  1. To me, the spikes seem too smooth. Let's not forget that those spikes have been sticking out of the ground for centuries. What would they look like if they were rusted and eroded slightly?

I always took them as spike traps that Robotnik had, y'know, built in each Zone to hinder Sonic's progress. I mean, he's always one step ahead of you, and he's had time to fill all the Zones with his Badniks, too. Besides, who else'd leave lethal 4ft metal spikes just lying around? =P

Having said that, it might be interesting to see how the spikes look with a bit of weathering, though to be honest I'm a fan of the cleaner look they have right now.

Just give the spikes a slightly longer point. Hopefully that will give the illusion of them being sharper.

  4. To be honest I prefer the old one's, the concave look is not for my taste.
Just an idea, maybe thinning out the spikes will create a sharper effect

Chimpo, copy and paste the "Old" in paint, the paste the "New" one over it, you'll see the newer is a bit more curved and the white shine is thinner.

I hate these damn spikes. They both look like crap. Too new, too shiny, needs more graininess.

Guys... this is not Sonic's Gears of War. How much graininess can you add to something that always looked "clean" without making it something different?

ITT: ICEKnight doesn't like new stuff

Seriously, we need to improvise. Spikes are sure not meant to look like fresh, pointy things sticking out of the ground.

ITT: Sonic 2 is not new stuff. =P

Isn't the purpose of this project to make something the original devs would have made, had they had the resources and technology back then? Back then, as in, not now.

They're sharp metal spikes, why would they even need to have a lot of graininess? Just because you can add it, doesn't mean you should. Sonic art is supposed to look clean and smooth.

I just want some nice shiny, pointy, metallic spikes. Currently, I think they're all too fat except Blue's new one. It's a bit thicker, but it doesn't just randomly bulge out in the middle like the others do, and it comes to a nice, sharp point. As for how to shade these things, I think Blue's new one will work just fine. I highly doubt there will be people that play the game and just stop dead in their tracks because some spikes aren't shaded in one of the other two ways that have been proposed in this thread.

    Blue's new one.

As for keeping them shiny and clean, that should vary depending on the area they're in. For example, having them stay clean in Emerald Hill Zone would be fine, but making them seem more weathered and worn with some overgrowth on them would be perfect for a place like Aquatic Ruin Zone. We really should not just use one version of the spikes. The spikes should change, when needed, to fit with the rest of the surroundings. Hell, we could just go and make spikes that aren't even made of metal for some places.

Regular steel spikes in Emerald Hill.
Regular steel spikes in Chemical Plant (They're almost non-existent, so don't bother).
Regular steel spikes in Aquatic Ruin (Same reason as above).
Steel spikes with neon lights in Casino Night.
Blue stalagmites and stalactites in Hill Top.
Steel spikes with decorative vines in Mystic Cave.
Rusted, oil-stained steel spikes in Oil Ocean.
Steel-tipped Arrows in Metropolis (like the arrows that pop out from the floor and the boxes in Metropolis, except not-moving).
And obviously nothing for the rest since they don't appear beyond Metropolis.

Who said something about making Sonic grow a beard and sticking him in a brown environment? Just make the spikes prettier by making em gritty. Not much more than that.

I would like to see something like this.

  19. I approve of this. Differing the spikes could give the levels new life.

Also made one modification as it fit.

  20. This will make it harder for players to identify them as the same obstacle. Not only new players, the ones that already know the original game will probably stop to think "what else did they change besides their appearance?", maybe expecting them to do something different.

Some rust here and there or few vines near the base is not such a big deal and can be a nice touch, but completely changing their appearance and turning them into stalactites or arrows? I don't think this is a good idea.
