When you break the emerald that is blocking the tube in HPZ, the palace is flooded with water since the emerald was blocking it. It's like in Labyrinth Zone and that Sonic CD Level.

Just to let you know a theory.

I probably should get back to work on my site someday...
Too bad the thing won't actually break!
    A good theory nonetheless.

What you mean the water raises in Tidal Tempest.

TO my conclusions, the water actually lowers.

But yea, your avatar does kind of scare me, but it is tolerable.

Yea but theory or not, the emerald can't be broken, not in the beta, and not in the final. It's the exact same code as the white stones in GHZ Sonic 1, and you can't break them either.

So the stones and the emerald is the same. Then we can always ask what those stones is doing... I think they're there just to slow down Sonic's speed.

I never got to the level, I stoped at one level and forgot about it.

  10. If I recall correctly, one of the creators of the game said in an interview the stuff about the emerald just being a breakable block. They said that it had no other signifigance.

If it was ment to be breakable, it would have been programmed to be breakable.

There are two objects that are breakable in our Beta. One in Oil Ocean and one in Chemical Plant. If the emerald was ment to be breakable, then it would have been programmed that way from the start. In the final Sonic 2, the emerald code has been changed, but only to point to an undefine mappings table.

Even if the designer for the emerald said it was breakable, the code doesn't lie. The emerald is just a block.

If the emerald is a block, what does it block and how does one remove the block?

The emerald uses the collision box routine. There are several objects that use the collision box routine to keep Sonic from going into them.

You know those stones (white blue) that you can find in Green Hill Zone (Sonic 1)? Those have one purpose, to stop Sonic in his way of making a new act record; Limit his speed sort of.
The code is exactly the same for the emerald. The only difference is that the emerald is alone, which makes it special. What does an block doing at that place alone? That area is looking like a boss area, or a demo area. And don't forget the level select icon, which yet again proves that the emerald block is somehow special.

EDIT: Yea, you asked a question :P
My answer: The emerald can't be removed in any way.

I remember seeing somewhere that if the water level were altered then the emerald disappears upon contact with water. Dunno if that's plausible. It certainly fits in with Nemesis' theory that you got up that big slide by riding a cork tile of some sort as the water level rose.

No. I have tested it myself. The emerald does not float on the water, or disappears.

And there is no code for making it float. The emerald will just be on its place when water is rising.
