Am I crazy, or are the classic stages in Sonic Generations just not fun?

  1. I wish Generations (console ver.) included at least one Advanced stages.

I haven't played the portable version because I simply never owned a 3DS and heard the console versions were better. It be interesting if they did but I imagine the console versions were simply focusing on mainline games only and the portable version decided to include the advance games as it be pointless to leave them out.

Slice of life visual novel, coming soon...?
The 3ds version has a whopping one handheld stage, being Water Palace from Rush. Nothing from Advance or the Game Gear games.
(There's also Tropical Resort if you feel like being charitable, but I don't)

Adding on to this, the Classic Sonic stages on 3DS are 1:1 copies of the originals when applicable. Mushroom Hill 1 even has the Big Ring rooms still there, though none are worth visiting, since there's only 8 rings instead.

The point where I just gave up and closed the game out originally was when I actually got softlocked on a flipper in Casino Night 1. Glad I was only trying it out through a modded system. If that happened in a title I'd paid $40 for, I'd be pissed.

  5. Yeah, I do appreciate the 3DS version remembered Sonic Rush exists. And they even got Cash Cash to remix Hideki's song. I think the 3DS version had some really intereresting choice for some stages, like Casino Night (yes, I know it's technically in console ver. as a bonus stage) and Mushroom Hill Zone.

It's definitely an interesting game (with a much better stage selection imo, ignoring the complete absence GG/GBA stages), but it's a complete afterthought and it shows unfortunately.

To stay on topic I will say the Classic Sonic stages are actually pretty enjoyable tho, and I tend to replay them as much as the Modern ones when revisiting this game.

The more I think of it, the more I come to conclusion that Generations was a great opportunity to do DLC Packs with stages.

Did the game not sell well? Because I don't understand why we didn't get stages like White Jungle, Pumpkin Hill, Casino Highway, Underground Zone and many, many more :/

Btw. Are there any good and complete mods for Gens, like the Unleashed one?

Meant to quote supersnoopy but it didn't work on mobile and just broke really badly so my reply:

I'd count topical resort since it has the gimmicks exclusive to the ds version in it.

I mean, this is true, but visually it looks like the Wii version. And Colours is always going to a Wii game with a handheld version on the side. It's not really in the same league as handheld exclusives, of which Rush is the only one represented in Generations.

Generations pool of stages across both versions of the game is never not going to be disappointing to me. Whilst the individual levels picked were mostly solid choices, they didn't come together well. The game needed more than just 9 levels in its main version. I could say more, but it would be going off thread and I'm sure that I've shared my thoughts more than once in the last 12 years.

Yeah. The console version had too many city levels, not to mention it had Green Hill and Seaside Hill in the same game. Granted, the latter put a greater emphasis on the sea theme to distinguish itself, but something like Frog Forest would have made for greater variety.

That said, I never understood the complaints about the 3DS version not featuring more handheld levels. Experiencing 3d levels like Radical Highway in sidescroller form was much more interesting than playing old 2d levels with prettier graphics IMO.

I think the issue is that they picked stages based off of popularity polls done in house at SEGA, which is fine but once you notice you have 5 city levels out of your 9 levels you should really start picking from 2nd or 3rd place in the list.

They're okay but the way Sonic plays and the game not having any incentive for exploring or having 50 rings makes them kind of whatever? The physics are all off and it's optimal to abuse that auto spindash button.

I remember joking online at the time that the Generations levels were Green Hill, Poison City Escape, Ancient City Escape, Night City Escape, City Escape, Ocean Green Hill, Burning City Escape, Euro City Escape, and Mecha Green Hill.

I think I played City Escape as Classic Sonic a lot when the game came out, but I'd never return to it now that Mania is a thing.
