People. The prototypes we had before these are not betas. They are alphas.

I know for a fact that the scheme SOA used was something like that:

    - pre-alpha (only used in certain games)
    - alpha (all the development up to beta)
    - beta (all major game modes and features are closed; game is now being heavily tested for bugs by SOA's Q&A)
    - final

This reminds me... did anyone actually managed to contact the magazine or get an answer on it? I know the video has been around for years, but I don't remember well if someone actually tried.

I'd like to play that beta version. I wonder if it's BETA 3?

Thanks for this info. That alone helps to clear up some things.

Now that drx gave us that peice of info, we know that one wouldn't be a beta. If all major game modes and features are closed by the beta stage, that means that HPZ (which is in that prototype) would be removed by the beta stage. Why? Because of that, and also because of space. Remember how we heard that space was part of the reason why HPZ was removed? I think I know why now. From my topic "Opinions about Hill Top Zone" when Tweaker said that Esrael fit all those levels without going over 1MB. Well, he did that because he used the Sonic 1 special stages instead of the Sonic 2 special stages. In his Delta II hacks where he has the Sonic 2 special stages, the ROM is over 1MB. So, with the special stages in Sonic 2, and everything else almost done by the beta stage, there wasn't enough room for more levels.

Indeed. It seems that these protos we just got (Sonic 2-wise) are relatively finished. I figured it'd be something like this, since none of the protos in the Sonic block are extremely different (See: Weirdness in the Wai and Nick Arcade prototypes vs. our 'Beta4-8' ones) so that means we'd really want some Alpha protos if we want to find bizarre stuff that never made it far.

Of course, the question is, how available are the alphas by comparison to these betas? Would it be reasonable to believe that one could get a fairly complete archive of them, or did they do something different which would make it much harder to get them?

I just ask these out of curiousity, since I'm not so much an alpha/beta getter but rather wondering if I could expect to see alphas of the Sonic games within my lifetime. (Idle question, that is)

You know, that's exactly what I was thinking.

I hope S.Snake reads this, and adds support to this official extension as well as the split ROMs, whenever the next Fusion is coming.

By the way, I'm getting the feeling that the versions started being called "betas" when Sonic & Tails' objects were (theorically) completely finished.

I wouldn't get so excited about .SGD, it wasn't used that often. Most unchunked and unweirdified ROMs used simply .BIN

if *.sgd and *.bin are the same thing there's really no reason to add another extension for a file type that's the same thing with a different extension. It's simply repetitive and a waste of time.

Yeah... I mean, we already have .gen, and you can simply assign that to open with Fusion on double click if you're really concerned. No need to go through all the trouble to "officially" recognize it.

It's interesting to know that was an official file extension contemporary with the system, though. Monster World Complete Collection uses .SGD for some of its MD ROMs (one of them is just .MD), and I hadn't been certain if it was just a format they created for that compilation.

    I agree.

I don't like to use .BIN for genesis ROMs when all the other systems ROMs have a certain extension even if they're still straight binary. SMD would have been good if it was "Sega Mega Drive" instead of "Super Magic Drive" but, oh well. I'm not gonna make a big deal out of it if everyone else thinks it's a bad idea though.
