I made a video of the arcade version, so I can confirm that the old man appears at the end of the expert (Europe) course, though I recorded that video on my defunct laptop, so it would be hard for me to take a screenshot, perhaps someone can clean up a frame from my video?

Used the first Action Replay code I could find to stop the timer (FF0554:0402), held B, turned on fast forward:

    Beginner: Pose to camera

Junior: Pose to camera, woman kisses you

Senior: Pose to camera, woman kisses you, old man

Expert: You're a woman! Other woman walks away, old man

Even though the timer was locked at 4 I got different scores, so I guess it doesn't actually stop the timer at all!

  3. Thank God you did this already, because I didn’t even consider using Action Replay codes and was just going to try it with save states haha. I’m decent enough at the arcade version to clear expert but the way the bike moves on the Mega Drive is something I’ve never gotten a good handle on.

Anyway, cool to see those endings. I typically just play the 3DS version so I probably never would have seen these.

This page will disappear soon-ish. Most of those hacks are now spread across this category (feel free to get screenshots and talk about them - I prefer having a working brain).

But there are (or in this case, were) some blockers, such as:

"Gran Turismo 5 Prologue", which claimed to be a hack of a game that doesn't exist: "Fun Car Rally".

You remember Fun Car Rally right? It was fun, and it had cars, and you went rallying - an instant classic. We were classing it as an unreleased game, other sites don't acknowledge its existence at all, so what is Fun Car Rally? Is there a dump?

Yes. And spoilers: it's a prototype of Combat Cars.

I suspect it confused people because it pre-dates the "combat" in Combat Cars. It has very different music and some of the content is missing, including the first track you see when starting the final game.

    [IMG] [IMG]
Fun Car Rally | Combat Cars

but the similarities are obvious, and if you were wondering why COMBAT CARS, a game with DYSTOPIAN CYBERPUNK characters in the FUTURE starts you off on a sunny beach, I'm going to guess publisher Accolade might be to blame.

The fact Combat Cars isn't much fun (and that its only interesting feature the Sonic 2-style split-screen mode) likely explains why this wasn't spotted sooner. The prototype, incidentally, doesn't offer much - there are sixteen tracks, you'll bounce off some walls for a bit (or run out of time), and win or lose, you'll be sent back to the title screen. Menus are bare bones and you can't select a character yet.

As for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue?

It translates things into Russian and swaps out the car sprites (are they borrowed from GTA 1?), but it's still very much an incomplete video game. I'm not sure if there's a dump of this one yet.

There are two prominent ROM naming databases/schemes for Mega Drive games: GoodGen and No-intro.

GoodGen is older, and was good until we realised it wasn't, in my mind because it kept track of bad dumps, as well as crappy hacks to make things work on crappy emulators. It was also probably maintained by people who were still learning how the Mega Drive worked and what its market looked like, and crucially, people who couldn't read or didn't test things, so was full of dross and mistakes. See also: "Sonic and Crackers".

(I remember being told once that you need a list of bad dumps so you could compare your dump and know if it was bad. To which my 15-year late answer is... "why not just compare it to the good dump?". Why are we keeping non-working or incorrect versions of games - all they "preserve" is inadequate dumping tools.)

No-intro is a more accurate system, but only if you want to actually play the games. It's mostly only interested in good dumps, except its definition of "good" doesn't take into account the genuine crap that was put to market. So you don't get bad dumps listed anymore... but you also don't get the bootlegs, or the community hacks, or the confusing garbage nobody understands.

So where is it all? NonGoodGen, where ROMs go to die.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is a mess that the internet might want to clean up. For sure, 90% of this list is ROM hacks or homebrew projects from the internet - someone else can deal with the fan projects, but amongst these non-stories are genuine dumps of bootleg cartridges, the sort I have conveniently found myself helping to cover on Sega Retro over the last few days.

Here's a load of Sonic 2 ROMs. Clearly some are hacks - several almost certainly came from these boards, but we've got some pirates in there, and badly labeled mysteries that could be anything.

    Sonic The Hedgehog 2 [T+Rus_Pirates] [p1].bin

"Rus_Pirates". Is this an unlicensed commercial release, or something found on an online forum (or both?).

    [IMG] [IMG]

We have boxes suggesting there's a Russian translation of Sonic 2 out there. "русская версия" means "Russian version", but these cartridges were put together by different companies - which one is it??

p.s if you wondering if Ukraine had its own set of bootleg Mega Drive releases... yep!

    [IMG] [IMG]

I mean sure the text was often in Russian but... it's a thing.

Thanks to the work of Geti3220 on the wiki, I can tell the difference between Russian and Ukrainian Mega Drive bootlegs. Sort-of. Some were apparently sold in both territories, but hey, shut up, some come in little blue boxes:

    [IMG] [IMG]

There aren't any special Ukrainian translations that we know of, but it is a fairly distinct market. My current favourite is this:

I originally thought it was just some dirt, but no, they gave Timothy Dalton a beard for some reason.

  8. I updated Ongeki's template to include the newer games and music, but it's not showing anything different from before. I don't remember this being a problem when I updated the MJ template a while ago. Can this get checked, please?

  10. Saw in Makoto Uchida's SEGA VOICE interview about Dynamite Deka for SEGA AGES 2500 Series, the game has boss characters from Uchida's previous games ALIEN STORM, Altered Beast, WING WAR, ALIENFRONT, GOLDEN AXE, and a game that never made it past location test: Gama no En (蝦蟇の園) that stars a frog as the main character, which apparently a lot of people have discussed and gets linked with Ribbit!

At the time of writing, we have 779 multi-carts across all Sega platforms in our database. Although there'll be hundreds more. Like, seriously - I found dozens just this morning. I got to a stage where I was just guessing numbers.

    How many are dumped?

    uh

Well here's one, left to rot online as "14-in-1 [p1][!].bin". Extra hypens in the name, not really a "pirate" in the traditional sense, and not a good dump either, seeing as most of the game data is missing. Haven't we done well.

The only game that will boot is Ms. Pac-Man, which is even better because it's a port notorious for not supporting six button controllers properly. If you weren't au fait with the quirks in the Mega Drive library, this release would be even less useful than it already is, and sadly, no clues about its origins either - you just get a basic menu and spelling errors. Shive it.

It could also be argued that had Sega Retro not existed, it would be exceedingly difficult to find the context surrounding this ROM. What does "14 in 1" even look like in the wild? With a name that generic you'll never find it!

Okay that's a bad example - there aren't many multi-carts with 14 games, the contents are written on the label, and this one just happens to be more common than most. But that wouldn't be the case with some of the 778 others. Maybe.

Hilariously though... we're actually struggling to document this specific cartridge. Roughly half(?) of Mega Drive multi-carts are kind enough to either explicitly print a product code on the packaging, or look similar enough to others that you can safely group them together. That means we can make lists like in my post above, or make crappy placeholder pages based on looks alone:

Mega Drive unlicensed multi-carts (group 1)
Mega Drive unlicensed multi-carts (group 2)
Mega Drive unlicensed multi-carts (group 3)
Mega Drive unlicensed multi-carts (group 4)

The problem is that "Super 14 in 1" has no obvious identifiers, and doesn't look like any other multi-cart (or at least, the design isn't close enough for me to be confident of grouping it with others).

    There's a few nearlys:

    [IMG] [IMG]
These are probably related, but I wouldn't want to make the call. If we had dumps of these two it would be easier, but we don't. And I'm sure you're desperate to know what "Solario Sonic" is.

Okay so I am severely fucking hopped up on caffiene for 26 hours straight and can't do more research on it atm, but I've been trying to find the tiniest officially released Genesis game (no, I'm not talking alpha prototypes). Anything below 512kb. Originally Osomatu-kun Hatyametya Gekizyoo was one of my candidates since that babys literally 256 kilobytes but after some seriously dedicated probing of segaretro i've found these three which clock in at 128. I can't find anything lower like 64, so are these the tiniest games or is there something lower. Game Tosyokan has some tiny ones but they rarely dip below 256

(I can't help but think "you swallow" is an elaborate joke)

    Presenting (again)
    Mega Drive unlicensed multi-carts.

The biggest database of crappy bits of plastic since the last time I did something like this. Previously most of these were hiding on project pages on the off-chance I'd find more information, but given that's exceedingly unlikely, they're now all in one public place, grouped as best I can.

Except a handful of carts I still don't know how best to deal with. And the ones I can't prove existed anymore. And some others.

One thing you will notice is there's a lot of "XXXX"s and empty tables around, aka "I am lazy and haven't filled in the details yet". But you can do that.

There are many many many mysteries as to where they all came from, with carts appearing on auction sites all over the world, including Argentina, Brazil, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Russia, Taiwan, Ukraine, Uruguay and all over central Asia and eastern Europe. There is no shortage. You can still buy some of these though AliExpress.

I believe 128kB is the smallest. The only thing I can think of that's smaller would be BIOS and TMSS ROMs.

Which games appear the most in Mega Drive multi-carts - it's a question nobody has ever asked, but with only a small fraction of the records compiled so far, I have a preliminary answer:

    #10: (10 each)
Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi
    Alien Storm (Mega Drive)

    #7: (11 each)
    Quackshot Starring Donald Duck
    Tetris
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse (Mega Drive)

    #6: (12)
    Columns

    #4: (13 each)
Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure
    Sunset Riders

    #3 (14)
    Chase H.Q. II

    #2 (22)
    Sonic the Hedgehog (Mega Drive)

    #1 (24)
    Streets of Rage

It's an interesting pool of titles that keep turning up, and not necessarily the games you would associate with the system. The Sunset Riders port is very lacking, and Chase HQ II is a game nobody ever talks about. More whenever.

Remember how we never really found a solution to Sega-related Photo CDs, and that I ended up dumping a list here before running away?

Well it's about to get more complicated:

These, I believe, are video CDs. As in, standard video CDs that can be played in any video CD player. I hope.

They were marketed in Russia by bootleggers as Dreamcast discs. This is because software existed to let your Dreamcast run VCDs, and... I'm not totally sure how popular the format was outside of the Dreamcast ecosphere. So in Russia, VCD was a Dreamcast format. Maybe. It's confusing.

You know what else was a Dreamcast format in Russia? DivX. Burn this noise to a CD-R and special DivX software might pick it up.

I suspect the same solution will be needed for all three types of disc. And others... if they exist (I'm thinking maybe Saturn-branded VCDs?).

Oh yes and I think there's porn in the library. Because we needed that.

Someone send some to TechMoan so he can do a nice video.
