To be fair, Naofumi Hataya is a great composer but he's made some real duds. Wouldn't call Sugar Lane from Lost World the best track ever. And he also oversaw the Classic Sonic tracks in Forces.

I think all composers can be hit and miss.

Then they wouldn't have mentioned it like 3 weeks ago, and no it wasn't really accident given the kind of detailed information we got at that time like Jun involvement etc

Also if they REALLY wanted to hide this, they would have enforced an embargo till release day, or instructed sites that reviewed the game to not even mention the music change, which is a thing they can do-see also how they have embargo on certain things in Sonic Frontiers that are enforced-

I think a great example of this is Panic Puppet Act 1 - the Demo tape by Senoue sounds virtually identical to Twinkle Cart from SA1, with very little instrumentation changes.

I always assumed that Twinkle Cart was a remix of the Mega Drive version of Panic Puppet Act 1 until Jon Burton provided said demo tape in 2020. Tatsuyuki Maeda is also credited, so was he the magic? The stuff in the demo was too complex for the Genesis sound chip to handle, and I prefer Panic Puppet to Twinkle Cart for the simplifications. It's probably my favorite of all the Genesis era tunes.

I just want to take the opportunity to vent...

I've purposefully avoided seeing anything Origins related, but when I began to see the controversy around the music changes I took a peek, since I realized it wasn't going to be a positive aspect anyway. I have to say that these songs sound... awful. My family happened to be over so I let them have a listen, and did my best not to "spill the beans" regarding my opinion or motive. They all agreed the new songs were bad. They sound dull, and don't meet the quality of the other songs. But, perhaps worse than that (and I realize this can't be helped if they insist on using the proto versions), they don't jive with the other music in the game, AND even worse than that... These new songs don't capture the atmosphere - the essence - of the originals. It's like they sort of neutered the zones of their magic... I know to some degree this could be nostalgia bias, but I also think it's objectively true. Take Ice Cap Zone, the original song was harrowing, desolate and moved your body. You felt like you were deep into your journey, you'd come so far, and you were going to overcome the extreme and unforgiving environment before you. Whereas the new music, quality aside, does not embody this feeling at all. It's just sort of another run-of-the-mill, sparkly winter jingle. I sounds more like a Gameboy Advance song.

I hate being so petty, I don't want to be this sort of fan, but it sort of wrecks the experience for me. This was supposed to be the definitive edition, and they broke it. It's like you have this valuable figurine, and then one of the arms is accidentality broken off. You can no longer appreciate it without a huge caveat. Personally, I would have preferred they replaced these songs with entirely new renditions that captured the atmosphere of the originals. I personally care more about the experience than some homage to a past which never was, and then poorly executed.

I'm also a bit confused why earlier re-releases of Sonic 3 did have the original music, but not now. I seem to recall collections I had on Game Cube and PS3 had the original music.

    [edit] - spelling error.

Mostly because it doesn't have the sound style or noisescape, if that makes any sense, of Sonic 3&K. The original sounds like Sonic 4 trying to emulate the Sonic 2 Super Theme with the &K motif. The fan remix puts on the 3&K drums and tweaks some things on top of the new second loop from the extended theme, but it still sounds like the simpler 1 and 2 songs in overall structure, noise and design and doesn't really strike a good balance of both of them, especially the bass.

I actually really like the arrangement, but you'd need to overhaul the song overall as a big rearrange with a new style to its noise to really get it to fit 3&K.

Even worserer still... they don't care. Origins as a package just screams "fuck it, that'll do". It really had the potential to be something special, especially the story and anniversary modes - but the writing was on the wall from the beginning with the "one mode is in 4:3, and the other one has coins" bullshit.

This just blew my mind that the Origins songs are all from real hardware(or am I mistaken)

    What I've been saying.

A reason as to why some tracks sound 1:1 to the prototype we have is that they were made ahead of time, such as being written and programmed for other games like the case of Blue Spheres.

These new recordings always sounded to me like earlier versions. Question is, can SEGA replace these with the recordings of the prototype we know of?...

They are. With the exception of course of the new Super theme.

Not necessarily. Songs can be also implemented/developed at different times. For example, the Simon Wai prototype has "almost final" songs like Emerald Hill and "very unfinished" songs like the Menu theme or Casino Night.

And I think it's safe to say Masato Nakamura delivered them all in one batch despite how finished or unfinished they sound on the proto. Some songs are implemented as soon as the basic tracks are laid down so people can feel how they sound.

But yeah, some tracks were definitely pulled from SEGA's vault but we can't overthink this.

Man, you'd think taking lives away from Anniversary was like Sega stealing someone's dog off their front lawn. Sega tried with some parts, didn't try with others, but the games should be totally fine individually. It's actually getting kind of absurd how offended I see some people get over the Classic/Anniversary thing, which I know is lackluster but somehow that's one of the core problems people keep recounting.

I pre-ordered the deluxe version (35 on fanatical so said why not) but I'm definitely down on a lot of the vanilla package.

    No widescreen with lives
Lifeless menus for things like character select
    No Knuckles in CD
    Weird Sonic 3 songs

I'm still glad to have it, I'm sure mods will let me make it all just right but this is some real stopping at the 95 yard line stuff.

The lack of a widescreen mode for the original life specific versions of the games is forgiveable, if an oversight. Aniversary mode is an easy mode. Putting in widescreen mode for the other games in the original format surely wasn't a big ask?

Really odd that my iPhone has had better versions of Sonic 1 and 2, tehnically.

Maybe I will forgive the issues, or not, who knows, but Sega seem incapable of just knocking it out of the park again like they did with Mania and Mania plus. Sad!

How is it forgivable? It's incredibly dumb. It even makes the hud worse. I don't wanna see COINS. I wanna see KTE with the cool little picture of Knuckles.

  16. This is a very small inconsistency but Sonic 3 only plays its animation the first time you run it whereas the other games do every time.

I'm in the same boat that I don't think it's too big of a deal, but I think it's worth at least speaking up about so that it can potentially become an option down the road. Let the right people know, and the word can get out. Similar case to the music (hopefully)

    Oh boy.

Origins' .exe has some leftover strings from Sonic Frontiers.

To clarify: the music, menus, and some parts of the in-game HUD, like the coins overlay and the mission mode HUD, are handled with the Hedgehog Engine 2. There's a lot more leftovers than that floating about Twitter.

A bit excessive of an overall rendering engine (or is it more than that now) to use for such a means, makes me wonder if that's why Windows 10 is the required OS minimum
