This has always interested me, in some way or another. How would you translate something like this into a medium like film without mucking it all up? Avoiding the obvious "don't do it" answer, of course.

It would be, basically, a pantomime - based around the atmospheres and surreal environments of the first game, with particular emphasis placed on that level progression toward the man-made. Tonally, it wouldn't be at all similar to anything at all we've seen - other than the game itself - surreal, stylistic, over-the-top, and dreamlike. There wouldn't be as much emphasis on the comedic as there has been; while it's still there, not nearly as much.

The "Robotnik" character - well, the idea of him as the complete antithesis of Sonic would be elaborated on to the full. While his sense of humor does remain, he'd remain more of an overly "sinister" figure, moreso than a comic foil, with dead eyes behind black (or blue) pince-nez.

Going even farther with this Fantasy Football League, there's really only one director I can see behind the camera, for a character like this - and, that's Dr. George Miller.

    But, what about you?

I'd take the Chaotix Detective Agency and put them in the kind of a deep crime action thriller that isn't parodical but serious involving cases of murder, ransom, mortgage (for the office) and a computer room. Any humor at all directly precedes sudden dangerous situational twists, except for 3 times to break predictability. Cold tint. Directed by Michael Winner. 123 minutes.

Maybe a movie that went into Sonic's origins. Since we've never got a clear spiel from Sega on that one.
I'd like them at least to factor in some of the original American canon.. I actually liked the idea of Sonic originally being brown, then being turned blue by reaching his maximum speed.

  4. Live action version, about a college distance runner Jules and his aeronautics-major friend Miles.

It's the year 2075, and all across the globe, archeological digs are discovering strange fluorescent gems buried beneath the surface; six have been obtained by anonymous funding, but a seventh one has gone up as a prize for the NCAA Men's Cross Country Championship - a competition Jules has managed to reach. His coach and world-renowned Chemistry professor, Dr. Kintobor, is especially excited to see what strange chemical properties the prize holds. Jules fails to win the competition, but Kintobor, jolly as always, reveals that he was the donor for the other six gems - he knew their locations so precisely due to finding a stone tablet on an archeological dig in the Atlantic Ocean. It told an epic about a blue hero, riding on the wind, who saved the ancient world from corruption, as well as detailing the locations of the seven "Great Emeralds".

Kintobor reveals that he has produced a vast machine in his personal laboratory that filters out pollution in the enviornment to such a degree that global warming could be reduced by half within one year of its operation. The only catch is, it requires these ancient Emeralds to work. Confident in using the six he has, he invites Jules and Miles, along with many other respected scientists, to the demonstration. Something goes horribly wrong, the lab almost explodes, and Kintobor is pulsed full of pollution. Driven mad by the shame his failure has created, he formulates a new plan while in the hospital; to take over the world with his robotic inventions. He does so, also shutting down many transport systems, and declares New York his new grand capital: Metropolis. He intends to commandeer the International Space Station as well, so he can form an orbiting weapon to keep his citizens in check. There's just one problem - he needs those Emeralds to power his weapon efficiently, and they were scattered across the continent in the earlier test.

Now, Jules and Miles, who were on vacation in California at the time of the world conquest, must trek on foot back to Kintobor's laboratory and put an end to the mayhem he has created. On their way, they discover the landing sites of the six Emeralds - and with each cleaned Emerald they gain, each gains odd flashbacks of another life, as well as increased agility. It's not long before Kintobor - now taking his old family name, Robotnik, not the one he gave to immigration services - decides to come after the duo himself...

All the while, a resistance has begun in Metropolis to combat Robotnik's forces. This group, led by the energetic young Amy Rosethorn, has begun sabotaging Robotnik's laboratory under the guise of his lab assistants. In the process, they've discovered the secret history of Robotnik; how his family was exiled from Turkmenistan for war crimes of Robotnik's paternal grandfather, and how they moved to America to start anew. Another key member of this is Redd "Knux" Knuckleson, a good friend of Jules' before the takeover. The sabotage enables Jules to shut down Metropolis upon his arrival and cause Robotnik to flee with the seventh Emerald (which he forcefully took from the winner of the NCAA race).

The movie climaxes with an aerial chase scene over the Atlantic Ocean, with Miles piloting a jet along with Jules, Amy, and Knux, chasing after an airborne docking station belonging to Robotnik. Shot down by weapons, the crew lands on what appears to be a deserted island in the Atlantic Ocean - but not before Jules makes a daring leap onto the docking station. With a few repairs, Miles takes back to the skies, leaving Knux and Amy to investigate the island. Miles helps Jules pursue Robotnik to his transport to the ISS, where Jules is almost defeated and shoved into an airlock by Robontik's minions (who hold the station's crew hostage), but suddenly, as Robotnik gloats about the seventh Emarald he has, it flies out in attraction to the other six Jules has. A bright flash, and Jules emerges as the reborn hero, Sonic, still in his Super form from the revival. He effortlessly defeats Robotnik's minions and sets the weapon attached to the ISS flying down to Earth, with Robotnik inside.

On the island, Knux and Amy have discovered a eighth, larger Emerald... as they approach it, it shines brightly, and the whole island lifts up from the Earth! Seconds later, however, the sattelite weapon impacts the island, sending it crashing back to the sea with a deafening roar. Miles meets Jules - now Sonic - in midair, and our story ends...

Based roughly on Sonic 2. If there's a sequel, it will be based on 3 & Knuckles; the trilogy ends with Adventure. Greedy corporate executives try to pass of an adaption of Adventure 2 with new actors as a fourth film, but it bombs so spectacularly that they decide to reboot the franchise and have Knuckles run around and yell, "WHY SO MYSTERIOUS". A direct to video animated prequel tells of the legend of the blue hero - the story of Sonic 1.

And this post is only half-joking.

I'd take the characters from SatAM (excluding Robotnik) and somehow mix it with Sonic CD/OVA (excluding Land of the Sky and Land of Darkness), using character designs similar to 1997 classic Sonic.

    (600th post, yay.)

  6. I would use an old version of the story...

A long time ago, on the planet known as Earth, a scientist known as Dr. Kintobar, is trying to get famous with his inventions. The problem is that no one takes any of his ideas seriously, or sees no value in them.

He decides to go into hiding on his private island, to figure out what to do next.

Kintobar tries to invent something that would help the everyday person: a pair of speedy running shoes.

Due to its unpredictability rating of 95.9%, He needs a subject to test but all the lab animals have been taken to other various locations for testing and won't be back for at least a month.

As he is walking in the woods a few days later, he spies a little wild hedgehog by the side of the trail. He decides that any animal would do for the experiment, and captures it and takes it back to his lab.

He modifies his running shoes to fit the hedgehog, and puts him on a treadmill to see what happens.

He start raising the treadmills speed...and before you know it he has reached 500 MPH...and the hedgehog is STILL on that treadmill!!

But as the hedgehog nears a sonic boom, Kintobar's lab equipment starts to fail. He tries his best to repair what is breaking, but he has lost track of time, and the hedgehog reaches the Sonic BOOM!

When this happens, the treadmill can't keep up and the hedgehog flies off the treadmill, into the lab. The hedgehog starts spinning, and ricochets around the lab, smashing everything in site, including various chemicals. Some of these chemicals fall onto Kintobar in the confusion, and he runs from the lab in fear. The hedgehog is bouncing everywhere and finally he hits a button which sets off the self destruct system for the lab. He smashes out a glass window and flies back into the woods, as the lab explodes violently.

Kintobar at last realizes that there was a huge stockpile of nuclear storage tanks inside that lab, and the explosion caused the radiation to start settling on the area. He flees to the other side of this island, where he starts construction on a large scale city. It is up to now that he realized that his technological prowess could benefit ALL of mankind, and so he starts building robotic slaves by capturing the wildlife on the island. He renames himself Dr. Robotnick.

    MEANWHILE...

The radiation has settled and dissipated. The hedgehog wakes up from the blast, and noticed he is now BLUE. He has longer arms and feet. He still has the shoes on, and he can stand on two legs. He knows that the person who did this to him must be stopped, as he could be hurting the other wildlife in the area.

So he starts to run. FAST. He stops, and realizes that it was the shoes that was allowing him to run at the speed he was running on the treadmill. Now he realizes he can run this fast ALL the time. So he decides to use this new power to stop the evil scientist.

He sees robots roaming the island, and knows that the scientist was behind this. He wants to stop the robots but doesn't know how. He finally notices that his spikes have become sharper and more curved. He decides to roll into the enemy, and destroys the bot and frees an animal. He is furious that Robotnick has captured his friends and made them robotic slaves. He also now knows his speed is working on his spin too, and can start saving the island by destroying these robots.

    MEANWHILE...

The construction of his city is almost complete. While he was busy building the city, he has been constructing special Gold Rings to travel between dimensions. He has been researching on special Emeralds, which have been know to giv great power to the user. He wants the emeralds so he can build a machine to send out his robots around the world through dimensional portals.

Robotnick decides to check on the island. He notices a really fast blur on one of his monitors located in the Green Hill region. He slows down the cam and sees the hedgehog he tested the shoes on. He doesn't know what to make of it...till the hedgehog destroys one of his slaves and frees the animal.

He knows that the hedgehog must be smart enough now to know that something was wrong with the island. He puts it on himself to build a machine to destroy him. He makes a Ball & Chain weapon and tries to beat the hedgehog. But the hedgehog has realized now that his jump spin can be used to free the animals, so he uses it to stop Robotnick's machine too. Robotnick flees to another part of the island.

This happens many times in many different regions of the island, including a lava filled mountain, an underwater cave, and even in the night sky. He destroys robots along the way, and finds Robotnick's Gold Rings, and has been taking the emeralds to prevent Robotnick from getting them. He destroys Robotnick's machine at the end of the area, which Robotnick designs to take advantage of the area they fight. Somehow, the hedgehog keeps coming!

The hedgehog finally reaches the city, and Robotnick puts many devilish traps to stop the hedgehog here. The hedgehog takes his time avoiding the traps and destroying more robots. At the end, Robotnick is behind a wall, and drops him into the underground sewer area beneath the city, because now he knows the hedgehog's weakness...WATER.

Sonic falls under the water, and realizes he can't run as fast, or breathe. He finds a patch of air bubbles and swallows one, and gets some much needed air. He starts destroying robots and getting through the sewers to reach an underground entrance to Robotnick's lair.

Robotnick has been WELL prepared by now though, and has devised a machine that the hedgehog CAN'T use his speed on. The hedgehog comes in and is surprised at this machine. It takes him a few dodges to realize how to beat him. Robotnick's machine is eventually destroyed, and Robotnick tries to flee, but is smashed down by the Hedgehog in a dramatic final blow.

As he falls to his doom, he says " I'll get you yet...SONIC THE HEDGEHOG!"

Note that this is the first time the name is even mentioned.

Sonic is stunned. He now has a name that is edgy, cool, and describes his new power. Also he realizes this is the 1st time anyone has called him by a personalized name.

The credits roll as he runs back to the Green Hills, and is happy that he stopped the scientist before something bad got to the outside world. Running past all the things he broke, jumping on bouncers, running around loops, running to return home. Once he gets there, the six emeralds start reacting violently, and make the island the way it was supposed to be in a huge blinding flash, in which they return to their dimension.

By now the credits have ended, and ends with the classic "SEGA!"

But if you keep watching it, it shows that Robotnick has prepared a jet, to fly to another island, and start his plan anew. He says he will build a huge robotic spaceship, in which to continue his plans to take over the world. It ends with him laughing maniacally, with Silver Sonic being shown with glowing red eyes.

    END.

I would like to point out that K2J's story is EPIC.

I think a proper Sonic the Hedgehog movie would be awesome, but it'd have been to be a little comical to be taken seriously by adults, if you get me.

Oh, not at all. But you would have to embrace the surreal, dreamlike nature of it, for it to work.

Sonic OVA. That says it all.

Now, seriously =P Something like OVA, indeed. Maybe less "save the president's daughter" and more like the original games, but you get the idea. It's like somebody had got it right at least once =P

I don't know, I feel Sonic and Robotnik really need to be played as quirky, larger than life characters.

But yeah, the surreal like nature. That's the thing sometimes what appears to be an attempt at humour is kind of there just to make things feel odd. Alice in Wonderland kind of thing. Sonic would work well like that. Though I wouldn't mind seeing a more Sci-fi based Sonic(SA2 style) if they figure this into it.

What about Sonic CD? I'd say Amy/Metal Sonic would be just as important.

If people did go see a sonic movie in theaters, a decent portion of the audience proabably wouldn't be the "gamer" or the kind that plays all these recent sonic games. So if they were going to make a movie, it would have to have an original, new plot.
And it would also have to be epic, to pull people in.
And no, it shouldn't be about sonic running through green hills to stop robotnik. This isn't the 90's.

A Sonic Movie I would think of would be a mix of SatAM with a side of OVA, namely involving the Metal Sonic aspect. Which would, essentially, sound like a darker version of the OVA.

I think it should be about the ancient hedgehog hero who saved many ancient civilations from disasters. It could basically be a B.C. version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, with specific elements changed to "match" the time period.

Eventually, Ancient Super Sonic defeats Ancient Robotnik and saves the Master Emerald; the scene transitions into the mural in Hidden Palace, with one Professor Gerald Robotnik gazing upon it in awe. He brushes off some dust with his hand to get a clearer view. He uses this being as inspiration for his Ultimate Life project, which will hopefully cure his granddaughter of NIDS (The Sonic Series AIDS joke) and unlock the key to immortality. But wait, there's more.

    -35 Years later-

A man in his early thirties walks into a classroom of small forest animals. He's spent his post-education years experimenting on the limits of several different animals' abilities, and he had been going about doing this by teaching them several subjects in a classroom setting. These animals would eventually "graduate" and be freed, to teach others of its species. The teacher presents himself to the class as Professor Robotnik, grandson of the smartest man who ever lived. He notices two of the students are missing; a hedgehog couple. They eventually run in with a smaller hedgehog, and explain to Professor Robotnik that their hoglet is really sick, and could possibly die.

Robotnik, whose reputation had grown over the years, believed that a death in the midst of his test subjects would look bad on his part, and that the class's take on it may negatively affect their lessons, decides to help the baby hedgehog. He spends that night going through several old journals and documents of his late grandfather, and finds bits and pieces of his immortality research. He goes over the formulas dozens of times before it clicks, but realizes that the "immortality" bit may be too much of a stretch, even for him. He modifies the formulas to fit the occasion, and finally goes through with the experiment, thinking not of it as creating an ultimate lifeform, but as a simple medicine experiment.

The experiment seems to enhance the little hedgehog's natural abilities. Due to this, he becomes amazed by how fast he can run, and quickly implements his newfound speed into his everyday life. At this point, Robotnik is intrigued and creates a treadmill, humorously able to withstand a ground speed which could break the sound barrier. Over the next ten or so years, the hedgehog grows up running on the treadmill every day, continually getting faster and faster. Robotnik nicknames him Sonic because of obvious reasons. Eventually, the treadmill can't take anymore, and Sonic breaks the sound barrier, which instantly turns him blue, and sends him careening around the room in a ball. From here, RGamer2009's story would probably fit.

And then the second movie could go back and revisit how Gerald's immortality research really went......dun dun dun.

    Mine was terrible.

Wait, what about Sonic's parents? How does Robotnik go from Prof. Dr.? PLOTHOLES FFFFFFFFFFF

Whatever, plotholes everywhere, as it should be I guess?
