With some exceptions, most of the blocks will be pieced together from these two. Air your grievances now, because I'm not rebuilding every one of them later on.

 

I feel like they're too gradient-heavy, personally. The original art gave the blocks shape through simple colors—why can't we? It makes them look less like blocks and more like unrealistically-shaded plastic. I don't think it's the feel we should go for. It might be worth trying to experiment with a style that uses less color steps—maybe then it won't look as awkward.

(Before you edit your shades, fix your shapes! Look:
Incorrect ----------> Correct


They have to be simetrical! That non-simetrical effect was caused by the pallet limitation that could not make the shading very well!)*

* That is not an absolute truth, it is how I see! =P

 

Perhaps, but I'd expect them to at least dither it for a smooth blend like they did the highlight, or something like this:



The light block goes another pixel higher, though it doesn't exist as a standalone 16x16 block anyway.

Number 4. The others have too blurry edges.

I'd say 2 or 4; either looks nicely done - although out of the two, I think No. 2 looks the best all-rounder for me

 

2 is my favorite. Looks just like the original should be remastered.

 

I prefer the 4th one, though the differences between the 2nd and the 4th are really small

 

I'd have to go with 4. That crisp look nails it for me.

 

The backgrounds for Emerald Hill look really good. Have you tried making them slightly out of focus? It will give more depth perception and make the foreground area where you're actually playing stand out more and be a bit more focused. Otherwise, with the detailed background in 100% focus, it could get distracting.

 

2, I like tweaker feel it fits the style of the original.

 

I like option 4. I don't have a real reason other than it looks right for it

I played with the idea briefly for the last mockup, and decided that it's impossible to tell what would be best without seeing it in motion.

 

4 is the best in my opinion, its very similar to 2, but I love the sharpness.
