Not where I want to be.
Sonic (?): Coming summer of 2055...?
I find the complaints that it wasn't "official" enough kinda funny.

I mean yea, Sonic Adventure: The Movie would've been cool, but I'm not torn up about not getting that.

Given the semi-realistic bent of the first movie, set a few scenes in the Las Vegas strip. It's a bunch of casinos, at night!

Hasn't there been enough Gen 1 pandering by Game Freak itself in the last few years? As much as we complain about "OMG SO MUCH GREEN HILL AND CHEMICAL PLANT AND CLASSIC SONIC EVERYWHERE" Pokemon has been doing the same damn thing for a while.

The film has gained a lot of fan support, is it really ok to want "just" more of the same?

I haven't been following the actual games since they switched to fully 3D graphics, so I have no idea what sort of pandering GameFreak has been doing with Pokemon.

Around 1991, I remember envisioning Sonic's voice as deep and raspy with a bit of a Barry White-esque quality. I've never seen them get the voice anywhere close to my original imagination.

The Sonic movie definitely seemed like a lame ordeal at first glance. I'm surprised it was somewhat fun. Sonic's design ended up being pretty great. I really think it ended up being a lot better than it could have been and I think if done right, the sequel will be much better. It'll be riding a wave of hype and they have time to really polish this thing now. Here's to hoping. I am in love with Tika Sumpter after seeing the film.

I hope not. The model looks worse (still an improvement over the original movie one, but regardless), the on-Earth cultural references are cringe inducing, and Sonic doesn't need a human sidekick in games. I'll be deeply disappointed if it does end up going this way but I do wonder if it will happen given that this is (a) not Japanese and (b) drastically different to Sonic Team's vision. Western-dev'd games aren't impossible but I hope unimportant in the long run.

Did you not watch Pokémon Origins when it was aired? Pretty good adaptation of Gen 1.

Yeah, but damn near every single thing the GLORIOUS NIPPON SONIC TEAM-SAMA has done in the last 20 years has made the Sonic franchise the laughingstock of the entire human race. I'll take literally anything that shuts up the "Sonic was never good" crowd.

I'm not sure this would achieve that goal, but whatever.

Yes, I did watch Pokemon Origins. It was terrible.

EDIT: Pokemon Adventures (AKA Pokemon Special) is the only good adaptation I've seen, and that's only a comic book.

Have you forgotten Sonic X? Japan also screwed up with Sonic when they got the chance to make it right. And it saddens me that it happened...

  11. I wasn't really a big fan of the first Sonic movie, but I never really had a problem with Ben Schwartz as Sonic. I will admit though, that I was disappointed when I found out Junichi Kanemaru wouldn't be reprising his role as Sonic for the Japanese dub of the movie, since he's been voicing the character for over 20 years now. Even the Japanese Sonic fans were pretty disappointed by that move on social media.

...Also I liked Sonic X. Well, the Japanese version, anyway. It's not my ideal Sonic adaptation, but I thought it was a fun watch.

At the time Sonic X aired in my country, I still didn't have full-time network connection.
I only watched in full the portuguese dub of the american version.
Of the japanese version, I only watched SA1&2's adaptations.
At the time, I actually enjoyed Sonic X, since Sonic was finally turned into an anime series.
Years later, I started noticing its fails and disliking their creative liberties (Chris & Pals).
And that Metarex Arc... Even now I wonder how did I get myself to watch that...

I wasn't sure the first movie would achieve that goal, either, "but whatever."

Because Sega of America wanted to hire non-union voice actors, and found them in 4Kids. which folded explosively in 2010.

I echo the sentiment that I really hope that none of the movie stuff makes it into the games. It's fine, but it's not "Sonic", and we don't need another "aesthetic" to throw into the stew of "possible Sonic aesthetics" that Sonic Team keeps pulling from instead of actually just fuckin picking one.

    -

Also I disagree with the Pokemon stuff. all of it. Sword/Shield is fine, and the most fun I've had with the games since OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire. Fuck BBND lmao.

    Jack shit.
From what I remember hearing back in the day was that Sega Japan forced the American VA change.

Evidence to support that was that Shadow and Rush already had voice work done with the old VAs before the switch.

    Have we found out otherwise?

For what it's worth, Sonic X I didn't find that bad - while yes, human sidekick, you'll note a lack of both stuff from it going into games (if anything, it was the other way around) and a lack of real-world cultural references.

I thought Sonic X was pretty good. I like it better than any of the American cartoons (but I didn't watch any of them until I was in college so I don't have that childhood bias that some people here have).

Tails is coming to ask for Sonic's help because Robotnik's turning his friends into robots.

Just go full silly and put the Death Egg in it. Go on.

4Kids' actors are (well, were) union - the "official" reason for the cast change in 04 was to ensure consistency between the games and Sonic X.

I know with the 2010 cast change they were interested in getting Ryan Drummond back but only if he'd quit his union. I don't know if they made some kind of special arrangement with Mike Pollock to keep him on as Eggman though. Union actors often have to adopt pseudonyms when doing non-union work (see Steve Blum doing Big O under the name "David Lucas"), so either he quit his union (doubtful considering he still does union NY work all the time) or they made a special arrangement, either with the union or with Mike himself.

I remember he put Sega on blast a little after Generations came out because of that. I can't blame him either. Trying to make someone leave their union is shitty to do.
