I mean, numerous people judged Sonic’s initial design without seeing the movie. I’ve seen both trailers and numerous clips and what I saw doesn’t make me want to see it. Sorry my opinion offended you. Would love to see a more SEGA-involved Sonic movie, would you consider that a bad thing?

Slice of life visual novel, coming soon...?
As someone that wasn't too happy with them not bringing Roger for the movie, I thought that Ben Schwartz was a pretty damn good Sonic.

There's a difference between judging the design of Sonic and judging the whole movie. I personally judged the Sonic design because it gave me horrific Uncanny Valley vibes, not because I thought that automatically meant the movie would suck.

I'd guess it's because it wasn't official before the film was released. Nobody could guarantee that the first movie was going to be a success critically or commercially, so the dotted line wasn't signed until very recently. Quite often it's decided to make a sequel before a film has even hit cinemas and that only changes if the film was an unexpected bomb. It was kind of a given that the movie would get a sequel after it did so well across the board. They just had to officialise it, get a crew on board and then that was it.

I'm not really looking forward to this. I haven't seen the film yet and I'm not exactly planning on doing so anytime soon. It's really, really not my thing. But having said that, I am glad that this is being made. It knocked a lot of people for six that the film turned out to be not only one of the better video game adaptations out there but one of the best-performing at the box office and a decent film purely on its own merits. People enjoyed it, and I'm all for that. The only thing that I'm bothered about is the fact that they're inevitably going to replace Colleen Villard, Tails' game VA for the past six years and she also voiced him in the post-credits scene of the film. For a tiny cameo with no certainty of a sequel, using her made sense. In an actual sequel though, they're going to use another Hollywood actor for sure. They're bankable. Happens every time.

Although one thing I have to say that I really do like is how Tails is flying super fast in the post-credits scene. Hopefully, that carries through to the actual film and any characters from Sonic's world are portrayed with super speed. Sonic should always continue to be the fastest thing alive by a long shot and speed-based rivalries can be set up with characters like Metal or Shadow, but I've always just really enjoyed seeing all of the characters capable of running at insane speeds. It's cool when it's kind of baseline ability, and makes for interesting action.

The movie looked like absolute horse shit from the first trailer. Sonic's design was a piece of horse shit unto itself, but someone can judge what they think of a product based on the media that they put out. The post-redesign trailer was a vast improvement however. Sonic himself looked really good, and the film looked much better too. Still looked like something that I couldn't stand to watch and based on everything I've seen and heard that continues to be the case... but you know, it was better.

Let people judge the film and form opinions without seeing the whole thing. They don't need to see it in full in order to say whether or not they're interested. It's not like he wrote a review trashing the film because he doesn't want to watch it.

It’s the same reason why I’ve never played Sonic Lost World, Sonic Boom, Sonic Forces, and Pokémon Sword & Shield despite being a huge Sonic and Pokémon fan. Those games all look really really bad to me based on numerous footage I’ve seen and I shouldn’t have to play it to know that it’s not for me. That’s what trailers and gameplay videos are for.

Now, the Sonic movie doesn’t look that bad, I’m just surprised that many people don’t seem to care about SEGA having very little to do with the production of the movie, as well as Roger not voicing Sonic (I don’t even like Roger’s Sonic that much, but he’s definitely earned a movie voice role by now instead of some random guy)

It’s not that I think the movie will suck, I’m just not interested in seeing what is essentially a high-budget fan film, and would love to see a high-budget Sonic film that has a more SEGA flavor to it. Who knows, maybe SEGA might be more involved with the sequel.

While it's true that SEGA gave Paramount free reign (to a certain extent) for the movie's production...
What do you deem as "more SEGA flavor", @Chaos Rush? What were you expecting to find in the movie?
What level of involvement were you expecting from SEGA?

    I’ll explain.

Using Detective Pikachu as an example, the Pokémon Company was very involved with the production of it, and as a result the film fits in with everything established in the Pokémon universe. None of the CG Pokémon stray too far from their original 2D designs, they all look pretty much the same except with fur/scales etc., and as a result they’re immediately recognizable as the Pokémon we’ve come to know and love from what we’ve seen of them in various media. The world depicted in the movie itself doesn’t contradict anything from the Pokémon games/anime, it abides by what has already been established.

Meanwhile with the Sonic movie the initial design looks absolutely nothing like Sonic. His redesign is much better but still a very different design from the official SEGA design, and even Naoto Oshima complained on Twitter that the double-eyes thing reminded him of this counterfeit “Sonic” toy he once saw in Taiwan. And then the world and characters depicted in the movie is far, far different from the world that’s been established for Sonic by SEGA. This “Sonic” is raised by an owl, generates electricity, sounds nothing like Sonic has sounded since 2010, Robotnik has hair, and then while Jim Carrey is great he looks nothing like Robotnik and even his final look that’s meant to look like Robotnik much closer still doesn’t look anything like Robotnik. I’m sure as a stand-alone film it’s fine, but it just feels like fan-fiction with how unfaithful it is to SEGA’s franchise.

For years now, SEGA seems to care little about the world, lore and inhabitants of the Sonic games.
Whatever setting they arrange for a new game, they "fit" the characters in it, regardless of prior characterization.
The Sonic Movie ain't that different. It has Sonic and "Eggman", so to them it may be enough to make it work.
SEGA seems to not care "much" that it's not faithful to the games, as long as it sells Sonic to a wider audience.
Which actually did, giving more power to SEGA. And they'll surely capitalize on that, no doubt about it.
So, yeah, if you wanted something more like Detective Pikachu, you have the right to stay away from the movies.

I honestly agree with this. I know some might regard it as petty because clearly it's meant to be its own thing and not analogous to the games, but I just have to question why so many changes are made that feel unnecessary. Translating a game series to film is never going to be a 1:1 thing, especially when the film is intended to be a relatively fresh start and new entry point for a franchise that's been running for close to 30 years. Totally fine with that. I just wish it was more familiar, truer to the source material and only changed to actually serve a purpose. Taking Sonic's original movie design as an example, just why was that ever a thing? And his later redesign was basically his game design rejigged to work in a live-action setting without looking totally out of place, although with a couple of changes that strike me as totally arbitrary. The inclusion of echidnas and Pachacamac is strange too. It just flies in the face of the lore established in the games so much. Why was it done? Why couldn't it have just been the lizard/reptilian characters that were originally used?

It's a really strange case where the end product is apparently really good, but I don't understand the reasoning behind so many of the decisions it made. I'm always going to feel a little uncomfortable with these sorts of changes, whether it's Sonic or anything else.

What the fuck are you talking about? I addressed one specific point where he seemed to be judging the design, which we could fully see, and judging the movie, which a trailer only ever gives parts of. He's perfectly welcome to not want to see it, why should I care? Don't you go putting words into my mouth.

Well, I thought it was a really fun movie despite having extremely low expectations initially when the first trailer was released with the ugly Sonic design. Its great to hear that it is getting a sequel and I look forward to it!

I liked the first two minutes of the first film. Nearly everything after that was pretty meh for me. The more they bring in Sonic's world, the better. If it's still Earth, I probably won't be interested enough to see it on my own. I could be bullied into it by my brother and my nephew, though.

Woah, chill out. I was replying to a thread of quotes, not just yours. Also not sure which words you think I put in your mouth here? His point about people judging design despite not seeing the entire film was nonsensical I agree. But he was being called out for having an opinion despite not having seen the movie, even though he presented that caveat upfront. I was just stepping in to say he can judge based on what he knows.

I would just like something that a few steps closer to the games instead of "cartoon character ends up in the real world," but hopefully they have that in mind already.

I'm just excited. I wanna see what they can do now that they don't have origin-story-baggage weighing them down. I used the fact that the release day for the first one was Valentine's to drag my partner along for moral support, but they didn't enjoy the first one and I did so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'll just go see it on my own, or maybe with my housemate.

Never wanted the first one, disappointed they're doing a second but not surprised given the returns on it. So long as it doesn't bleed into games I can deal.

"it's weird and a bit disrespectful that they didn't have Mike Pollock play live-action Eggman despite him playing Eggman since 2004."

I mean come on, we're complaining about Ben Schwartz now? Smith's Sonic voice doesn't suit Sonic's normal game character, and you think he should play the slightly different, clearly younger personality in the movie? Maybe he has a wider vocal range than I'm aware of and maybe he could fit the character under Fowler's direction, but saying he 'deserves' the role because of legacy status and nothing else is ridiculous. Smith was brought in to replace Jason Griffith for no apparent reason, who in turn was brought in to replace Ryan Drummond for no apparent reason. I doubt Schwartz is going to replace Smith in the games, so for now, Smith is just lucky he's lasting this long.

Heck, Jaleel White is more suitable for the film role than Roger Craig Smith is.

I was actually disappointed that they brought in Tails' voice, because I really don't like any of the post-2010 or post-Boom voices barring Knuckles, and he better be played by The Rock if he shows up in a movie.

Hoping for the return of Jim Carrey. He's pretty famous for not doing sequels, after having a bad experience on Ace Ventura 2. That's what I've heard, anyway, so take that at face value.

I think he's actually changed a bit recently. He did Dumb and Dumber To in 2014, and he's said in numerous interviews he'd be down for a Sonic sequel.
