- Take Sonic model with animations - Put it in pre-existing Unreal Engine 4 demo - Turn movement speed and jump height variables up by a lot - ??? - Profit Not really sure why this is getting so much attention when others have already done a much better job putting Sonic mechanics in UDK: http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=19492
basically "oh look the 2006 trailer is playable now" When UE4 natively supports arbitrary gravity in the next update, THEN we can talk about cool Sonic UE4 stuff. Trust me...
I sure hope this “*character* in Unreal Engine 4” thing isn't a new trend. It was bad enough with the Mario one that got posted pretty much everywhere (despite it not even being that great, and not really fitting at all). Besides, with SonicGDK (which TimmiT already posted the topic link for) we already have some pretty decent UDK stuff, Sonic Souls being one example.
In contrast, this one has absolutely no point whatsoever except being as bad as the typical 3D sonic fan game. In other words, This.
I like how Sonic takes up fully one-fifth of the screen. This seems like a really great demo for people who thought the Game Gear games had too much visibility.
Someone in the HDK group did this for fun. It's really as simple as grabbing the map and dropping your character into it though. With the basic third person character component already set up for you in Blueprints you just need to toss in a model and link up their animations and you're gold. Really not that impressive. :v: At least Sonic's brawl model looks pretty good from the typical Sonic game perspective though but I can't make out why he looks so fucking pissed.
Didn't really mean to say that the work done here is bad, like you said it's clearly made for fun. I'm more surprised by how much attention it's getting.
I don't think it's the guys who are making HDK. If it was, I'm sure they would have posted it on their own channel. HDK may be work in progress, but it looks nothing like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtcX5dxsSKI
People are impressed by simple things since game development is mostly a foreign thing. I bet you could drop in Link or Banjo and get the same sort of result. This particular video was linked by a few articles though. EDIT: I guess I should clarify the vid in the OP isn't the HDK's vid. Ricardo posted that one for fun his own channel. I don't think we currently have an official channel for HDK since it isn't fit for show. Ricardo was kinda mad that he did his first and the other guy got all the views though. EDIT: EDIT: Christ I can't spell or spit out my words today.
Clearly It's meant to be a homage to this familiar face + - Come on, I can't be the only one who thought of this
Why isn't this in fangaming discussion? I'll wait until they make in-between 'stop' and 'run' speeds/animation before this will be any good
For those wondering why Sonic's mouth is like that, it's because you can't pose Brawl Sonic's mouth. He has a bunch of separate face models that just go invisible for certain animations. (I'm sure there's some technical term for it, but I don't know.) It's like this for most of the characters. I know this because I screwed around with Brawl mods a few years ago. :v: I have no idea why that's the face this guy used though. I mean, I guess this video is kind of interesting, right? The Brawl model and animations do look pretty good in the third person. The running and wait animations are pretty much based on Sonic CD. I think it'd be cool to see someone use the Smash 4 model and animations for something.
Of course It'll get all the views if it looks remotely flashy. Since when did videos get popular for the gameplay?
Damn, that OP video gets over half a million views for that? I'm going about my videos all wrong! It's not even gameplay, it's just Sonic jumping around with pretty graphics.
Yeah, you never really stop noticing that. What's really fun is reading some of the comments. I saw one on Reddit that was like, "This is the best Sonic game in 20 years!" Near the top of the thread, too.
