DEZ New Art

    I've overhauled the art on DEZ for Sonic 2, and if you pay attention, it oughta look familiar(I used the side art from the energy ball bonus stage in S3&K and flipped it on its side). I originally was going to put that art into CNZ, but it was proving to be a pain to manipulate, but then I figured that it would work great for DEZ since the zone is rather boxy. Here are the early results(No background yet, folks, or additional things sticking up on the level.) Does it look good or should I leave this art strictly back in the S3&K bonus stage?

    Now as for my question..this is going to influence the background I use. Is there any way to port over strictly the background tiles from another level, while leaving everything else alone, or do I have to draw the background tiles in manually? I sort of have a theme going that I could bring this level into if this is possible, but if I have to redraw the whole background, I'm not going to bother. I'll do something else.

    It's a cool idea, but it just seems a bit wierd, if you ask me. It's actually a nice idea though.

    And Sonic (life icon) is giving the finger in that second shot. </stupid joke>

    Try a more gray color. I bet when theres a background it will look better too.

    Looks pretty good so far. Try using the original stage's pallette though, that dull blue isn't too pleasing. Good luck on the BG, too.

    I don't like it. I suppose it's ultimatley up to you, but it just doesn't seem to work well. Probably because it was meant for a special stage, filped sideways and put as ground looks quite odd.

    You would have to manually redraw the BG.....unless you copy the art to the same tiles as they are originally drawn, and the BG part of the 16x16 mappings as well. Then copy the BG part of the 128x128 mappings. (these do not have to be at the same tiles)

    That should work.

    Given my erratic tile drawing style, its almost certain to conflict with some tiles in there, so its going to be a lost cause. I'll figure something else out. As for more details, this is what I'm working with at the moment. All is done but the small bit of bg.

    I'm simply putting these up for people's opinions on whether this zone looks good or not. I'm not going to release this immediately because I have a few more zones in the works and I'd like to release them as a package once more is done. There's a few small technical elements that I would like to put in(so some of you techies, I may ask for your help/notes on some things in a few weeks). One other new zone is almost done, one more confirmed that I'll put out, and another one that I've sort of started screwing with, but that I'd like to talk to Knuckles Prower about, since its based off art he put into a contest but that was never used. Unfortunately he seems to never come around anymore. I'm also going to touch up my previous 2 zones and put em in. So when its all said and done with, this release of my hack(Sonic 4, for lack of a better title), should have about 6 zones from the get-go, with more done in time.

    I like that better, except for the brown I suppose, but it's not terrible. Those steps look like warp pipes though.

    I'm not quite sure why, but I like the art myself. I can't remember anyone using the S3&K bonus stage art in a level before.

    One question though, are those blue and white buttons going to be animated?

    I'd like to make them flash on and off at some point, once I learn how to make it do that. Like I said, after I get the main layouts and stuff in, I want to add different features to hopefully make it seem like an entirely different game.

    That step art looks varry close to mario's pipes XD

    But anyway, I like the idea, but I still can't decide if I like it till I see the background art.

    There we go. A very early background. I may spruce up the earth a bit(do you think it should be lowered, or does it look alright?) It even moves, giving it a feeling like the Death Egg is orbiting out of control. I just need to fix the annoying flashing part in the background(I took this shot while the flashing part was faded out).

    I looked at the file name, and, Mecasino? Interesting Zone name. Mechasino seems a bit better though. =P

    It would look better in the middle, plus fill the blue with something, maybe the Doomsday "earth" graphics...

    I like the latter picture, but the overall scene still screams "dark and empty" to me. Now admittedly, this would seem to be the ideal scene for the whole space-base concept, but I think you'd do a bit better with a surreal touch... Utter chaos, mass destruction, and something to show off Eggman's true relentless prowess in regards to his quest to rule the earth with an iron fist. Think metallic, think advanced... think badass. The whole enviroment should be a lot more active... maybe some ships heading towards earth, to conquer it once and for all?

    Just a thought, take it or leave it. I like the idea though.

    Ah, that was when I originally was going to have it be the replacement for Casino Night Zone, and Mecasino Zone(combination of mecha and casino) was to have been the name for it. However, I worked with it and noticed that it wouldn't really work well because it would've been a bit difficult to fit curves into that art, and CNZ has TONS of them. And Tweaker, that isn't a bad idea, but my idea was sort of the opposite-My thinking was to have it be sort of like the last remaining hideout, because Sonic trashed everything else of Robotnik's (with Space Base Zone leading up to this, and yes, I will end up making a few minor alterations to it before I put this hack out here) and after this, we know the story...the Death Egg crashes on the Floating Island, Robotnik has to stop and repair it, etc.
