Probably not done on purpose, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were.

 

What's more interesting to me is that the planet is apparently 80% landmass, with 98% of that mass being forest. Unless there's one massive ocean on the other side, where is all this life coming from?

 

Under the surface of course. An underground ocean of MUD.

 

Note that we never actually see much native life on Little Planet. Robotnik's robots all contain flowers, and you could assume that the animals that are freed from holo-Metal Sonic are Sonic's friends who tagged along - or perhaps, holograms themselves?

 

Does this happen on other frames?

And the few drops of water it has are coming out of its eyes

 

Anyways, seeing as Little Planet appears over a lake, there could be some sort of transfer of water (vapor) from the lake to the planet. Perhaps it is the missing R2 level "Fog Forest."

This is funny because the ending video contains two other intentional "hidden" faces - Sonic's as the sparkles cover the LP, and Robotnik's in the explosion.

I never noticed the sad planet before...and damn how our minds love to play tricks on us like that.

 

It's in the atmosphere of another planet. Rain from the larger planet should sustain it.

Or they're really deep, but narrow lakes.

That, or we're trying to make sense of Sonic again
