People have probably seen these pictures, there's also a video on YouTube about this prototype.
These Sega-16 protos are very interesting, such as this Sonic game based on SatAM.

Holy shit dude...that site has a nice collection of pictures that I have never seen. The scans of the Sonic 1 proto's are crisp as fuck too...

If I may take a stab, later than the Wai proto, some ways earlier than the GamePro proto.
    • Tails stands on the floors instead of (continually, and hillariously) dying by falling through)
    • No gold/black rotating blocks, only pink/yellow, or blue/yellow
    • More developed background than what is in the Wai beta, can't compare to Gamepro 'cause my monitor - despite bright and contrast at full blast - is still dim as fu-I'm stupid-ck.

Wow, are you guys sure that [Spring Yard] pic isn't a known hoax?

That background kinda resembles the China Town level in Revenge of Shinobi. Cool stuff.

The Casino Night one's been on CulT for donkey's years. =P

The Sparkling Zone one I've seen before, but I don't recall where - I remember the distinct chinese-looking sign in the background of the shot, though, since I recognised it as soon as I saw the picture. Doesn't appear to be on CulT or SOST, though, which are the places I thought I would've seen it. = S Any idea where that one's from?

EDIT: A quick search helped me remember where I saw that pic before - this very board. =P

The clearer pics all seem to have been taken from this article, scanned by Rlan from an issue of CVG.

Have those Spinball ones been posted? I don't remember ever seeing a beta pic of "Sonic Pinball" before.

    EDIT:
OH never mind, there's a whole freaking video I missed.

Relevant in subject to that site, there's something that I found to be.. quite intriguing. And my apologies if this has been brought up before (not being around here all too often, in favor of working on my hack), but on the sonic 1 section of that site says:
"Sonic Team originally planned 5 acts a stage..with 15 stages." That's basically 75 acts, and this is coming from a magazine with in-game images of the levels, so you would think that someone would have at that point looked into the ratio of the time it takes to finish one act before saying they're going to do 5 acts for each stage of 15 stages.

Edit: Never mind the whole source thing, I saw the linked preview there. :P But still, 75 acts.. Wow.

    Anyways

I don't remember reading the "5 acts" stuff ever before, it could be a a typo.

The numberes were actually spelled out as "five" for the acts, with "fifteen" for the stages.. Also, the magazine mentions something about a release for the C64, amstrad, etc.. Eh, I'm starting to think that the magazine was just stating they believed would happen, but I don't know

Anyways, what I was originally going to say (before I saw the sonic 1 stuff), was that by the looks of toxic cave in that beta , the idea of recycling some of the scrapped sonic 2 levels didn't start during the this part of production. Now, I am aware that it's pretty much obviously just intended to serve as a concept and all, But I really don't see very much that was kept for later on, other than the cave/rock theme and the crocobot present at the start, (which is pretty much why I'm only guessing it's what would later become Toxic Cave). But anyways, It does seems like a pretty neat start (Though I really never really enjoyed what was released), and If there are anymore, I'd like to see other Sonic Spinball level demos like this.

Maybe the 5 thing relates to sections on each table -- as you can see, the early gameplay was designed more like screen-by-screen NES pinball rather than the smooth scrolling final version.

Dude, definitely not the place for that, we are talking about other things here. Go post it in something in Hacking if it is that important.

Edit: This is replying to the chicken thing.

On a random offtopic moment, that game always amazed me for how colourful it is, considering it's a Master System title.

  18. Talk about protos.... watch this...
It's not like we're gonna get the beta but it is "something" that tells us there was a beta released for advertising

In reply to jmzilver and SOTI, these aren't shots from an actual prototype. They're from an animation created by Peter Morawiec, supposedly in Deluxe Paint for the Amiga. They never existed in ROM form in that style.
