Sonic Mania (Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC...Netflix?)

Discussion in 'General Sonic Discussion' started by TimmiT, Jul 23, 2016.

  1. Some of the fangames and fanhacks are quite good, so "fangame" does not seem so disparaging to me. However, being a "fangame" suggest there being no sanction or financial support from Sega.
This also looks more polished than say, Megamix, which leads me into something I have always said on other boards and social media sites, being that, talented fangame devs could put out some true quality-refined titles, with official support and a budget.

Sonic Mania made me stop lurking and finally join up! I hope my time here is long but if all I get to do is thank everyone for making my childhood dream of a faithful 2D Sonic sequel come true then I will be happy.

So here it goes... My name is Lewis and I have been a forum lurker for a very long time.

Being born in 1983 I had the privilege of growing up with the Mega Drive and playing Sonic from the very beginning
I remember having an Action Replay cart and finding the garbled Hidden Palace zone in Sonic 2 and I imagined what it was like. I remember my Dad playing a cruel prank on me when Sonic 3 came out by wrapping up my Sonic 2 game with a 3 on a post it note on the front. I was not impressed!

I have been a follower of all the Sonic retro mods/hacks and recreations over the years and have been eagerly following Sonic 2 HD.

My love for the Sonic games has not faded over the years and any opportunity to relive the classic games on a port I would take. I remember being disappointed with Sega's attempts at porting to mobile platforms until Christian Whitehead got his hands on them.

Sonic influenced my life both artistically and musically shaping who I am to this day. My love of complex electronic music and pursuing a career as an artist came from playing Sonic.

This is simply amazing. I want to thank all of you here in this forum for your contribution. You may think you haven't done anything but by simply being here and keeping this community going you created an environment which allowed so much raw passion and talent to reach what many would have said was impossible.

The fact that even now you are all debating the pros and cons is a testament to this environment you have crafted throughout the years. The problem we all face now is how different this new 2d adventure may be to what we individually envisioned. It's like reading a book and then seeing the film adaptation. It will never be perfect but my God this is close. I cannot wait to buy this game and see what a team of true hardcore fans with years of practice can do that Sega has repeatedly fallen short of achieving.

Thank you to everyone involved and thank you Sonic Retro!

I've just looked at 8 mins of game play and I keep finding references! I love that on the side of the tube trains running in the background of Studiopolis it says 'Cope' and 'CPU' just like in Spring Yard Zone!

Interview with Taxman about Mania: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rDCmCd8BVo&t=5m30s

Main new thing said in it is that the game will have a story that explains why Sonic is going back to old zones. They are treating the old zones as if they are living places that have changed over time.

As someone who bought Sonic CD (2011) for Xbox 360, PS3, Android and PC plus Sonic 1 & 2 for Android you betcha I will buy this at least for the PS4 and PC!

I'm still waiting for Sonic 1 and 2 to be released on Steam though...

I've lost respect for Pulse0. He's definitely taking this opportunity to discredit Taxman & Stealth's work in order to make himself look better. You literally just came around with a fan game like last year. People hardly even know you yet. Take a chill pill.

He acknowledged two other things: insta-shield's removal is controversial, but they want another way to gain speed rather than maintain momentum, and Sonic 1 is the main art style they're aiming for, but the other games will contribute some their design elements. I had a feeling, since Studiopolis feels very Spring Yard.

Wow! To see Sonic Mania being in the making really shows how carefully an original successor to the classics has to be treated. No wonder they got Sir Whitehead involved (but man, what a relief :P). Big thumbs up for drop dash, I can definitely see that coming in handy.

Welp, as for the reimagined Zones I'd love to see something a little bit more unexpected, say for example Sonic 3's Chrome Gadget or CD's scrapped Desert Dazzle.

For the record, fan games totally do not fall under fair use, and yes, spider man on deviant art can be trademark violation. They often are not targets for litigation because of the logistical nightmare that would be trying to quell all fan creation, which should be obvious.

"Tax and Stealth didn't write the books, they learned from Sega just like all of us" is beyond ridiculous lol. I've been posting on these boards for [strike]18[/strike] 19 years now, recognize where that info used to make your community engine came from.

Holy fuck I've been posting on these boards for 19 years

I think it has something to do with Nintendo (I could be wrong). I can't remember where I saw that article which explained why it's only for the mobile port. And yes you're not alone waiting for that to be release on Steam like everyone else want -.-

I'm glad that there's going to be an in-game explanation for Sonic revisiting old Zones, respecting the established lore of Sonic 1/2/3 all being set on different islands (and CD on Little Planet). Maybe it will be like Sonic Rush, where each character plays through levels in a different order? Knuckles could start on an Angel Island based Zone. I also love the idea that we'll be seeing new events within those old levels. It was dramatic when Angel Island Zone was set aflame in Sonic 3, it would be even more interesting to see unexpected events like this happening in Zones we've been familiar with for decades. A bit like in Pokemon Gold and Silver, where you could revisit the world of the first game and see what's changed in the intervening years.

I don't miss the insta-shield at all, it was too esoteric and limited. It felt like a whole lot of nothing compared to Knuckles' glide and Tails' flight. Drop dash looks like a very useful and immediately understandable addition. I just hope that it's balanced well, so speed runs don't become non-stop drop dash spam.

I dunno about Chemical Plant. They already did that for Generations, and the Team probably knows that people want other stages (although GHZ is pretty much mandatory, I'm assuming.)

The only ones from Generations I'd think have a chance of showing up are Casino Night, Mushroom Hill (since they were both only on the 3DS version) and Stardust Speedway (because it was only used as a boss stage.) Aside from that, Spring Yard, Metropolis, Lava Reef and Quartz Quadrant might be candidates since they'd benefit from all of their tiny details getting the 32-bit treatment.

I'm sincerely happy for everyone involved with the game. It's amazing to see how far they came.

I'm making sure I buy the game for every platform I can play the game on. Which at the moment is Xbox One, and PC (Steam?). If it comes to Android, I'll buy it there too. I honestly just want to support this game the best I can. I absolutely love the work and love put into it.

19 years? It's like you been here since the beginning of time ya scruffy old man X 3 That was a terrible joke

You mean the chances of the 3Ds stages from Generation are pretty slim...
But the others maybe and why not the scrap stages, it would be awesome to see them get the 32-bit treatment. Stealth and Taxman should merge Dust Hill zone and Desert Dazzle zone as one, I can image it already XD

I'm more interested in the new levels, dunno about what the rest of you think but I was actually disapointed with Gree Hill appearance and remastered theme :V

For me that depends on how much they'll be changing the original zones. I could see Green Hill being so similar to the original because it's the first zone, but it would be cool if the rest of the zones have bigger changes.

If we see Angel Island Zone, maybe we'll see what happened to the zone after the fire was put out. :v:

Trying to think of what other potential there is. Maybe the ruined remains of Marble Garden Zone? An abandoned, Death Egg-less Launch Base?

Oh but I wasn't talking about the 'lack' of changes but the nature of the ones that were made!

For example, the BG was redrawn to look less blocky, but the FG stayed the same so the consistency between the artstyle was broken. See for example Palmtree Panic and Colision chaos BG, both could be used on Green Hill with just a palette change, but fitting another drawing style nah.

The cave section was interesting but the very big ceiling with the sky on the other end with the little mountains on the horizon make it look like an enormous hollow and not something like Mystic Cave, specially because there's grass and palmtrees growing inside.

So from a designer's perspective it really looks amateurish :V

They went really spot on on Studiopolis, though! The colors and the interaction between art pieces from every dark corner of the Sonic Univers created something really unique.

Did not think of that really but I see your point. They have until 2017 spring which is enough time to change up Green Hill zone and give it a better touch up. We did see a demo of it and it can change drastically in the final product like how the other games were in the past. For example, Green Hill zone had a different background and other various assets during the development and when the final version came out, majority of it change.
