Sounds like the situation is good again, I'm glad.

Also, you forgot the Super Sonic theme there. Somebody had to say it.

An update: You guys can upload your music directly to the database now, you don't have to use those file sharing sites afterall.

    http://sanik.hacking-cult.org/inker/index.php

You have to register an account to use the S2HD database (It is separate from your Sonic Retro account)

After clicking "[Upload Your Own Original?]", upload your music where it says "File Attachment (Vector)". Also upload a temporary image thumbnail, because the database has currently only been configured to deal with art (this will be fixed soon).

You'll notice also that at the top of the database page, the contribution guideline for music has been added:

    • All remastered music should transcribe the originally intended instruments and overall style, whilst updating them to today's musical standards. Obviously style can be enhanced by adding some more detailed notes, good instrument sets, stereo panning and velocity changes, as well as overdubs or complete drum kits and loops. Notes themselves should remain untouched, but of course, new notes are also welcomed to avoid shallow sounds.

Thanks, we'll add that (and Options + Invincibility)

Could someone also tell us exactly how many times faster the speed shoes music is?

Also, what should the minimum recommended bitrate be for submitted music?

And shall we insist upon using either Ogg or Mp3, or allow both?

I'm not uploading a damn thing of mine to that database. I prefer to use my own webhosting, thanks.

I'll put my music on Sonic the Hedgehog 2 HD as I make it.

When this project is released, I'll probably rip the music from the original Sonic 2 songs and swap out the files.

    Just two questions:
Can a trial member like me register and upload content in the database or it's necessary to be a regular member?
What kind of content is considered "uploadeable"?

Just that's what I want to know. Sorry if my questions are too obvious. :P

I don't know, but I just fixed any chances of that becoming an issue.

    Oh~! I'm now a member. I must recognize that I'm a little nervous.
    Thanks you! ;)

Now... getting back into the thread, I still want to know if when I have material to upload if I can do it directly or if I have to post here first or... I don't know, some kind of bureaucracy needed so don't get my ass kicked.
Meanwhile, I've sent a PM to SANiK. I wonder if I can register now. :)
Ah! Something more: what about "test" music? I mean, for example, pieces of music that I could want to show you all for suggestions, examples or comparison reasons before I get the work done.

Sorry for all this questions but, I think I'm not the only one who want to know all this after all.
See you soon... and thanks again!

GatoSoft, I suggest to upload the source midi file and your version in mp3 format, both properly identified. It would be good to have in the file name both zone and author's name... and a version number would help a lot top keep it organized. The midi is useful for anyone willing to help you and/or make it sound like a good "original tile-set".

I think it is of the uttermost importance to add a brief description of what has been done in your version, what type of feedback you need and how you plan to develop the music. I'm looking forward to listening to your versions.

I'm almost done with the Game Over theme. Just need to add the pitch bends in the very last lead note.

Would you please do the same to my account in case this is really an issue to upload stuff? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your suggestions, Mario!
You're right. Anyway, I always upload my files with proper description in his filenames and also in their internal tags. But with the MIDI files... I've to attach them too with his respective MP3 version. :P

Well... I'll try to make some less-crappy music this time... maybe my own version of Emeral Hill Zone.
    See you soon, guys! :)

Before uploading to the official database, you can post it here for C&C to improve it.
(However, remember the quality requirements, set in the first page's submissions! )

To let all users recognize it's a "test" I suggest you to write a text line like this:

    -------------------
    **WIP MUSIC**
    -------------------

    LINK

About EHZ contributions so far, I wanted to tell you one thought had been stuck into my head yesterday:

EHZ is the first level of S2HD, and the first time you'll see all the shiny HD stuff on screen will be AFTER the level bars disappears.
Than I remembered the great Scubasteeve's CPZ intro arrangment, and thought:

What if EHZ has a small intro music intro WHEN level tiltlecards appears than explodes in a powerful music AS titlecards disappears? It would definitely pump up any player :)

Irixion, I must say, great job in your CNZ for sticking to the original notes. However, the first few seconds of the song are incorrect. I don't know if that was done for looping's sake, but comparing to the original http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jl6kjAkVw_s you can see that you took the loop bridge from the middle of the song and used it as the intro.

Some of the instruments need a little cleaning up, but otherwise it's a good update to the original.

This is a noteworthy submission for CNZ in that it avoided over-emphasis on capturing a vegas-feel and instead stuck to keeping the sonic 2 feeling to it.

One might argue that the vegas-casino feel needs to be in the song, so perhaps Irixion's can be seen as the left-hand side of the spectrum of updatability to the song, and the jazzy casino ones are the right hand side, so it would be interesting to see something down the middle. Perhaps a little polish to this one can achieve something similar.

    Keep up the good work.

  14. I'm starting to give up with CNZ .... Unless I'm going to completely redo it, from scratch. Check OOZ and HPZ, and tell me what you think. Out of all three, I think HPZ sounds best :P

No need for that because we'll most likely include all the original music so that it can be optionally switched on or off in the options.

If trial members can send private messages on the Sonic Retro forums, then you can register to use the S2HD database (it is a completely separate account from Sonic Retro).

    Good content

Ideally you want your work to receive some feedback before you upload it, but if you do upload it, post your work here at the same time to receive some feedback, then going on to improve it further.

The database is really for uploading stuff your happy with. So if your just testing stuff or playing around with things, it's better to post it here.

By the way folks, don't bother trying to loop your music submissions. The music in Sonic 2 actually loops in a special way that we'll have to write some code to do for us. As long as you remaster all of the original, that's fine.

    Irixon,

You seem to care about post production, such as EQs, reverbs and delays, which is very good to enhance the music! However, here is my review of your latest samples. I'm a purist idiot when it comes down to music, so please don't get angry:

    CNZ:

Musically (notes, tempo, etc), it is perfect, just great. Do not change anything

However, to my ears is has too much delay. It seems indeed an artificial effect rather than a proper ambience effect.

The instrument set would also sound nicer with an acoustic bass. The one you chose sound a bit synthetized, I think. For the main chords in part A, I couldn't really understand whether you've used a piano or eletctirc piano. I'd go for the first. See, I'm a purist :P In part B, I was let down by another synth instrument. What about a chromatic percussion there, like xylophone, vibes, marimba, etc? :) Other set of wind instruments for these chords would be appropriate as well.

Finally, the panning. This is of great importance to give it the correct feel (supposing we want to feel like attending a jazz concert in a cassino or something). There's no rule in this case, but perhaps these pictures will help you:

    http://files.marcoskern.webnode.com/200000...8c1db/stage.jpg
    http://perpetuajazz.com/Shows/Perpetua%20-...AGE%20SETUP.jpg

    HPZ:
I believe it was intended to sound eathereal and mystical... Tweaker's version is closer to this objective, I think. Softer percussions and a more delicated tone in the lead instrument will get you there ;) Unlike CNZ, synth instruments would suit this song.

    OOZ
Ethnical instruments are a must for this one. The sitar is AWESOME. But, again, Tweaker's got more appropriate instruments for prercussions and lead. This track deserves some research on middle-west instruments.

That's pretty much why I encourage team work. If Tweaker and you join forces, sharing instruments and post production ideas, I'm sure we'll have some masterpieces here!

GAME OVER - SOURCE MIDI AND WIP REMASTER

This is the source midi file for anyone interested in giving it a try:
    http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/6/12/195...o%20v1.0%29.mid

    And this my version:
    http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/6/12/195...Over%20v1.0.mp3

    Instrument set:
    - Acoustic bass
    - Drums
    - Trombone
    - Wooden Xylophone

Acoustic bass is a must for a quiet jazz set.
Well, the drumer just kicks the bass drum, so... nothing to comment.
I chose a trombone as a lead instrument due to the vibrato in the end. I'm not very familiar with brass and wind families, so please let me know if there is another brass/wind instrument capable of performing this type of vibrato.
Finally, chromatic percussion is usual for jazz sets and the wooden xylophone is what sounds similar to the original I think.

Panning was set imagining musicians placed from left to right: bass, drums, trombone and xylophone.

I believe I got the "feel" right by choosing these instruments, but please let me know what you think.
I'm not planning any musical updates to this. However, if you have better sounding instruments, please post a link to them or make your versions. I'd work with some reverbs now to give ambience to it.
