Here's a really shitty GIF I made using the first Youtube to GIF converter I could find on the internet (that limits to 5 seconds), because I don't have a MP4 to GIF converter available:

However, I do have a converter for WebMs. Here is a MUCH better WebM that also has sound and has the entire time the ball's on the screen. http://overlord.digibase.ca/sonic1_ball_nickarcadepilot.webm

The ball must roll faster if Sonic pushes it... else how do we explain this shot:

Looks like its bouncing or something lol

This screen gave me a pretty cool idea just now. Imagin the way to beat the first boss would be to jump on Robotnik's giant swinging balls than you had to jump off to be able to hit him.

    Thanks.

The way I'm seeing it the ball is coming from the right and has taken off from the edge.

Valleybell explained the reason behind this a few weeks back and even posted a ROM with the older sound driver ported in that causes the same drum pitch. I believe it's in this very thread...

Looks Bugged ! Sonic ran away with one of Robotnik's detached boss Balls.
( could it be that Sonic came with the ball from the left and the ball rolled threw the air instead of down the slope ? Someday that Rom may leak and we'll find out for sure.

This excited me that a beta of sonic 1 was on this show. Gives hope a cart is still out there.

Me too. I want to believe. The video description implies the uploader got it from the show's creator, Karim Miteff. I wonder if he has any knowledge of what happened to everything after the show ended. Here's hoping Nick didn't just dump everything.

I contacted Mr Miteff, fingers crossed.

Well, we already got that early Sonic 2 build that was very likely from Nick Arcade itself (due to the holographic label). That would mean our chances are at least better than nothing.

Holy fuck. Such a weird episode of Nick Arcade, and with some very interesting Sonic 1 proto footage. Wish we had this in high-bitrate interlaced form, I'd clean it up a bit. Would really like to see it in 60fps.

Wonder if this is potentially the same build seen in Wayne's World.

My thinking is there are three prototype builds shown to the public:

    http://info.sonicretro.org/images/2/2e/GHZ-DarkBG.jpg
The Tokyo Toy Show one, which is barely more than a tech demo.

    http://info.sonicretro.org/images/d/d0/GHZ-loop.jpg
The unplayable build from Winter CES 1991, with the debug in the bottom right, darker GHZ water, etc.

    http://info.sonicretro.org/File:GHZ_map2.png

    http://info.sonicretro.org/File:SYZ-Sparkling6.jpg
    http://info.sonicretro.org/File:LZ-NewBG2.jpg
    http://info.sonicretro.org/File:SBZ-Pic5.jpg
And this one, which I'm guessing the vast majority of prototype screenshots come from.

People like to think there are 3592432432049 builds because the game was always getting updated during development, but I don't imagine any more than three were released to the gaming press. Same for Sonic 2 - though there we have 2 out of 3 (Nick Arcade, Simon Wai, missing this one, the rest were for internal use).

How did Drx track down the Sonic 2 Nick Arcade Cart? Are those channels still available to investigate this? It's too tantalizing to believe that it's been lost to time. I don't want to believe that :ohdear:

I agree, Squirrel. Woul be nice to have a time machine to recover these builds (especially the TTS build which I fear is lost).

So the bridge before the ball has no water in both that footage and release, which I find curious. The rest of the bridges with Choppers in all acts have water under them.

Given that there is space on the level map, could the ball have been meant to be pushed on to bridges, destroy them and open up new areas?

Doubtful. I THINK the waterfalls that are placed at those locations are objects. The ball is most likely an extensive physics test.
