last week.

Sonic: I love the longer quills, though they look out of perspective, so we just need to alter them a bit and I think we've got it.
The Shoes too, I love the shoes.

Tails: Make his legs shorter maybe? I dunno, I think it's pretty spot on.

What the hell are you talking about.

  5. About the latest collab picture... Why is it like an oil-painting? I thought you guys were trying to make it look like a 3D model. It also makes it harder to edit. For me =P I'm like the shorter quills better though, as in - you know, I can't remember who did the particular one I'm looking at. it's in a file called nlev.png, and it's the third from the right. It's the first one to go without the Camp Sonic watermark. My favourite.

  6. Wow..... I am glad that many of you really like it! It was as I say a labor of love! Someone mentioned the buckle for the shoe, I tried to keep it on the left foot (right shoe if you look straight at the pic) unfortuantely the way I reangled the foot it just wouldn't work.

I think that someone possibly applied a filter to make it look more oil painting in nature, which for me was great to work with. And of course I added a few asthetic touches of my own. As for the oil painting..... I was trained to paint in oils years ago. Unfortunately due to allergies I cannot paint with them (unless I can find some that are not allergic to me). So I moved onto photoshop.... I had no clue what I was doing, so I encorporated the same methods I was trained in and photoshop has been perfect for me. I am still learning how to handle the program, but I like the oil painting style, it is something that isn't seen much anymore these days.

The shorter quills were charming, however, for some odd reason it did not remind me of the OVA Sonic. It was more like how Konami handled the 3D version of Rocketknight, didn't look right to me. To me anyways.... via the googles of nostalgia this is how I think Sonic should look like.

Also for the art direction for Needlemouse, I hope it is 2.5D using the hedgehog engine and either be cgi models or use cell shading..... or better yet a similar style (oil painting esque) of Valkyria Chronicles....

  7. Oh, I actually agree with you there. You're version looks a lot more like the classic hog, but IMO the shorter spikes are even better. On that topic, I used my favourite version and tried to add perspective to the spikes to help with the 3D model. Here. I don't know if it helps or not because the spikes still look like they are just pointing to the right, but it gives it that western look at little, which ironically I dislike. Might try and add it to the latest version seeing as that is the most loved one it seems.

  8. I see what you mean about the quills, with the darker shading around the back of the head it makes them 2d-ish. When I was working on my version I wanted to add that darker shading but made it subtle. The thing with painting with oils, you can achieve a 3D life like effect (look at Rembrandt "the master of light and dark") His paintings would leap out and look as if someone was just wearing the frame.

Here is a quick edit to show you what I mean.....

The Sonic on the left is the original and my edit is on the right.. I am not really that great at explaining this via text (much better to explain it in person) but I think this image should elaborate what I am trying to explain.

    [IMG] [IMG]

Went ahead and edited the image to something similar to what I did with my edit, but kept it looking cgi-ish as well as keeping the short quills. And the one on the right has longer quills, not as long as my first edit but a compromise (at least due to the render, not as friendly as the last one I did).

Are there any talented 3D modellers here willing to attempt to make this version of Sonic?

  10. This is hilariously awesome.

These are just about perfect. All the body proportions are just right, down to Sonic's quills which are long enough to be a prominent feature, but not long enough that they droop down and look depressingly flaccid. And Tails with his more orangey look is much more appealing than the pale piss-yellow he's been cursed with for most of the newer games.

On a side note: Sonic + Kingdom Hearts = epic fail. The moment another franchise's elements start seeping into Sonic, it immediately becomes a horrible, horrible thing.

I'll most definitely give it a shot thorough attempt, but I've been awful busy with a few things recently (mostly schoolwork, but also helping out with a website, and a "CGI project" for Slingers), so I couldn't promise anything soon. Ultimately, I need a classic looking model for my 3D sonic stuff anyways, since slapping modern sonic into classic-esque environments feels wrong.

Speaking of Knuckles earlier, the little amount of difference from S&K to SA1 in his design surprised me.

That art is from SADX (post SA2), not from SA1.

    (just nitpicking)

It might just be the angle of the image but the longer quills just look way off.

I know you mentioned OVA Sonic as an inpsiration, but not even OVA Sonic had quills like that.

    Doing absolutely nothing
This thread is just making me detest the newer looks more and more. The collaborative Sonic and Blue Emerald's Tails are just wonderful. The classic designs are still charming even today.

SEGA needs to see this thread. The difference in quality and overall character, is staggering. Everyone looks so much more humble and that "ready to go" attitude I've missed for so long. Leaps and bounds better than trying too hard to be edgy and cool with ridiculous postures and such.

    Nothing against the new look.
But of course my inner child needs to see more of the classic look! (and I know I'm not the only one.)
That collaborative Sonic is even more awesome than the last time I saw it (some pages ago), now it really looks like the real thing.

PS: "Eggman" Robotnik is really awesome in that OVA's picture.

  19. The OVA Sonic wasn't quite inspiration, it was more to make Sonic with smaller quills, but to me it doesn't work for this modern model.

The issue also is perspective and how the head is turned, depending on how it is tilted it will show less quills or more. When I finished my first edit (the one that looks like oil-painted) the art design is more closly to the classic Sonic images from years ago... the images from the Sonic the Screensaver collection.

Okay, this is pissing me off.

Are you all so goddamned pretentious that you think SEGA somehow isn't capable of returning to the classic-styled Sonic design? Believe me—they're very capable; resources are not an issue here insomuch as a distinct change in aesthetic design, appeal, and direction. Even if the classic gameplay is returning, you can be sure that the classic design will not. This is a professional corporation; no matter how much you claim sentience or superiority over them, you are not. Every single action they make is a tactical and well thought-out attempt at deviation to appeal to a wider audience, and that includes Sonic's design and even the style of music within the games.

Whether you people like it or not, it's not 1992 anymore. What worked to draw people in then will, for the most part, not draw people in now. The only reason most of you are so convinced it will is because you're blinded by rose-tinted glasses and nostalgia. Even Mario has received distinct changes in style and portrayal since the 90s. Yeah, granted—he's stayed more or less the same throughout that time... but so has Sonic.

So really, what the fuck is the big god damned deal? If the gameplay is good, then it shouldn't fucking matter. Stop spouting the same tired shit and try being realistic for three fucking seconds. I like the classic design better too, but I'm sure as hell not deluding myself.
